Go look at the comment sections for each of those reviews- every one Ive seen has people whining that the reviewer didnt lavish unblemished praise on the game, and had the temerity to point out that the game has flaws.
Oh OK, you mean those "fanboys" I was thinking you found reviews that said it sucked and were rubbing those in people faces

and here I clicked the thread, hoping to see some fanboys whine and baw and jerk into the forums that I could make fun of.

Am I the only one who's disappointed when there's common sense to be found on the internet? :C

I guess some people have a hard time accepting the opinion of someone else and their judgement of a game. Some are harsher some are forgiving. It's how long lasting but buggy games like Fallout New Vegas can still get high scores because they offer a large amount of gameplay, which in a more forgiving reviewer's eyes can deem it worthy of a high score.

Becuase people have no idea what those numbers even mean. What is the quantifiable difference in any game that makes it .5 better than another? There is no answers, becuase the numbers given to games are made up. So people think those made up numbers should be higher for games they like.

OT: Because personal feelings obviously shout down professional opinions.
Or in other words, what the guys above me stated. I just added a video to my point.

I only really care if the rating was cleary unfair/biased/etc.

You could give my favorite game a -99/10, and as long as you actually have legimate reasons, or even just admit you hated it, and you don't know why, then that's fine.

I think a bigger issue is that our rating scale is skewed. A 5/10 should be average, "meh" in every way. 6 should be good, 7 should be great, 8 should be amazing, 9 should be near perfect/super awesome, and 10 should never be used objectivly, only when somthing is objectivly at least a 9, but is subjectivly unthinkable good.

It comes down to having your massively-overhyped opinions validated by a "professional" source.

I get pissed off when reviewers lavish praise on a shitty game, because then if I trust them I'm out a fair chunk of cash. Don't really care if games I love get bad reviews, except it is really annoying when people cite a bad review as some kind of "proof" that a game is bad.

Gamespot gave it a 9.0 and Metacritic have it at 96.

OP: Besides, the f**k should I care about what either some reviewer thinks or what some bored troll fanboy thinks. I like Bethesda games, for example, and maybe have some bias, but I will accept the flaws, and that's MY opinion. I'm savvy enough to ignore what anyone else thinks and go by what I think of it.

For example, I think Modern Warfare 3 is a pile of horse crap that is an excuse to squeeze more money out of CoD fanboys, is shamelessly and obviously just a reboot of the second one and Infinity Ward should be ashamed at what they call a "game".

Stop caring about what other people think, and form your own opinion without feeding trolls.

A large number of review websites are paid by the AAA companies to give good reviews of games that are completely shit. One Gamespot reviewer (Can't remember his name) actually got fired for a damning review of a game when the company paid Gamespot to review it favourably.

So far so good...

When a critic gives their opinion, it's just that, a personal opinion.
Back up. One thing is gaming journalism, other thing is being a critic.

Crosshaw gives his opinion, per example. When I used to buy gaming magazines, what was there was written by professional journalists and their opinions were printed on columns, not on reviews.

I was complaining about this just the other day. The utter outrage when rabid fanboys find out their sole reason for living has scored an 8/10...when did it get like this? Where did the sense go? An eight's pretty damn good -- a nine must be 'near perfect' and a ten 'perfectly perfect', so what the fuck is wrong with an eight? Jay-zus, I hate those whiny bastards. As if a number from a stranger you're never going to meet* is going to affect, you know, YOU LIKING THE GAME.

*(Unless, of course, they track down that reviewer like a psychopath and creep into their room at night with a knife, because I really don't doubt the batshit capabilities of these guys at all.)

All this outrage over MW3 and the new Uncharted game seems silly to me. It would be like shouting at a person who said that a band you love isn't the best band ever.
Because there's this notion floating around that game reviews AREN'T someone's subjective opinion and that the games they like are objectively deserving of 9/10s.

because we can accept that everyone is different apart from when it relates to something we are passionate about, then "I AM RIGHT!"

Or because fanboys are fanboys!

Because ratings aren't what they should be.

This is what ratings should be.

3. Awful+/Bad-
4. Bad
5. Bad+/Meh-
6. Meh
7. Meh+/Good-
8. Good
9. Good+/Fantastic-
10. Fantastic

This is what ratings currently are.

1. Dogshit
2. Dogshit
3. Dogshit
4. Dogshit
5. Dogshit
6. Dogshit
7. Bad
8. Meh
9. Good
10. GAME OF THE YEAR OHMYGOD

This is what the internet thinks game ratings mean.

1. Total shit preorder cancelled.
2. Total shit preorder cancelled.
3. Total shit preorder cancelled.
4. Total shit preorder cancelled.
5. Total shit preorder cancelled.
6. Total shit preorder cancelled.
7. Total shit preorder cancelled.
8. Total shit preorder cancelled.
9. Paid Reviewer
10. Personal Favorite game.
Well shit. After reading this I had to think for 5 mins what I could possibly say.

OT: Maybe it's all fueled by the fear of disappointment? They don't want to admit that the game they held all this love for might actually be less than they expect. I will admit, I felt a little saddened that Uncharted 3 didn't get a perfect score on X-Play, but if anything it shows just how high the standard for a perfect 5 is.

I agree with Yahtzee's view on numerical ratings: something as complex as a human emotion can't be summed up with a number.

Woah boy looks like I just caught a big one! I was referring to people much like yourself who seem ot of taken leave of their senses, pissing and whining that reviewers had the professionalism temerity to mention that the game has its flaws.
"A little bias"? Im not sure if that tiny measure of self awareness should be lauded for doing the impossible or laughed at for its myopia.
And hate to break it to you bub- getting others people's thoughts and opinions (that is to say "discussion") is kinda what the Escapist is all about, if you cant hack that may I reccommend leaving for GameTrailers or GameFAQ's- you'll find a large number of compatriots.

I never said anything about reviewers and how I don't like them poking holes in games. I simply don't let another person's view cloud my inital opinion of it (Particularly as they are played on console normally for reviews and I'm PC exclusive).

I know what the Escapist is about. I have asked for people's opinions on things as well, but there's a difference between asking for someone's opinion of a game, and asking for their opinion of something that might matter a lot to me, a dilemma or problem or even an event. Stop assuming that i'm just another ignorant troll and take time to read over what I had originally said.

You're also being very hypocritical by criticising my temerity to express a truthful opinion.
