I love Videogames and currently I am playing Gears of War 2, Hitman Blood Money, and Grand Theft Auto 4. I noticed a common factor: All of these games are 3rd Person! 3rd Person games are alot different compared to First Person games. I find myself much less immersed in a 3rd Person Shooter/Game, than in a First Person because I can visibly see that it is not me fighting baddies. So I enjoy First Person games more. What is your opnion on the matter?

Uh I wouldn't play Mario in 3rd person, so for me the obvious choice is: depends on the game.

E: forgot to say that I would also never play CS:S or COD in 3rd person.

First person, definitely. Much easier to see.
The difference between 1st and 3rd person view has no effect on my immersion.

I'm assuming we're only talking about games involving shooting.

This. I don't feel like I'm part of the game in third person, and with enough atmosphere, I feel like I actually am the person I'm playing as.

It is impossible to recreate human sight (since it's not a flat screen), which often makes it less realistic when in first person.

Third person is great in the way you can see your character and what he does.

I would vote third person.

It depends on the game. I sometimes switch to third person on oblivion as it can be quite useful sometimes. Mass effect worked well in third person. I wouldn't dream of playing cod4 in third peson though. That would be like suicide

Third person view I enjoy more because it also allows for more gameplay options as well. I like the feel of third person game better as well.

As I, most boringly, say when ever something like this comes up: It depends on the game.

Honestly, I love Half Life 2. First person works SO well for that game. I recently bought Star Wars Battlefront 2 for the PC however... which for SOME reason starts in first person mode (before you go to the options and change it to third) and I hated every single minute of it. It just WORKS for some games.

I enjoy FPS's so much because of the level of immersion I get out of it.

With Tribes and Halo 2 and 3 actually giving you feet, it actually makes it even more immersive to the point where if I fall off a 30ft snow covered ledge, I get butterflies in my stomach as I stare down and hope I dont break my visible ankles...

Usually I prefer TPS, but it depends on the game. I've never gotten into FPS games, with a few exceptions. I like third person more. With that, my favourite TPS's are Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War 2.

First person work incredibly well for games that require quick shots and accurate fire

however from what I've noticed third person games are third person because they want to show you the player models and they specific actions that they do.

such as in blood money choking someone with wire or in splinter cell where stealth and Sam Fisher are the main focus. if you notice a lot of third person games have much better character animation, which is fairly obvious because you are looking at your character all the time.

it's about the game gears of war uses the environment and cover as it's central theme so being able to see around cover is important to the game.

being able to look around you in hitman and splinter cell is important because not being seen is key to the gameplay.

grand theft auto imo is mostly just so they can show off their modeling ability.

one of my favorite games, GRAW and GRAW 2 had the option to do first or third and I always chose third because I loved to watch how my guy slide when I hit the crouch and how he would move in general. the fluidness of the model and the professionalism that it displayed always got me.

It all depends on the game. Even though Mass Effect, Ghostbusters:The Video Game and Fable 2 were all 3rd person, I was completely immersed in them just as I was for 1st person games such as Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare, Half Life 2, and BioShock.

Third Person shooters are somewhat more realistic, since they actually give you a better sense of awareness, similar to real life. In real life, you'd know there was a rock to your left, because of peripheral vision. In FPS life, you wouldn't because your gun and face are glued to one side.

Playing Gears makes me dizzy if I've been FPS-ing a lot.

First person is usually best, apart fom a few exceptions:

Your character is a smokin hot lady

You're playing Red Faction : Geurilla (TP view gives a great panoramic look at your destructive activities)

Your are using a sticky cover mechanic

You like looking at armour

For an F/TPS or an RPG, first person with an option to switch to third. First is more immersive, better in combat situations and easier when wwandering while thirdperson allows a more complete view, makes other people and traps easier to spot and just allows a more complete picture of your surroundings.
