Quite often a game will kick your ass for the first few hours until something happens that changes everything and suddenly you've gained the advantage.

It could be discovering freeze + Stone Fist in Dragon Age, getting the Sniper Rifle in New Vegas, getting the grav gun in HL2.... any weapon, skill, perk or mechanic that you found to be a game changer.

I'll start us off:

Fallout 3

Discovering that the vendors respawn their caps every 3 days and can be waited for in 2 hour periods.

Couple this with a high Repair skill and Uncle Roe's investments and it's a complete game changer.

When you get the railgun in MGS4, the game officially throws away challenge until it takes the damn thing away from you.

New Vegas was just FUUUUUU until I stopped using the Caravan Shotgun and switched to the .357 Magnum. All problems solved.

I found the shotguns pretty useless in New Vegas until I got the Riot Shotgun with the Surgeon perk, then they become beastly.

In FIFA 11, when I discovered how well I can make goals from corners and crosses.

The first few games all I did was try to rush the ball into the goal.

Forget any guns for new vegas;
My first playthrough went something like this:
1)create character
2)recruit boone
3)roll credits

Although this machine counts for me because it only takes 50 science to get

I find This Machine to be a bit 'meh' to be honest. It doesn't have the accuracy of the Cowboy Repeater or Sniper Rifle and takes up a lot of Action Points.

Finding the chainsaw in doom, i have never been more satisfied though!
I found that thing really hard to use, you have to get into the enemys' faces with it and soak up a bunch of damage while mashing them up.

Pretty much every RPG has a stage where you get a particular weapon/power/whatever that trivialises the game.

TeS: Oblivion turned into a boringly easy game when I figured out how to make every arrow hit perfectly (sneak attack criticals)

Or abusing their AI by using a melee weapon with a little bit of reach, and stepping in and out of their attack range. Pretty lame.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth becomes quite easy after you receive a pistol and shotgun... That's also when it lost the rest of it's scare.

Although, it became even easier when you get an alien energy/lightning gun.

Fallout 3; either go straight for the Anchorage DLC and get the stealth suit and you can loot everything without so much as killing one enemy OR you can go straight for Ol' Painless in that Dave place and at about level 10-14 you can kill just about anything with a high sneak skill and some distance.

Mass Effect 2; Sometimes I had to check if the difficult was still on Insanity because I would forgo saving because some missions were so easy. (Although all main game missions, like collector related ones, always were hard :( )

Ah, Ol' Painless. Still my favorite gun form a game.

Interesting you mention ME2 INsanity, because I found after the Collector ship ambush level the game became much easier due to you finally being upgraded and kitted out. Perfect example for the thread.

Also, upgrading Miranda's buffs was a game changer.

I'm not sure if this counts for anything but I didn't really understand the concept of ammo powers and their worth, and was not too keen on if Overload would help me get through Barriers or just Shields until after the Collector ambush mission, and even then I always felt swarmed by the Collectors because I didn't know how to deal with having the fight Harbinger 10 times because I didn't kill the goons first :(
