This is one of those inconvenient moral decisions.

If one of your good friends was going to be hanged and you could save his life by serving 3 years in a very badly run prison, one where life would be hell, would you do it?

I saw a similar concept in a movie i recently watched, named Back To Paradise, with such concept. It made me think.

I personally would do it, i couldn't live with the guilt.

EDIT: since the actual crime is under question by quite a few, i'll say a few more words.
You are also responsible for the crime, but you fled the scene before any witnesses showed up, meaning you're partly responsible. It's only that good friend of your's who got caught.
i mean hypothetically. I don't want anyone giving me crap that they wouldn't do it.

That's an interesting question. I suppose it would really depend on what they did. If they were being hung for murder I would just have to live with the guilt of letting them get hung, because I couldn't live with the guilt of letting someone like that walk. But if it was a more minor thing, I might. It's a tough call...

I know I sound like a horrible person, but it depends on which one.

I have some friends who aren't worth their salt.

Or pepper.

..... Or carbon....

I'd say string him/her/it up. If they committed a crime, they knew the consequences. Justice must be done, even if it's your friend or family member.

If they were going to be hanged for no reason what-so-ever... well, different matter. Though then the prison bit wouldn't really matter, would it?

No screw him, he shouldn't have got caught, I'll just find a new friend, a friend who has an aversion to crime and ropes.

I'm with you here. For most of 'em I would easily decide that I wouldn't.

I think the generally accepted answer will be: "If they committed a crime, then no."

I'd lay down my life for some of my friends. Protecting them from a crime they shouldn't have commited though? No way. Except maybe if they'd HAD to do it for "the greater good" or if it had been to protect/save me/another friend.

Depends on the crime really, but yeah I think I would. Of course I'd escape shortly afterwards, probably with help from said friend, since after all it is a poorly run prison.

It would really depend on what crime he was being hung for. Although, if it was a public hanging...bit of a toss up, really.
