This is one of those inconvenient moral decisions.

Three years in prison vs. endless guilt and possible emotional outbursts from said friend's family and loved-ones.

I'm more for the prison.

True, and all of my friends are good friends. That doesn't mean that they're worth 3 years of my life, though.

I don't know really, I would probably not go with it and then regret the decision the rest of my life.

Yeah, I most likely would. I survived my secondary school; that'd put me in good stead for a hard prison...

But in all seriousness, yes, I think I'd do that. The guilt after they were hanged would be too much for me to handle.

Why would they be hanged? If they were guilty of a serious crime I wouldn't save them and I wouldn't be friends with them. If was for dating someone of a different race, I would save them without a moments hesitation.

A UK prison: Probably...

A South African prison: No way in hell. Not even if they were going to tear him apart with wild horses. At least wild horses don't gangrape you.

I know I sound like a horrible person, but it depends on which one.

I have some friends who aren't worth their salt.

I'm with you here. For most of 'em I would easily decide that I wouldn't.

I guess I didn't finish my thought properly because my friend got back with chow mein. For most of them I would easily decide I wouldn't. The others would take more thought, but I'm pretty sure my answer would be the same. Actually, who knows. Thinking about what you would do doesn't really give reliable conclusions.

It wouldn't be very reliable for use in practice, but sometimes it's just interesting to think about things, hypothetically.

Hmmm, depends on the friend. One of my apparent 'friends', who I'd actually lived with for the past nine months at university, stabbed me in the back about two days before we left the city for summer, so that dented my trust in half of my other friends who I'd been living with too. However, some friends I know are loyal and I've known for years, I'd probably take the three years to save their lives. Those I can't trust as much now, I'd have to think about it a bit beforehand.

If a friend of mine did a crime bad enough to be hanged, why would I want to be his friend?

This. To me, sacrificing yourself to save someone seems better than living in a private hell for x number of years, except less cathartic in the end.

I would take the three years. Even if it wasn't for a good friend, just someone random.

Of course, I may just like to think that.

prison, 3 years? Hell no, I'd rather the death penalty, that I could manage.
