Today, I decided to continue playing DA:I. However, apparently a game that was playing just fine a month ago needed to be updated, even if I don't do multi-player, nor have purchased any dlc for the title. The same went for Saint's Row 4 and Diablo 3. And, having a laptop that also demands to be updated every freakin' week makes me wonder why this happens, Why So Often, and how much it hinders others' entertainment or work. Also, do you think it would be practical to have game updates be optional if they aren't for bug or glitches?

I dislike all of that kind of thing. That's why I spend a hundred times more time with console games.

That's part of the reason why I don't buy games which requires online activation.
Since about 2005 I've seen a gradual shift in control from gamers to distributors.
You no longer have control over your games.

Wait, what? Aren't consoles the ones which will lock you out of playing until you update?

PCs have that problem with some platforms (Steam, Origin), but you still have the option of not playing a game through a platform (or using a different platform, but for example GOG went for a weird solution where it requires you to download and install an update, but then gives you an option to "roll back"). It's up to you which version you play, unless the game itself is update-locked. And then you end up with the same problem as on consoles.

Unless you mean operating system updates, driver updates and all that jazz, then I agree that consoles are a little bit better on that front.

That is why I have my console plugged in with an ethernet cord instead of on my wifi. If I want to just play a game and bugger all updates, I'll just unplug it.

For computers though, automatic updates really piss me off. I was the type of person who would always update whenever I saw that little balloon pop up, but I could always do it on my terms.
Nowadays if I have a couple seconds to do something important, it is always a roll of the dice to see if my computer will force me to start a twenty minute update if all I wanted to was check my bank account before I have to leave for work.

Are you this isn't the case with consoles? Cause pretty much I turn one of my consoles on either the game or the system needs an update.

OT: I agree it's one of the worst things about these last couple of generations, plus it's fostered a 'ship it now, patch it later' attitude from publishers that I just can't stand.

At least the PS4 does a lot of it in the background I guess? *shrug*
