Don't know if anyone has seen:

The Descent: Pretty awesome movie with some cave explorers coming across a strange brutal and primitive species picking them off one by one.

Dog Soldiers: Is another one, action packed, fast paced and full of werewolf action.

Speed Racer: Everyone seems to hate it except weirdos like me, actually I think they just haven't watched it. It's so awesome, it's like a cartoon in live-action. It's just really fun and trippy.

I love me some films and if you do, recommend some, but not just any, recommend any you've seen that particularly impressed you but you doubt many have seen them. Its a shame that so many good films go under the radar but yet films like the Green Lantern get such exposure (marketing....). Here is my list of little films you should probably check out.

Grave Encounters: Camera Diary sort of flick, horror and set in a haunted and abandoned mental asylum. Pretty creepy if you like horror.

Ironclad: Medieval old english movie, lots of gory action but a very good plot.

Battle Royale: Probably the least unknown movie of the three, but if you haven't seen it and you like chaos, action, gore that sorta thing, then watch it.
I like Ironclad so I shall recommend it as well. The only drawback is that I now get ripped for watching it, I'm usually met with the response "IRONCLAD!" whenever I say a film my brother likes is shit.

Watched the movie after reading the book... the book was soooooo much better, the movie looks like incoherent mess in comparison.

Was ok for a B-movie, nothing too great.

"Wes Craven Presents: They": Not sure how many people saw this one, but from the impression I get from people I talked to about this movie, not many. If you're a horror fan, check out this movie, it plays on so many different fears people have. Saw it when I was about 16 and it kept me up all paranoid for a night.

"Galaxy Quest": A hilarious parody on sci-fi movies like Star Trek.

"Heathers"(1988): Don't even know how to describe it, a dark comedy I guess about high school, life, death and popularity.

"The invention of lying": A comedy set in a world where lying doesn't exist and everybody is brutally honest, one guy invents lying and turns the world around.

"Idle Hands": A comedy/horror - a guy's hand becomes possesed by evil forces and goes on a rampage to kill the people he loves.

If anyone likes musicals, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" is a phenomenal one. I haven't seen many "hidden gems," but I will definitely look into the ones listed here.

Got to go with Strings. It's done with marionettes but the fact they are all puppets is very important to their religious beliefs and world. It's much better than I can make it sound.

I just recently saw a movie called Hunter Prey that was alright. Low budget sci-fi movie shot in Mexico on a RED camera.

The aliens look kinda cool, have little details that I found interesting, and they aren't CG for a change. The alien gear looks cool and have a good amount of detail.

Probably won't blow anyone's mind, but it was entertaining enough that I'll end up adding it to my movie collection.

edit: The Jesse Stone movies are pretty good too if you like slower cop movies. Tom Selleck is awesome in em and good acting all round.

Event Horizon is still one of my favorite horror movies. Lawrence Fishburne and Sam Neill play their roles well. Good effects too.

And I want to say The Thing. It might not be considered a hidden gem, but I know too many people who haven't seen it.

Dark City.

Oh and for the sheer insanity of it I would suggest Rubber. It's about a tire with psychic powers......

For the longest time, I really, really did not like Leonardo diCaprio for the simple fact that he was in Titanic, the Twilight of the 90's. Then I saw Catch Me If You Can, starring Leo and Tom Hanks (and Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen), and I realized that Leo is actually an incredibly good actor. Put him in a movie with Tom Hanks, give Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen each a monologue or two (I'm just a big sucker for a good monologue) and it's golden.

Seeing as someone already said Battle Royale; let's go with Franklyn.

The film is a split narrative set simultaneously in contemporary London and in a future metropolis ruled by religious fervor. It's the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.

*EDIT* The masked vigilante is also the last atheist in Meanwhile City *EDIT*

The parts set in Meanwhile City are just awesome; a whole separate film could have made around that neo-victorian inspired city.

Movie poster

Also just look how awesome the police in Meanwhile city are:

I saw a trailer for this a while back then lost track of it. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.

I just watched 'Contact' like two days ago, based off the novel Sagan wrote. Very good acting, but don't expect too much 'action'. It focusses more on 'this is the greatest discovery of all time!' than 'ALIENS ALL UP IN THIS *****'... which is a nice change.

"Tootsie"

A genuinely funny comedy from the 80s with Dustan Hoffman. I won`t spoil it with any details but if there are any hidden treasures in the world this is one of them.

The 80s rocked.
