It could be the design.

It could be the personality.

It could be the dialog.

Whatever it is, this character makes you happy you even bought the game, let alone everything else that comes with it. You love controlling this character, everything out of his or her mouth strikes every good chord with you.

What is your most favorite player-controlled character in the last five years?

Mine, without a doubt, is Lucio from Overwatch. He is a breath of fresh air in a sea of disgruntled, bitter, samey protagonist. He's about teamwork, he genuinely cares about things, and he has just enough party that makes me smile. I was seriously 'meh' with overwatch until I saw his character design. A few other characters made me think the game would be better than I thought, but Lucio was the first thing that made me really want to play the game.

Now that I've played the Beta, I know I'm going to main him and play to my heart's content. I'm going to be horrible with him as I am not used to non hitscan weapons, but I'm going to be horrible with a smile on my face.

What about you? What Player controlled characters feel like they were made just for you and your tastes?

Heh. Funny thing, I detest everything about bloody Lucio. He's a DJ wearing roller blades. He fights with a wub-wub gun. He's painfully cheerful.

"Look at this team! We're gonna do great!"
No Lucia, we are not. We have two Tracers and two snipers on a king of the hill map.

Which is a shame because in terms of utility he's probably the best character in the game. I haven't seen stats or anything but I'd bet his win rate is way up there.

I can't actually think of a favourite character. All my favourites are NPCs.

I guess Joel and Ellie from the The Last of Us. Ellie felt like she was written by someone who has actually talked to a teenager recently and Joel was, well... a disgruntled and bitter protagonist. But he was really well executed!

Clearly you and I have very different tastes Mr Jones.

The Protagonist from Saints Row. She doesn't care that she's causing tremendous suffering to everyone she comes into contact with. She relishes in causing death and destruction, and there's nothing more fun for her than blowing shit up. There's no usual pretention that she maybe has some good in her and that she really doesn't enjoy what she's doing. While other characters are questioning their actions, she's killing people while yelling, "Everybody should do this!" In fact, she's so irredeemable that Satan wants her to marry his daughter. And as a stand-in for an open world crime game, that aspect of loving every second of chaos makes her the perfect protagonist and stand-in for the player. And unlike other player-insert characters (e.g. Gordon Freeman, Link), she doesn't have to remain silent to do so (minus the first game I guess, but I started on the second).

I do have one. Not from a game, but I relate quite closely with Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke. He's calm, quiet, thoughtful, skilled, observant, hard working, brave, has a balanced view on making a living within your environment while also caring for said environment. A lot of things I value in people.

Studio Ghibli's protags in their earlier fantasy work tend to perhaps be just a little too perfect (Nausicaa fits in here too), but I really enjoy their calm earnestness and bravery.

It's not about his weapon.

The key to doing good with him is knowing when to switch between healing and speed buffs, and when to pop the boost.

I only shoot with him to provide pressure, or to use his Secondary fire to shove people away from objectives. My main jam with him is to run around and do a LOT of healing and irritate the enemy.

Out of the 4 supports, he's the one I'm gonna use. I'm more of a Roadhog/McCreedy/Reinhart guy though (that last one was a surprise. I thought I'd hate him, but holy cow, rocket tackles are FUN!)

Anime taking over your vidja game thread.

Really though I'd have to say I admire Geralt of Rivia the most, despite so much criticism lobbed towards him as being very deadpan and emotionless, I truly appreciate and recognize the subtleties of his personality, he has a very quick wit, is drawn to helping people but not above profiting off it, is very blunt and honest, yet possesses guile and charm. He's just all around a fascinating character and a true joy to be able to play.

I don't know if I could point to one that's "mah boi" moreso than another character, but BJ Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein: The New Order ranks up there. I can't remember anything about him that I didn't like.

Player controlled characters are typically dull as dirt. I really liked Zelda from Windwaker. She put a smile on my face every time she showed up.

I made Guts in a game once, so he counts. I like the way he kills villains mid-speech.

Maybe he's just a sarcastic asshole.

To go along this curtailing of the original question - I'm picking my avatar, Mustang. Gets up people for making stupid decision, but allows them to make their own choice (even though he may be closely monitoring them without their knowledge.) Great tactician and fervently fights for his friends. He's quiet and patient

Irelia from league. She can play as an assassin and a disruptor. I love her lore and her skillset.

I gotta go with Sakura from Street Fighter IV.
Being a fan of trash moe anime, I usually jump at the chance to play as cute girls, given the option. I'm also a fan of fighting games, with my preferred characters being ones with big combos and big damage. The problem with these two things is that they tend not to overlap; The cute characters are generally the speedy type, while the big damage I want belongs to the big burly dudes. So when I finally got to grips with Sakura and found her combos do a buttload of damage and she looks cute while doing it, I'd found my character.
Shame I was still pretty bad at the game.

Secondary vote goes to May from Guilty Gear Xrd, for similar reasons.
Though she's got even more points in the cute department, she's less the kind of character I like to play. She can do crazy damage, but she's more about knockdowns and setups. Setups involving adorable dolphins and otters. Because everything about May is cute.

Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia.
I love everything about him from his design to his laid back attitude. With most Tales of game you get the feeling that the main character is the strongest in their respective world, although he doesn't have as many powers as other Tales of characters his will and swordsmanship seem to get him through anything he attempts. His character oozes cool.

Close runners up being

Bayonneta
I love Bayonetta. She surfs on missiles and has killed god.

Leon S Kennedy
His design is awesome and so is everything he does and says. Even his cheesey one liners make me smile.

Would it be cheating if I said all nine mercs from Team Fortress 2? All of them are hilarious and awesome in their own way.

If I had to choose one I'd go with my main, the Spy. I love infiltrating behind enemy lines, striking from the shadows and evading pursuit. It gives me perverse glee to watch the resulting paranoia unfold, with people spy checking each other and Pyros shooting flames every which way. I also love TF2's character design[footnote]before cosmetics sullied it, that is.[/footnote], and the Spy is no exception. The ski mask, the suit, the spindly limbs, the ever-present cigarette...it all combines to create a suave yet dangerous look. The character himself has a plethora of entertaining dialogue that's a delicious blend of refinement, arrogance and psychopath.

Having said that, I actually preferred the Spy's early portrayal, when certain elements of his background were still unknown. Back in the day fans liked to emphasize the Spy's role as a sneaky bastard out to knife everyone. Now his character has devolved somewhat into a sex fiend thanks to the reveal of his relationship with Scout's mom.

I have a game and a movie example that really resonated with me:
Morrigan from Dragon Age Origins
and
The Operative from Firefly
They are both smart and know what they want. They both have a cold calculating nature when they come up against an obstacle and don't let their emotions dissuade them from their goals. But you can tell deep down they both really do care. Other great characters include Deadpool, Viconia (BG2), and ... wow, almost every character I associate with is either a villain or at best an anti-hero...

Cole McGrath from inFamous and inFamous 2.

I love his power set, I love his personality, and I love his relationship with his best friend Zeke. I love how cool it feels to run around with him in the city, feeling like an actual superhero, something very few superhero games are able to actually pull off.

Well, normally, I'd say it would be cheating.

... But you're a spy, so I guess that's in character :p

Ohhhh man, where do I begin. Wellll..... I guess I should start with an actual PC right, and not an NPC.

How 'bout I start with Vincent from Catherine. He's immature, lazy, selfish-minded and any aspect of being an adult and being mature freaks him out and he bitches to his friends about how pushy his girlfriend is. "A manchild approaching maturity like it's a Bengal Tiger", to quote Yahtzee. He's also a loser who just has one of those "TALK TO ME I'LL LISTEN TO ALL YOUR PROBLEMS" faces I guess since everyone spills all their secrets to him without him even trying. Not that I'd know what that's like. -clears throat- But he's also hardy and refuses to COMPLETELY be a passive whiner.

Also I feel the need to include Rhys from Tales from the Borderlands here... though it's a wonder I don't just say "every Troy Baker character ever. That's me." Again, Rhys is a loser but he THINKS he has it all under control until someone else comes along and shows him that he reeeeeally isn't. Also, he looks up to someone but realises that he probably shouldn't because that person's vitriolic, poisonous and not a good role model. He has a couple of skills so he's not ALL talk and he has the bad habit of saying shit without thinking first and when he plays it silent, it's always a surprise. Also his socks are amazing and socks are often an overlooked part of a gentleman's wardrobe and life is too short for boring socks.

[[ I'd say Handsome Jack buuuuuuuut I don't wanna sound like a Tumblrina because those piss me the hell off. "Oh Jack's not a bad guy, he's just tortured and I'm a jackass and he's a jackass so we're so similar lol!" No joke, I've heard that in actual conversation. ]]

Y'know, now that I'm thinking about it, I'll come back when I have even more PCs ('cuz if I got into characters from movies and books, we'd be here allll friggin' day)

I can always relate to Travis Touchdown for the most part-

He has no aspiration in life (right now, all I just want is to lived by myself, dream jobs and a girlfriends comes later).

His motel apartment seen ideal for me if only it was abit bigger (made for one person and I don't like company per say since I doubt my mates would visit me).

No, I am NOT into moe (I see lilicon as pedo) but that doesn't means my hands are clean.

Also he look cool to the point I can cosplay as him which I did in real life.
