I love the ones in Dark Souls.
And they're super extra creepy, too: most mimics are just jumping toothed treasure chests.
The ones in DS have a giant tongue sticking out of their mouths, and a disturbing, elongated body. It's just... wrong.
Also, they can instakill you but that's a given in DS.

The first mimic chest I ever encountered was in the first dungeon in tales of symphonia, now baring in mind this was one of the first jrpgs I had got and
really falling deep into I was not a particularly high level at the time and was simply enjoying the combat and story having a good time, so I find a chest
and with in five seconds this huge fanged chest was now chasing me around the battle field, the worst thing was I had no idea what it was or why it was so strong it
just suddenly i was down in the yellows trying not to get killed, after that i never looked at any chest in that game same way

I'm sure no one forgets their first Dark Souls mimic chest. They even placed it in what is at that point the most frustrating area of the game (Sen's Fortress). You're best bet is to just leave them be, because once they become active they'll kick the shit of you. Unless ofcourse you've got powerful projectiles.

You can even get the mimic chest as head gear. I never tried it on myself due to the description mentioning something along the lines of it holding a curse.

The mimics in Final Fantasy XII are pretty unusual. Rather than wooden chests, the mimics in this game are four-legged insectoid creatures disguised as metallic canisters. The boss of the area they're found in (Barheim Passage) is a queen mimic about ten times the size of a normal one.

Interestingly enough, their metallic appearance and four legs lends them similarities to Omega, one of the series' infamous optional bosses (his incarnation in FF XII is called Omega mark 12), and some of the bestiary entries seem to suggest Omega and the mimics were made by the same creator.
Didn't have too many problems with them after the initial lot. I mean, when you have a really oddly coloured canister in the late game, it gets pretty obvious.

The big threat was the crystal bugs. Dear god did those hand your ass to you first time round. Oh, look, a save crystal to restore my life in this dungeon. I'll just use it and be fine. OH GOD WHY?

They were always placed in the most ideal spot for the save point and tore your weakened party to pieces with powerful magic. Just a dick move really

I've had many a nethack run end due to mimics :/ At least the Dark Souls ones actually move while sitting there, the lid rocks up and down very slowly.
You finish eating the small mimic corpse.
You can't resist the temptation to mimic an orange.

So much fun with those things. Especially in shops where the chests stand out like sore thumbs...

Yeah I wasn't a big fan of those at all. I don't know what you were really meant to do about it or what sort of gameplay it was meant to encourage. They didn't happen that often and I never noticed anything that made them look different from a normal crystal. Just a way to occasionally finish you off when you think you're going to make it

In Dark souls, I just attacked every chest I saw, before I even know about the mimics....
Same here, still forgot and got grabbed by one in the archives at one point. Took me a while to realize that the chain on their chests is straight, whereas the regular chests have a somewhat curved chain on the side.

This is not exactly a mimic chest but it was in the first Condemned, a game in which you were forced to search each nook and cranny for medkits and weapons, a locker was sort of a godsend because it always contained something that would help you survive. Well this one time, I opened a locker and a lunatic jumped out and started attacking me.

My favourite is actually not from a game at all, but The Luggage from the Discworld books. Ok, it probably doesn't count but it's the deadliest travel accessory in existence! In gaming I've only ever encountered them in Final Fantasy games, for FFIX would be my nomination.

My first playthrough of Final Fantasy IX. I was almost through the ruins of the Burmecian capitol, and had already encountered more than enough of the damn things to know that the place had a SERIOUS Mimic problem. I was literally just one step from the exit to the next area and wanted nothing more that to forever turn my back on that Mimic- (and random encounter-) infested dump... but there was just one more chest. At the end of a narrow walkway. Just a few paces away.

I couldn't do it. I couldn't leave that chest alone. (Hey, there could be MONEY in there!) So I went those few extra steps. And guess what: I ran into a random encounter EVERY SINGLE STEP of the way over to that chest. I must have hit almost as many random encounters on that walkway as I had on my way through the ENTIRE rest of the area. By the time I finally made it to that chest, I was clean out of magic and down to my last handful of healing potions.

As for what happened when I opened the chest... Do I even need to say it?

Also have to mention Dragon Quest VIII. I was on my way to Trodain Castle, almost clean out of magic and healing items, and spotted two things in the distance. One of them was a chest. The other was a Mimic. The Mimic was one of those monsters you can capture for use in that Monster Arena sidequest, so it was happily blowing its cover by dancing merrily around near the chest. Well, I could certainly sneak up to the chest without picking a fight with the Mimic. I thought. I was wrong. However, I did manage to defeat the creature, though it cost me my last healing potion and most of the party's health.

And now, the funny part. The other chest? Yup, THAT was a Mimic TOO!

Fun fact about the mimic chests in Dark Souls: If you throw a Lloyd's Talisman at them they become completely docile and you can take their loot without fighting them.

My favorite was FFXIIs save point mimics, you have to love the giant middle finger.

I don't understand people not liking the Torchlight 2 ones, they are weaker than the enemies you killed to reach them. Just more gold and loot with a touch of exp.

Ah yes, the Mimics. Those things can be a royal pain. Esp. since they're usually not easy to kill. I remember there was this one time, I forget what game it was, might have been Tales of Symphonia, but I walked into this dungeon and right near the entrance was this dead end with a Nimic in it that kicked my ass. Hated that thing.

The iphone game, Tiny Heroes. You're suppose to prevent heroes from stealing you treasure so you put down all kinds of traps, one of them can be a Mimic. Think there is a achievement related to that aswell.
It's a free game, so check it out if you like.

Ah Mimics. A Delver's worst nightmare and a DM's Schadenfreude Coup de grace. Always fun for a laugh, especially if said delvers just finished up a rough battle as it was looking to claim the rewards after.

My first experience was in Golden sun, had me confused at first as it was the first time I had even heard of anything like it. Kicked it's ass though. Stupid mimic.
