Depends if your going to build it yourself I'd say given the right conditions, anywhere from 600-10,000$. I'd say start at places like Tom's Hardware for a good outline or example builds. Then start spec'ing systems on sties like newegg.com and tigerdirect.com.

EDIT: Just keep in mind that this system will replace your game console AND your work desktop's functions. So bearing that in mind a gaming PC is a very smart move, since looking at it like that your actually saving money in the long haul.

Surely you meant $1000. Not even I could go all out and spend $10k on a PC, lol. I'd have to get Sennheiser's $1500 headphones, and a studio grade monitor to get close to that.
Well he never said that he wasn't and audiofile lol. However if you wanted all high end parts, custom case and paint job. With 3 circuit water cooling and many large monitors you could get close to 10k. Though I do know that once you spend more then 1000-1200$ on a system you've hit the point of extremely diminishing returns in performance.

Pretty much. After $1000, it's all just for fun. I'm building one currently, and it's at ~$1900. Waiting on those new GPUs... then I'll swap out the 2500k for Ivy Bridge whenever it comes out. This shit is a hobby for me, so yeah, it's like a drug, lol. Plus I haven't upgraded my shit in like 5 years, so I'm just sitting here on this once godlike system, now reduced to nothing more than a snail.
Yea I know that feeling, I did my massive upgrade back last year. Trashed my C2D and 8800GTS for a Shiny new Core i7 and a GTX 480. But the system I had before that C2D was a 1999 vintage Pentium II.

Maximum PC dream machine, can't remember what the last one cost when they put it out, but it costs about that much.
