Third Person or First Person?

I like both depending on what I'm doing. Third person's good for platformers and first person's great for shooters. I like being able to toggle between the two but haven't actually run into any games where that's a viable option. Morrowind and Oblivion have quite poor animations so it throws off the immersion when I watch a character wobble about.

It is impossible to recreate human sight (since it's not a flat screen), which often makes it less realistic when in first person.
are you aware that there are monitors that allow for preheripal vision (curved monitors and 360 degree projectors), right?

and on that note its impossible with current hardware to recate outright realism because we dont have the tech for real time photon mapping, fully dynamic textures and environments and entirly realistic physics, so honestly i think your (cant recate the human vision) is kinda moot in that respect.

but finally, i vote first because the only way to kill immersion faster than bugs that make the game unplayable is by using a third person perspective. take bioshock and half life for example, if either of those games were third person shooters the immersion would be completly non-existent. with first person your seeing things through the players eyes, and in that regard putting yourself in their place.

fps for me (third erson is less real.. fps can be tougher and i always take the hard way)
*edit* but it depends on gametypes

I prefer third person, unless the game let's you switch between the two and the third person shooting is sloppy (like in every Hitman game it's better to shoot in FPV.) But for walking, driving, climbing ladders and that kind of thing I always want third person.

sorry for double posting but ive got another point and a text limit.

anyway, about the situational awareness (in respect to real life). close your eyes and walk into a room. now once your in the middle of it open your eyes, but DONT look around, only in front of you. not take a step back, to the right and left and every which way but forward. if its a room you dont know your probably going to trip over things.

fps's work more realisticly in that way because like in real life you have to know whats behind you and around you. while prepherial vision is there the fact is the brain ONLY concentrates on what your concentrating on, all other objects are blurred out because they arent what the brain needs to concentrate on. during a heated firefight some things MIGHT be in your prepherial vision but its not what your concentrating on so your likely going to be unaware that its there unless you noticed it earlier.

nothing wrong with tps's though, but imo they are more unrealistic in a way and less immersive.

I've always prefered third person over first person. But I'm good with both so either of them don't bother me.

Third-person, because I suck at first-person games. Plus, it's not really that much more 'realistic', it's like a very lifelike doll, could pass for real at a glance, but there's something not quite right. I dunno, I just find it kind of unnerving.

I prefer third person, but there needs to be the option of zooming in for aiming.

In almost all genres I can currently think of I prefer a third person point of view. Even when I think of Heretic 1 (first person) versus Heretic 2 (third person) I much preferred Heretic 2. Also for RPGs I prefer an isometric point of view (a la Fallout, Planescape, Baldur's Gate, Aranum, ...). The only genre where I absolutely prefer a first person point of view is with shooters. Playing a fast-paced multi-player Quake death-match as a third person shooter seems like a nightmare to me.

I like third better because you can see behind yourself which is pretty useful...

I like both and never really thought about it before.

I usually prefer 3rd person as it allows me to see what's around me more easily.

1st person always seems a little too closed off, like your wearing blinkers or something.

First person, definitely. Much easier to see.
The difference between 1st and 3rd person view has no effect on my immersion.

Uh I wouldn't play Mario in 3rd person, so for me the obvious choice is: depends on the game.

E: forgot to say that I would also never play CS:S or COD in 3rd person.
I'm assuming we're only talking about games involving shooting.
Ah well then I was a bit quick to read: In any case I stick to what I said, who would play GTA VC/SA/4 in first person? On the other hand I think gears of war's 3rd person doesn't work at all. BF Heroes is however another example where it works.

I couldn't imagine Warsow (if any of you have heard of it) or quake or UT or anything like it 3rd person so it all goes back to-> depends on the game.

tbh im not picky i like playin both fps and tps and i dont have a personal favourite between the two but i would like to see a few more games where you can a choice between the 2 like fallout 3 and i would also like to see some action animations in fps eg. the character putting his hand on a scanner or something instead of just clicking a button and the light turning from red to green.

I prefer first person because I just enjoy FPS more in general than other shooters. It's not because of the immersion. OF course, some games would be plain ridiculous in first person, and I enjoy both.

I tend to prefer third-person over first-person, as my field of vision in third-person is more pleasant. However, I still enjoy certain first-person games and I would never want them to be available only with a third-person camera. Such games include Halo, Thief, The Elder Scrolls, and The Chronicles of Riddick.

To be honest, I prefer 3rd Person :)

Imagine any fighting (Tekken, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear etc) game in 1st person XD That would handle like a garbage truck.

I prefer 3rd person. Mostly because FPS still after oh so many years makes me feel like a floating camera. Out of a gameplay standpoint it's superior, but for immersion and feeling it kinda kills it :-/ Can still enjoy a good FPS but I prefer being able to see my character.

The game that has tackled the FP perspective best is in my opinion Rainbow Six Vegas (2). The constant switching in between third and first person perspective sort of gave me the feeling that I knew who I was playing as, it really helped me enjoying the game when I could see "myself" without having it disrupt the gameplay.
