Its actually not that thin spread, and I didn't really get a Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed vibe. Guns are big weapons, since its modern day, and it does have horror and RPG elements, so the others are pretty valid. I haven't played, and won't until I'm done with WoW for a bit, but it looks interesting.
More of an observation on design choices the characters and backgrounds. The Assassin's Creed comes from the figures in robes reminisant of Ezio and his baby Assassin's from Brotherhood. From M<ass Effect the scene in space with the character looking out onto the sun similer to the illusive man and the planet his station orbits plus some of the monster designs have a reaper look to them.
I have to admit, I hadn't seen the trailer in question when I summarized the game, so I do apologize for missing those scenes. I was trying to basically paint a picture of the game as a whole. Guess I overlooked it.
I think though the design has a point to make. I hate for the X-files to be my only go to point, but it really hits home on whats being attempted here. The good X-files was made up of variety and monster-of-the-week story telling. The Secret world is going to try and show off some of these things as a "first contact" sort of experience.
Go into room. "Ah, mummies are real?" Do secret agent mummy stuff.
Go into next mission's room. "Ah! Aliens are real?" (actually don't know how much scifi is focused on, but I assumed some.) Get phaser and do these missions.
They may cover a lot of ground, but I think it still hits a pretty niche group. Its not a scifi and zombie survival and old Templar sort of RPG. Its a normal person seeing how many things have been kept under wraps from them RPG, which the title alludes to very well.
Seeing an alien in X-files didn't detract from a werewolf episode next week, as the focus of the franchise was still clear. Two regular people who's job thrust them into contact with the unknown. I'm BETTING (not certain) they won't want to stray too far from that.
EDIT: I did notice the Ezio thing you mentioned and forgot to comment. That's actually the style for one of the three factions. The reference I made to a "holier than thou" speech, was directed at them, the Templar. Since they are a faction, and a very old school one, their design influences the game a little more than the other parts, like an Egyptian or graveyard motif would. It kind of sticks around. That scene, followed by the green lanterns, and then the purple suits are the three groups, if you ever rewatch it.
