Ah, finally, the 'facist' is banned.

Anyway. Every time I make a creative thread that hasn't been done before, it rarely lasts more than a page. So I'm thinking that people just LIKE the same old VS. threads and stupid polls, whether they admit it or not.
Couldn't agree more. A lot of original and interesting content barely lasts a page and a bit, and then sinks down the bottom, while VS threads and repeat topics and post dumping threads go on for 4 or 5 pages.

It's quite irritating. Oh, and I blame Yahtzee also. I'm thankful he exists, because I wouldn't be here otherwise, however he's a double-edged sword. He's sheep are irritating, and it's worse that he's referred to them as sheep in his own videos, yet they soldier on.

Eh, you should be more lenient. I remember when I was a wee paperboy, I did a lot of stupid shit. Time is a teacher though.

The good will stay, and will learn the arts of fine posting, the rest will just go away and find a new site to hold their attention for the next couple of weeks.
True. But if you've been around later then the last year then you'll notice the change. Too many people assume this place is like the rest of the net. Drawn in by Yahtzee who swears too much, they too feel that the Escapist is just the Yahtzee forum where everyone can swear and act like idiots.
Agreed. Now, punch anyone?

Christ...just ignore it.
This. You learn to ignore them after a while and whenever I encounter a new person I point them in the directions of the rules. We can only hope they learn and do the same.
then you become a grammer nazi and i avoid the thread all together

I have been seeing a few threads similar to this one. Let's be reasonable. The Escapist is an Oasis of reason and logic in the vast deserts of the Internet. it only make sense that newer uses have som difficulty adjusting. This isn't 4chan or something.

Trolls are trolls are trolls.
Best thing to do is just get over it and ignore them.
Trying to beat the troll just feeds it.
Just be happy that you and a select group of others are superior to the new-fags and trolls, maybe it'll get you through a day of forum surfing.

I haven`t been here very long myself, and I do try my best to be pleasent, coherent and make relevent posts.

However, the lack of good topics to discuss is a bit dissapointing at times.

How about introducing a thread rating system? That way, if someone`s thread is rated badly, they will not try to make it again and maybe think more before the next one.

I honestly don't care. I think its up to every person to decide how to act in the community.

When I joined I didn't make a Thread untill I had like 200 posts. And when I did, I dotted my Is and crossed my Ts.

I thinks it up to peoples common sense that the "Halo is for suxxors" Thread has been done thousands of times. If they don't, they're kinda stupid.

I'm guessing as the summer months wind down, true users will stay and the place will thrive again

Enforcing rules about spelling and grammar is absolutely a matter of tea-sipping. Language is a means of communication; it doesn't matter if I spell "asshole" with one S and no E so long as the idea that I think you're an asshole gets across. Banning someone (or putting them in the timeout corner of "probation") because they misspell words is nothing short of ludicrous pedantry.

And here's something funny: you misspelled "etiquette" and "perceive." Infraction time!
You know something? That's kind of an asshole thing to say. I never called anybody out on small mistakes, in fact, I made it very clear in previous posts that nobody here will jump down anyones throat over small spelling mistakes, just for not being able to get thier message across because of horrible grammar. I have never once, to anyone new or old, called anyone out on a spelling mistake in my time here, even when people use l33tspeak or anything, because that is not my main concern out of all of this, which would be low content posts. Not once. Were you able to read what I wrote effectively? Obviously you did, because you replied to it. Don't try to paint a false picture of me as a hypocrite.

I never said to put people on probation for misspelling words. Not once.

As far as language goes, I don't care what language you speak, as long as I can read what you're saying. It isn't nit-picking, this is a text based forum, and that is the medium we have, one of letters and grammar and sentences, all that good stuff. If you can't put them together somewhat effectively, why would you choose this medium to express yourself?

Not sure if anybody else has noticed, but there has been another influx of new users posting misspelled, insubstantial, contentious and repeated threads.

At the risk of sounding like a grouchy old person, shouldn't the admins/mods impose some kind of rule for new users?Achieving a certain post-count [80 would provide ample experience, I think] before being granted the privilege to start threads?
Of course, there are exceptions, but I'm sure they would understand.

I'm aware that my threads aren't exactly full of flowering prose or concise points, but nevertheless, it's sad to see the standards of this nice community being lowered like this.

Opinions?
Remember yall, 4chan is the source of all trolling lols o_o

A 50 post minimum sounds fine. It allows us newbies to get used to the forums (provided that they haven't been reading threads without an account for months, as I have) and learn what's acceptable (praising Valve) and what's not (praising the Wii). (I kid, I make joke. I know not everyone agrees with that)

That said, I still can't see myself creating a new thread even after 100 posts. I'd probably still be too scared I'd screw something up.

Then I must ask what the hell you were talking about with this:

We have deliberately set ourselves apart from other forums by openly being a tad more strict in what we percieve as good content and by enforcing at least halfway decent spelling. You say that I maybe can't handle what the site is becoming, maybe I could just as well say it doesn't belong the way that it is, and something should be done.
Key words "enforcing spelling."

Low content posts are unrelated to language proficiency (or lack thereof). Posts that are literally incomprehensible due to muddying of the language are very rare and are typically classified as spam. I don't see what else you could've been trying to suggest.

How can you be misquoting me when the box with my quote in it is right in front of you? My exact words, from up above, as you can see: "enforcing at least halfway decent spelling". You omitted that part. So you're not gonna take back what you said that was wrong, trying to pin me as a spelling demon. Classy. Also, when did I say that low content posts are related to language proficiency? Where? I clearly stated them as two seperate issues, one that irked me moreso than the other.

Add to that, you haven't seen any posts with terrible grammar, that makes it very hard to read? I know we've been here for different amounts of time, but I've seen far too many in my tenure.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. That would make the problem infinitely worse. Imagine all the trolls trying to meet that quota as quickly as possible.

One of the things I love about this place is that we're fairly friendly to new users (long as they don't post dumb stuff). A post count requirement would conspire to change that.

The "halfway decent" qualifier doesn't make it any less stupid. Enforcing spelling at all is the stupid part. What's "halfway decent?" Is it okay if I spell "damn it" with two Ms and no space? Okay, then what about if I spell 2 out of 15 words wrong? Helll, wat iff I speel almos EVRY werd wrogn? If the point still gets across, it's acceptable. Period.
Posts are either comprehensible or incomprehensible, and incomprehensible posts are spam. There isn't some line between the two where you must spell "THIS well" to not be infracted.

And you didn't claim they were related, but you suggested that you didn't care about spelling and that low content posts were the main issue, which would mean that bad spelling was somehow related to it.

No. Not on this site, at least. The only time I've ever seen it happen is with non-English speakers, and then it usually just takes a little thought to discern the meaning. Care to direct me to one of these ones you've seen far too many of?

As a longtime lurker, but only recent member, I know I give an informed opinion on this matter. THis place, as so boldly suggested by the thread head, is going to the dogs. I know this because I myself have been feeding it to dogs. Dogs love the tasty robust flavor of the Escapist. THey ask for it by name. "Rrrrrescapist!"

I somehow doubt the average troll has the patience for that kind of thing, when the whole internet is rich-pickins' anyway.

Edit: I just saw that this thread got trolled by somebody with 600+ posts...Hm.
