This is bizzare...playing the game by "not playing the game"

So you know how in Oblivion your Athletics skill goes up slowly when you run and swim? Well that obviously takes FOREVER as a minor skill, so I basically have to swim for hours to raise it. And well...

Right now I just taped my analog stick to be held moving forward so my character is swimming by herself while I do something else that isn't boring. And just when my character hit land I quickly turned her around to swim the other way, so I gotta check back in 5 minutes or so.

I really don't think I should be ashamed of doing this, especially since all the other skills go up much faster this one is way too tedious to raise alone so I have no problem doing this.

Has anyone else ever done this or have seen someone else do this? I seriously doubt it, the only time this comes to mind is in Yahtzee's video of Super Paper Mario when he suggests that you hold down the move button when running in a hamster wheel, or when he said that you train your skills in EVE online by selecting which skills to train and turning off the game.

EDIT: I tried using a rubber band first but on the 360 it doesn't work when putting it on one analog stick only, though I might try pulling both sticks towards each other.

EDIT 2: Found a less elastic and thicker rubber band to hold the left analog stick forward and a thinner more elastic rubber band to hold the right analog stick right, so my character is swimming in circles.

Nah, athletics isn't too useful anyway.

And I can't judge whether or not you should be ashamed of that, seeing as I went through most of the game with 100% chameleon. xD

I'm a mage so I raise Athletics along with Speed so I can always outrun enemies backwards while spamming spells at them.

Yeah I've done that in a lot of games, usually either to level a skill or grind for an item.
I usually use rubber bands on the controller or set it down in a way that holds down the button.

Also, I've never played Oblivion, but you could probably tape the other analog stick down to the left or right and swim in circles instead of resetting it every five minutes

Yes, in fact that's how I increased my sneak skill inside an inn. I sold the game a week later. All that effort wasted eh?

You're very likely to see this from Oblivion as a game, mostly because the AI lets you get away with it. I guarantee you can find at least twenty players who've switched over to watch TV while spamming a cheap Alteration spell with RB. The main thing with that game was that it could easily be abused, but you only did so if it didn't detract too much from your experience and enjoyment of it.

As for me, I've gone all out before. I've watched the playthroughs of Silent Hill 2 and 3, and am halfway through The Room. My main argument for this is that I'm terrible at orienteering (even the maps in Thief Gold put me off) and I'd probably miss every other crucial item, and be wondering around for hours on end, back-tracking without even noticing it.

What I really loved was how the Silent Hill games dropped little messages to you all the time, in the form of letters, diary entries and newspapers, that gave you a better understanding of the town and its development. Unfortunately, most people who record playthroughs quickly skip through these, so wrestling with the pause button is a challenge for both your timing skills and your patience.

I find a rock, and put it on the cast button to level up my healing.
No, don't be ashamed :p

I did the same thing, but with sneak. And I didn't use tape. Don't want to get the controller sticky
Besides, it was Bethesda's fault for making athletics take so long to level :p

In Assassin's Creed, I attacked a guard and taped the block button and waited for fifteen minutes. I got an achievement AND I had time to walk my dog. Awesome.

Mages: Kicking your ass in retreating and while retreating [sub]Tell me that was a good joke, I worked 5 seconds on it[/sub]

I can sometimes turn of my brain while playing some songs on Rockband I know in and out, so I'm not really playing the game, my body does it for me.

A faster way to do this would be to use a hair elastic.

Use the elastic to join the analogue sticks together so that you are essentially running around in circles...

Not that I've ever used this tactic *shifty eyes*

Dammit, I lost The Game >.<

OT-No need to be ashamed of it.

Assuming you are on a console, this must be boring the hell out of you if you have nothing else to do =/

LOL that is actually a good idea, I might just do it right now xD

Also it's annoying because I can't check how much my Ahtletics skill has raised because as soon as I bring up my skills tab it quickly scrolls upward.

You could do this in Final Fantasy VII at the golden saucer with the arm wrestling game. You just taped down a couple buttons, went to sleep, and woke up with a million credits.

I did something similar in Pokémon Colosseum. There was a place you could run forever to lower the shadow bar on your shadow Pokémon. I did this quite a bit, because it was easier than the other methods.
