Third Games in the Series That Were Good

Really, I think it depends on if we're only counting actual trilogies, like yahtzee did. I can't think of many pure trilogies that I liked the third installment off, but I was very partial to Devil May Cry 3.

Number 3's that were bad:
Monkey Island 3

Wait, wait! What? You didn't like Curse of Monkey Island?
Might I ask why you don't like it?

Well, this is my personal opinion more than anything, but I thought it was an ok adventure game but a poor Monkey Island game. I was a huge fan of the first two, but the third one was quite disappointing - I didn't like a lot of the character design decisions, the switch to voice acting meant the music had to become subdued background noise (a far cry from the funky and atmospheric midi music in Monkey 2), and I didn't like the over-simplified "coin" mechanic. A lot of the best set-pieces were stolen wholesale from Monkey 1 and 2. Basically, the whole game felt like it was aimed towards new players rather than fans of the series.

The singing bit was pretty good though.

Monster Hunter Tri? Althought technically that was the fourth game but I assume the game before Tri was also good!

Actually its more or less the 6th game in the series not counting Frontier.

However it is the third game thats not an updated rerelease, so its all good.

So many people here just list games they thought where good with a three on it rather than third games that are more than just an expansion. A good third game is something that adds more rather than just building off the second (or first if the sequal sucked). Super Metroid is a prime example (no pun intended), while I didn't play the second, the differences between this and the first are like night and day, and not just becasue of the graphics.

Out of the top of my head: Fallout 3, Resistance 3, God of War 3, Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger, Close Combat 3: The Russian Front, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Killzone 3, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Mechwarrior 3, SWAT 3, Sonic 3, Rome: Total War, and a hell of a lot of others.
