my favorite FPS would have to be BLOOD, simply because it had a great storyline, awesome weapons, and endless amounts of fun by just kicking around a decapitated head. In my opinion BLOOD and DOOM will forever live in infamy as the first great shooters.

half-life and doom were released way before most shooters but I'd have to say Crysis, it didn't do much to the genre but it was certainly the most polished.

Timesplitters Future Perfect. A damned fine game. Slick aiming, a fantastic single player, kooky characters, genuinely funny and highly enjoyable multiplayer.

Hard to say, if you're calling it a "shooter". If STALKER were a third-person game with more RPG-style combat it might still be a really great game for completely different reasons. So when you ask that question, I'm going to take it Yahtzee-style as "what's most fun to shoot" as opposed to any assemblance of story or intricate gameplay mechanics.

For this I might say Gears of War. Sure, the whole game follows a very repetitive formula, but that's because it does actually work well. Although I didn't like them for throwing every concept of creativity to the wind, the cover system stacked up well.
Team Fortress 2 is also very fun, for reasons that have almost become hard to explain. I just like how the community has yet to collectively say "Man, X class is completely useless...all the experts just play as Y." which is something that hasn't happened since my previous favorite class-based shooter, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. (NOTE to ID fans: Please disregard the presence of any Strogg-involving Enemy Territory game.)

Deus Ex - storyline, custimising, sound, variety, lovely smart ai
UT 99 Goty(assault) - hammerjump ftw
Serious Sam first encounter - quirky but fun
Delta Force TaskForceDagger - one shot one kill
Painkiller - Rampaging through hoards with 'shirukens and lightning' :p

I enjoyed system shock 2 as well but it was practically the same as deus ex. So I didn't mention it in my list even though its a total winner.

newer bugged engines just aren't my cup of tea..

I could take the easy way out and say Halo 3,but I'll not do that. There are more parts of games that I like the best, rather than the game as a whole.

I loved the strider battle in Half life 2 ep.2
In COD4 the best part was the huge firefight in the fair, during the flashback
The Storm and the Covenant levels in Halo 3 were awesome
Then In GTA4 I had a blast on the heist mission with Packie

I don't remember if I already said this or not, but Bloodrayne was fun. And Rayne herself is extremely fine, extremely sexy attitude and behavior, too.

"Oh God, yes, Rayne, you naughty, evil girl."

I liked Deus Ex and the first Max Payne about equally.

I gotta give props to Condemned though, not a great story, kinda wonky on the graphics and main character, but excellent combat. Well, at least the part where the NPCs beat the crap out of each other and scream obscenities.

I have yet to play Bioshock (I have no excuse, I worked at 2K for crying out loud!), but its on my to-do list when I get back to the U.S.

Hmm...

This would be easier if I focused on shooters as my principle source of enjoyment, but of the ones that I have played I'd put the Dues Ex series at the top, just above Portal.

The Dues Ex games [The first one, which I only played a demo of and the second one which I own] brought to me a sense of control few shooters have given me before. I actually played basketball in it. Something that may seem trivial to some people, but it just shows the level of interactivity within the game. You could interact with just about any object that wasn't bolted down to the ground, you could turn things on and off, and all with the addition of being able to blow someone's face apart and a genuinely interesting storyline.

Portal was a quirky, short, puzzle game in shooter format which I adored immensely. One of the few faults with it, though, was the lack of violence. Now some people may see that as an odd statement, but when I play shooters I expect to do just that -- Shoot things. I don't really play them for storyline, or for puzzles, or for quirkiness -- I play them to blow shit up, and shoot people in the face. While Portal was very enjoyable, and I have replayed it a few times, it just didn't have that stress relief of blowing things up that I look for in shooting games.

Such a hard call. I think that different shooters offer different gameplay experinces. I loved the atmosphere, story, and feel of Deus Ex so much so I still occasionally dip into it. One on the best things about it was the RPG element of being able to change how one played the game.

Crysis was too short and let down by the final missions but the initial stuff had such a great tactical feel. Once again the limited weapon slots and the suit gave one real scope to play in so many different ways. (Plus the cry engine is b-e-a-u-tiful)

Doom scared the life out of me when I first played it and got my heart racing, but now looks so embryonic and clunky.

Half Life 2 may be the one, from that opening scene being chased up the stairs unarmed through a owellian housing block, to the final off beat sequence it drew me into an imersive world, where in a peculiar way the shooter aspect became secondry.

I think the mistake that many game designers make is thinking that it is all about the weapons and graphics. When games have brains, Deus Ex, Half Life 1&2, System Shock 2 etc..., then they become great.

Oh and as for console gaming, Golden Eye all the way
