This always pops up, and all it does it show what historical amnesia the older gens have. What, us millennials are the worst because we use Twitter and Facebook? We troll one another and call people we don't like 'fags'? Anonymous posts dirty pictures and everyone freaks out!

Anyone remember the 70s and 80s, when gays were being killed simply for being gay? When the idea of a gay person was so repugnant, you'd never be within 10miles of one for fear of catching Aids? And lets not forgot how selfish the Reagan years made people. But you know, selfies are certainly the moral equivalent of all that.

Or before that? The 50s and 60s? Anyone remember what it was like to be black during those days? Not a lot of fun, and remember that was our grandparents gen holding the hoses. Then again, millennials like Lady GaGa and Wikipedia, so I guess it evens out.

Or the turn of the century, when the Irish and dirty chinks were being beaten to death, and women couldn't vote! But hey, we like Minecraft and PewDiePie, so I guess fuck us.

When you really look at history, the millennials are the smartest, most clever, environmental, global and social Gen in a very very very long time.

I thought you meant our generation was fucked by the previous. And I would agree mostly.
Well, there may be more fucking this generation than there's been in any generation before, so this generation could be getting fucked by the last generation, the next generation, the bank, the local crackhead, the next-door neighbours and the police in the space of a week. But at least it's mostly the harmless kind of fucking. The 60s, 70s and 80s? That was when people were really getting fucked. And back in the 30s and 40s? Whole countries were gettin' royally fucked. We're doing pretty well for ourselves now; we don't fuck around when it comes to fucking...all right, well, some of us do, but as far as fucking goes, it's usually the pretty benevolent kind.

See that? Yeah, not like that. That's more like the Tony Montana school of fucking.

A bit of a tangent, but kind of related to this generation: does anyone else hate it when they see a meme, article or comment about "90s kids"?

We're alright, but from what I've seen the majority of us are pretty fucking spineless and way too occupied with no hurting feelings.

You sound like you think that the rights of minorities is the biggest determining factor when it comes to how "successful" a generation is. It's too early to see what people born in the late 80s and 90s will be like in the future, but social acceptance doesn't mean anything when the leaders of the world are incompetent, lazy, idiotic, selfish, etc.

I would make the arguments that the rising rights of minorities is the biggest determining factor. What is the point of celebrating the accomplishments of previous generations when only a small percentage of the world population (white males) actually got to enjoy it.

Yep, you're fucked.

Big time.

Though not in the sense you seem to interpret.

You see, around my parts, when they say, "This generation is fucked," they mean in the sense that they won't have it easy. Buying a house? Building a house? Loans, taxes, job security, etc. We're fucked because we're heading for some rough patches.

So, yeah, even though I loathe facebook and tweeting and iPhones, I don't think our generation is fucked in the sense of: "we're the worst generation ever". However, we are pretty fucked in the sense that the nearby future looks pretty darn bleak.

Hah! How about that, my parents forced the exact same rule on me, though I had a PSOne, not a GameBoy. I had to nag for more than a year before Saint Nicholas finally got me one. (And no freakin' way our household would ever get one of those asocial handheld devices, no sir!)

I never really know what to think of this old discussion. Our merits and our faults all arise from the circumstances created by previous generations, so I never feel the need to be defensive about the generation I belong to.

?Our youth now love luxury, they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.? -Aristophenes, Circa 420 BC

The whole "The children are going to ruin everything!" sentiment has been around as long as humans have lived.

If this generation is fucked it will be because of outside forces and not because we all happen to be born under a cursed moon

There are a lot if challenges we face...the looming threat of climate change, technology...

I ignore BS that talks about generations in absolutes...it's all vapid fluff and soon well move into the next fad/trend rinse repeat

I am regularly told that my generation will have it worse than our parents. So if there is anyone who has a right to complain it would be us. Depletion of natural resources, an economy that is going down the drain. Don't you dare criticize the ones who will have to fix your mess.
The problem is those descriptions are lies, sensationalism in the name of selling papers in the morning. Sure the economy isn't great, and it takes a bit more effort to get oil then it used to, but lets not pretend things are somehow worst off then they where before (hell, lets not pretend things are as bad as they where in the 90s).
The world isn't ending, I suppose, but we are inheriting our ancestors mistakes, which makes their insufferable attitude as awful as their incompetence. The baby boomers onward really messed up. A Cold War, Vietnam, multiple wars in the Middle East, terrorism, insane national debt, an authoritative government that spies on its own citizens and tortures foreign combatants.... They've squandered everything, and expect the current generation to look after them while also fixing their mistakes, and all the while I'm asking when will it be our time? There are too many old men in congress. Our forefathers were cowards, they're still cowards, and they're fools. All of them? No. But as a generation? Absolutely.

I have little patience for the older generations. I hope to god that my generation learns from their mistakes, and makes things easier for those that follow.

I happen to be a part of this generation, and honestly whenever someone says some thing along these lines, I hate it. As if you guys were any better. I think that people are feeling old and are refusing to accept change. This coming from a guy whose parents are extremely traditional, I used to be only allowed to play my GameBoy for 30 minutes a day. Maybe I'm just bitter, but imagine how you feel when Fox News talks shit about gaming. I don't necessarily agree with everything my generation has come up with, but jeez give us a chance. You guys weren't the best role models either.

Anyway, just wanted to ask what you guys really do think about our generation.
This generation is much better off than most generations, honestly. In the US anyway, until the Vietnam war the media was rather constrained and didn't often criticize parts of the government which were deemed "sacred" like the military. But after Vietnam, the media became its own monster and the government no longer held sway over them. That's caused another problem with media outlets catering to specific beliefs, but now we have so much media we can look at multiple sources and find some kind of truth within it.

Also, the Internet has done wonders for the world--information and communication are the two most powerful shapers of the world, and the Internet has revolutionized both. Information on every subject is easier to come by, from how taxes work to how to get birth control. Even though you have conservative parents if there's something you want to know about sex or birth control, you can find it. We can know what's going on in France in real time, and through mediums like Twitter and Facebook and Reddit we don't have to rely on the mainstream media to see it. While we haven't fixed our problems to do with race, gender, LGBT, etc. we're at least TALKING about these problems and more or less stumbling in the right direction. Yes we have problems with religious extremism, global warming, the wealth gap and the like, but life expectancy in the developed world is higher than ever, and more places in the world than ever are "developed" or on their way to being so.

Every generation believes it's the best generation, and that the younger generation is just screwing it all up. Anybody who criticizes a generation as a whole is not worth listening to.

I'm not seeing anything which makes that generation stand out among any other apart from the level of technology at their disposal.

OT: I go by the logic of "every generation does this so whatever". Things look bleak, but then again when don't things look bleak for the future?

I usually find such things funny, especially when they don't discuss things specific to 90s kids. The only thing they can really bring up is 90s or early 00s pop music because chances are the Gen Z'ers watched Toy Story and played Half-Life or Doom when they were young. Thankfully I spent my childhood experiencing entertainment from both sides of that year Buzzfeed despises so much so I can smugly state "yeah, I do remember that, so what?"

Also sometimes we can get good reactions such as this:

To be fair though, the baby boomers were also given their ancestor's mistakes. The cold war and Vietnam were spurred by the red scare and McCarthyism. But the red scare of the 50s was the second red scare the US has faced--the first starting in 1918 during the Bolshevik revolution in Russia. The rise of Hitler and World War II provided a distraction from Russia for a while, but that first red scare set the stage for icy relations between the US and Russia and the second red scare. The baby boomers didn't really become adults until after McCarthyism had fully set in, and by then US politics had also begun its polarization between the left and the right.

Exactly. What generation is he even talking about?

If we assume that current 15-18y old ones, then
1)"Your" music sucks. I'm not sure is it your really, but 99% of music that is currently on radio can go and suck big hairy balls
2)Your early teens happened with social networks. Evidence of your stupidity may never disappear and this is reason why many of you may actually be fucked.

And that's it.

P.S. Also- how many of current teens know how to play chess? Just curious.

Old people freed the slaves, old people allowed multi racial couples, old people gave women the vote, old people invented the god damn internet. We're not fucked but we sure as hell are living in others success more so than our own.
