Not a tip, more a question: Why would I go to your gaming site instead of one of the several I already visit? Between IGN, Giantbomb, and the Escapist, I've got all of the gaming information I need. Each of the three have their strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and focuses, and between all three I don't feel I need any other gaming news.

I'm not telling you this out of smartassery. If you want to attempt it, do it. I'm just saying, if you want to do this, give people a reason to visit your site instead of just doing what other sites already do and better.
What he said. Unless you have a clear vision of what you want your site to be about, and you can do something unique that no other site does, it might be difficult for you to keep traffic on your site up.

I can come here from the computer in my job because of the vague name, will your site be accessible from job computers? do you play anything besides shooters? will u continuously obsess over Skyrim and Mass Effect? Is it a forum, a news site, a blog?

you're answers will dictate my becoming a regular in your site.

Got to agree with the above commenters. Ill go to a site which has things I enjoy on it. Gaming related things in this case, since its a gaming site. So what content would that be? Whats the payoff for me here?

Will it have hookers and Blackjack?

If no, then why would I visit any other gaming site than the fabulous escapist?

Be a little more specific, is it an all around game site like IGN or a more specific one that only focuses on one area.

You would have to tell us what your site would be focusing on; such as AAA game reviews, indie reviews, strategies for game etc.

It might be an idea to look for a job with an established site, such as The Escapist, Destructoid, IGN or whatever you like the most. Once you've built up a reputation and have experience, deciding whether you actually want to make your own site or not (and the site's focus) should be much easier and more informed.

If you're going to start a site up, be prepared to invest in it. The internet is over saturated with start-ups who aren't willing to pay their writers.

I love it when a thread gets /threaded in the first response.

Find a gap in the market and fill it, son. Also, this:

I'd love to write for such a site, if it helps me pay my bills.

Whoa, whoa. We have hookers and blackjack!?

OP: Do what you want. It can be fun to make a website even if traffic is low. I just started a PC gaming/hardware/reviews/guides blog with under 300 hits in about 2 weeks, but whatever. I like it and there's often opportunity for me to link people to it. Like now, perhaps.

What if I said it was I was thinking of making a video game design blog where I share my (and other people's) tips?

Would that be worth doing?

BUMP

I started a video game design blog instead to make it a little more original. A little more. Feedback?

Please ignore the code thing at the top - that is temporary and is needed to claim my blog and get it into Technorati.
