I don't frequent any other forums, because they're all too niche on single topics, whilst the escapist covers...well, most things.
Besides, having an international committee of many generally intelligent and funny people allows for distinct views, opinions and news reports from the corners of the globe helps one learn about other cultures/peoples while still remaining in the comfortable format of video games and such.

The Escapist is the only forum for me. There was a time when I frequented 4chan, but I don't know if imageboards count as forums.

My very first forum, though, was Smosh.com. It's completely horrible now, but circa 2006-ish... honestly I'd say it was on par with this one right here. It had a really good community before the format change saw almost literally all of its users exodus the hell out of there.

OP beat me to making this thread. Admittedly I've not here been long, more of a lurker than anything. But in all seriousness this is one of the best forums I've been to.

Lots of odd people- and lots of awesome people too. This is my description of the escapist community thus far,

and now, to join in on the party

The Escapist forums are alright, but can be even more annoying than most. Whenever you encounter a flamewar, it usually involves this kind of infuriating, passive-aggressive, pseudo-intellectual tone and they can go on for fucking days, with people adopting a snooty air of superiority and intellectual pretension while denying and any all accusations of flaming. Somehow, it's even worse than the usual forumgoers "lol yr a dick".

But besides that, I have a nice time here.

At least most of the superiority seems to have gone away. I remember a time when it was a lot worse

Like for instance a news article on a 4 year old accidentally shooting themselves after finding their parents handgun (Which had been left on the coffee table).

One poster said he was glad the kid was dead and removed from the genepool.

Oh god, I remember them. Like one instance where asmall child accidentally fell a train platform onto the subway tracks because he was immersed in his PSP. Apparently the fact that a small child made a mistake grants us the authority to proclaim his life worthless.

Yeah, right enough, they have died down. I remember a time when you couldn't bloody move for pricks claiming that the species was worthless, that the pursuit of base pleasures was pointless, and that we were all headed for armageddon due to our apparent collective stupidity and herd mentality. Funny how those guys never seem to mention the inherent dangers of extreme apathy, eh? Although a few months ago I did see a forum in which a significant chunk of the Escapist's community claimed that eugenics would be acceptable.

They seemed to think that we'd be better off if anyone with a condition as mild as aspergers was never born, that we should be able to decide the worths of other people's lives provided they suffer from some form of disability, that parents who look after healthy, loving, happy children who happen to suffer from some kind of physical or mental condition should never have been allowed to procreate at all, and that the state has the right to decide whether or not someone can have kids.

We were watching a bunch of insecure, self-loathing nihilists claim that they deserved the gift of life more than one of the downs syndrome kids at my old school who spent most of his time chuckling and running around outside, simply because they didn't think the kid didn't have the mental capacity to appreciate it and viewed him as a threat to our continued survival.

Oh, and this was all based on the completely unscientific belief that eugenics programs actually work - which they demonstrably don't.

I swear, I've never looked at these forums the same way since then. It was almost as wierd as that time when all those peadophiles crawled out of the woodwork to tell us all (in the midst of a flare-up of debates around lolicon) that we shouldn't be so crass and judgemental towards people who find children sexually attractive, and to educate us on why a peadophile isn#t necessarily an abuse case waiting to happen.

I mean I suppose that second point is pretty true, but damn...

Well there is a difference between a Paedophile and a Child Molester but this isnt really the place to discuss it.

Long story short this place has lost a lot of its elitism from back in the day. Its still there, just thankfully no where near as bad
