Don't bother asking the Escapist.

Most of them will say it's "Addicting" and go then go play FF7 for 17 hours before drinking 43 cans of Mountain Dew.

My opinion? It's fun and NOT addicting, anyone who says so is a weak minded twat.

First of all dont listen to anything these guys have said. Yes you will get addicted but it is ridiculous to even compare a video game to drugs or drug addiction.

Also if you aren't an idiot about your time you won't become fat and it will not effect your social life.

If you want to try it then try it. But remember it is expensive and after awhile it'll stop being fun and start being effort.

Whatever you do ignore the over dramatization of it's "side effects".
I have had lots of minor addictions, tobacco, caffeine, things like this, WoW, CoD4, runescape bleh bleh.

And I'll group the mental aspect of the physical drugs with addictive games. They won't cause you to fall asleep at 3PM during withdrawal, nor will it drag you over to the PC, but that mental feeling, it's totally there and it feels like it's coming from the same place.

played it since it came out 6 or 7 seven years ago, however I only have about 340 days played +/-60 on other chars. Its not addictive but it can become really fun when you are raiding with people you enjoy talking to. However be prepared that wow is not a game(maybe the levelling part is) but the raiding and guild part is a hobby. The reason I say this is because wow operates the exact same way, you meet people on specific times of the week that you don't talk to in your normal day and then you go raid bosses with them gaining new items so you can advance.

Now the game itself have improved a lot, so it should be easy for nub like you to play it. Now if I were to say anything bad about and this might just be the elitist talking but the game is has been extremely dumbed down, where welfare epics are being handed out constantly making all your real efforts invalid since in one month everyone will get the item for free that you worked really hard getting(which is the reason I quit the game).

Honestly man, just give it a shot. I always wanted to try it and eventually I did and got bored once I hit 85. As long as you keep in control of your life you have nothing to lose and you'll never have to wonder again.

I'm on the way out it seems. Nevertheless, WoW is by far the most polished MMO I've played, and Blizzard is still doing an exceptional job with it.

Still, if you decide to give it a go, look at how you play the game objectively. Would you enjoy the game if there was NO gear involved at all? Make sure you're playing a game and not a Skinner Box.

Dear Everyone,

I was actually enjoying my trial last night. The set pieces are pretty fantastic looking and was the void I needed to have filled. However, the gameplay is.boring.as.hell. It really is just a click marathon.

Does that change once you level up or should I try a new class? (current class = Night Elf Warrior)

You guys are ridiculous.

I suggest trying it, if you have any self control at all you stop when you want or need to.
And WoW isn't actually a bad game, it is quite balanced and fun.

The only thing that changes is you get more things and/or different things to click on. Also, the game doesn't start until max level. The last time I went from level one to level max was in Wrath. It took me almost two months of playing a couple of hours every day to do this. After that I decided taking almost two months to start anything in a video game is unacceptable and I stopped playing.

Yeah, I've been thinking of trying it too. I've had this 14-day free trial CD in my possession for years, but never bothered to use it.

i found it a wonderful time filler. if you lead a busy life, i strongly suggest you do not play, but if you have the time, WoW is a fantastic game.

the social aspect (with friends) is pretty awesome, and i had a lot of fun while i played.

i offer one piece of advice, be a mouse turner, and a keyboard user for the action bar. DO NOT BE A CLICKER! otherwise, have fun ^-^

edit: yeah the gameplay does get better, but that does come with higher levels. i suggest playing up to around level 20 to get a feel of your favourite class (took me 4 attempts before i settled, undead warlock). i found a huge improvement at endgame content, and endgame PVP. also doing dungeons etc with your friends and the such is pretty damn fun.

But you still have their respect. Hours of sitting down and pretending to be an elf is going to change that quite rapidly.

The fuck is wrong with you people, do none of you have any self control? All this nonsensne about starting and then not being to stop is such bullshit. Try it out, if you like it, keep playing, if you don't, no harm done, it was a free trial.

It gets more interesting once you level up a bit.

You won't get an even remotely decent feel of a class's overall spell synergy until you hit around lvl 50ish, where you have more than a few buttons to push and you have to start chaining properly.

The above statement of the game not starting until the level cap is true though - 1 to 85 is basically a long tutorial.

When I played wow, I played it on a regular basis and had to take a few weeks "breaks" once in a while.
I think that speaks volumes of the game.

I spent about 3 or 4 months leveling up my Blood Elf Pally to 85 and the entire time I was daydreaming about how awesome being a maxed out level would be while enduring the same repetative quests one after the other. I mean really, a developer couldn't be sadistic/moronic enough to include even MORE grinding after you reached the maximum level right? In the end, after I got to 85, I realized that I was going to have to grind some more in order to be viable in PVP. You starting with greens and blues while facing off against people with much better PVP equipment than your fresh scrub ass (ie, you'll get raped a lot; no don't kid yourself into thinking that's fun). Oh, and because everyone realized that pub Horde > pub Alliance, the Horde has many more players in the queue for battlegrounds and as a result has 40 minute (no, I'm actually not exagurating) wait times because the Alliance doesn't want to queue.

Fuck.

That.
