Okay I just feel like I need to get out some of my feelings about the continued existence of these games. Be warned, this is mostly just going to be something resembling a rant.

First off, I just want to make it clear: I love these games. I might not always agree with Ubisoft's choices about what to put in them, but I always love them. I get hooked on every single one, and they can eat up my time like no other game series I've ever experienced.

Now onto my issues with them:

Issue number 1: the main characters. I'll put this out there in no mixed terms - I fucking loved Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. I think he was fucking amazing, and it's a shame he wasn't given the same extensive weapons and abilites as Ezio was. I get that Ubisoft learnt as they went, and they had to somewhat obey the technology levels of the time periods in terms of weapons, but I find it hard to swallow that someone who was trained from birth to be an elite member of the Assassin brotherhood would be less capable in combat and slower with his free-running than some Italian womaniser who happens to be able to do parkour.

Now that's out of the way, let's move on to Ezio Auditore da Firenze. I liked him, at first. I still do, kind of. He's a good character, he really is. There's not much else too say about him really. He's just a good character to have.

The issue? We've spent too much time with him. Having a new Assassin from Altaïr for Assassin's Creed 2 was a good move, and I approve. I approve of the setting too, cause I love the renaissance styling and everything. But now we've had 2 games with Ezio, and a third one coming, I just feel he needs to bow out. He's done, as far as I'm concerned. His story is over, and them bringing him back for Assassin's Creed: Revelations is just trying to milk the last out of a good character. Yes, he was good, but he's 53 years old now, you can't have him travelling the world and still being as agile as ever. Hell, part of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was the fact that there's many more Assassins now because of Ezio. We really don't need him as a playable character in Revelations.

This feeds into another issue I have with Altaïr. He should have had more than one game. I know he's controllable in sections of Revelations, but I just feel like we should have made more time with him. Maybe seeing how he carries on after the whole messy business at the end of the 1st game.

But instead we get glimpses of that, but never get to actually follow it properly for ourselves, which I think it a missed opportunity. What, did the Templars just stop after Al Mualim kicked the bucket? They're still active in the year 2012 or whenever Desmond's sections are supposed to be set, so what did they do after Al Mualim died, and how did Altaïr get himself involved in that? It's a big chunk of what could be an amazing story that we never really find out much about. I remain hopeful that we get to play that in Revelations.

Speaking of Desmond... he's the one character I don't like. He's just... bland. He's got the abilities of his ancestors but none of the personality. Altaïr was a guy bound by duty and his brotherhood but was forced to go against them to stop the Templars. Ezio became an Assassin to avenge his unjustly murdered family and followed that through into a quest against the Borgia. Desmond on the other hand? He does nothing but sit in a machine, yet they want us to play as him every now and again for seemingly no real reason.

My next real complaint is the whole 'aliens making humans' thing revealed at the end of Assassin's Creed 2. It's interesting, yes. But by shortly after the beginning of Brotherhood it seems to be forgotten, and everyone goes right back to "kill Templars and find pieces of Eden" mode with narry a mention of the futuristic shit hidden under the fucking Vatican!

This last bit is a bit iffy cause I still haven't finished Brotherhood, but the rest still stands.

TL;DR: We should have had more time with Altaïr and Ezio is wearing thin now. Also Desmond is boring.

Sorry if all this has been said before but I really needed to vent. Ignore if you want, or discuss what I've said. The choice is yours.

I...really can't argue with anything you've said. I agree completely.

That critical miss comic said it perfectly, when your series allows you to set your game in any time period in history, why restrict yourself with the same period over multiple games?

I'd love to see a world war era assassins creed, like the saboteur but good.

EDIT: Found the critical miss comic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/8342-Critical-Miss-Different-Creeds]

I'm pretty sure that no-one likes Desmond.
Ezio and Altair are both awesome in their own right; whichever one is better is a hotly argued debate.

I just get the feeling that Revelations is taking the path it's taking because people already like Ezio and Altair, and this game includes both, instead of the harder task of making AC3 which will require a brand new character in a brand new era and getting people interested in him/her.

Personally, I'd like a Victorian London AC.

Here's a thought: Why does Assassin's Creed NEED Desmond? Or in fact the Animus gimmick at all?

Everyone seems to agree that the future-bits are the worst part in each game; why not cut them out entirely and actually let it stand alone as a historic role-playing sort of game???

Agree with both of these things.

I'm of the mind that Revelations doesn't need to exist, it's just being used a way to milk the last drops of character development out of Ezio, while giving fans Altaïr back for a while.

And yeah, before Brotherhood was announced I was pushing for a Victorian London-based Assassin. Then pushed for the same before I saw what Revelations was going to be about.

i still hope that we are not playing as desmond reliving memories through the Animus but as someone from the far future reliving desmond reliving memories though the Animus.

I agree with pretty much everything there, although I'm intrigued by the possibilities opened up by having an old Ezio(Yes Im thinking old snake style) and how they'll tie it in to the story.

As for the time period thing, I dont think it should go very much further in to the future. guns would feel a bit out of place, and its hard to argue that trained marksmen couldnt take down an assassin with some sort of advanced firearm (well, more advanced than what weve seen already anyway). And It would take away from the melee combat, which for me is a key part of the games, cause really, who wouldnt just shoot the guy if they had a gun?

So far i think it's one of the better stories in modern gaming and if the franchise is going in the direction i suspect they may after beating brotherhood than i think it's only going to get better.

You might want to finish brotherhood before you say the whole alien thing is forgotten. Just putting that out there.

I for one really enjoyed Desmond. I like his character. I really love Ac though. It's my favourite series and I've already got the uber edition of AC:R ready.

I was always of the opinion that this series would be best served by visiting and different area and time period[footnote]Excluding modern-ish eras, of course. Developed firearms would feel out of place in an AC game, and make assassins mostly obsolete.[/footnote] with each game, but apparently Ubisoft disagrees. Still, at least the architecture and culture in Revelations should be refreshingly different.

I agree with you Angel.

I'm on the fence with Revelations. On one hand I would like to see progression and on the other I would like to play some more of Altair and we've been with Ezio since he was born, would like to see how his story ends. Desmond is bland but hopefully Revelations will have some character developmen for him so he can be less bland when ACIII comes out. As for the setting for AC III: I wouldn't mind mid 1800's New York ala Gangs of New York. Victorian London would be epic as well.

One word on that front:

Okay that's a stupid suggestion, but it would be kinda awesome. Seriously though, the whole melee combat thing is going to be a problem if this franchise continues. They're running out of time periods where swords were still heavily favoured over guns. Hell even some of the rooftop guards in Brotherhood use guns.

Anyway, I think the series has been done a liiiittttlllleeee too much, they need to move on. Getting back to Altair or maybe switching to a new assassin would be highly appriciated.

There was another game with Altair, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines for the PSP. Storyline wise it was definitely a side story though, nothing dealing with Desmond.

I do agree that it is time for a proper Assassin's Creed 3 with a new protagonist, but from what we've been teased with so far the upcoming Revelations may actually put Ezio's story to an end, while at the same time resolving Altair's story. I have hopes it will be good since they've yet to let me down. AC1 < Bloodlines < AC2 < Brotherhood.

I think I agree on everything you say, I just wish they don't make Ass creed the new CoD with 14 multiplayer games. I liked the multiplayer in Ass creed brotherhood so I don't want them to make a new one because they can make money out of it.

Was that really necessary?

I agree with some of the stuff the OP said but I don't feel like Revelations shouldn't include Ezio, he's just more fleshed out plus I love the Renaissance setting far more than AC1's setting.

I don't think the reason we dislike Ezio was because he's now being whored by ubisoft - though that's part of it. I think it's because he's gotten old, literally. I hated him in AC:B, because he wasn't like ezio anymore, he was just some brooding guy who talked to himself when a ladder fell down or he got a new item and made us feel awkward. When I played AC2 again, I loved ezio again, because he was interesting, and young, and actually made me give a crap about him. So I'm worried how Ezio is gonna be in revelations, though i have more hope for it than brotherhood, maybe because they actually changed the location and the location isn't 50% hills to be horse ridden about.

With regards to Desmond, yes he's very bland, yes no-one really likes him, but he's necessary. As ZP said, he's a device to drive the storyline. And maybe his time in the animus will make him less crap, along with what happened at the end of brotherhood. Maybe. But I don't want it removed. AC2 is 1 of my favourite games, and one of the main reasons is the conspiracy, with the 20 glyphs and subject's 16s message and the templar-assassin war involving famous people throughout history. Which probably added to my anger towards AC:B middle finger at this. While the series does need to go to a new assassin for some obligatory reason, at least revelations has a different location.

In regards to Altair, he's a generic assassin really, I didn't care about him at all. He didn't really have story development, nor a personality, just what one would expect your everyday assassin to be like.

also, just FYI, brotherhood and revelations weren't intended by the creator of AC. IIRC, he/she was very upset by ubisoft's cashcow milking with brotherhood, and brotherhood was supposed to be the end of ezio's story, quote here from the associate producer of AC:

"I don't think there's going to be an Assassin's Creed in 2011. I think we're going to let it breathe a bit and really focus on bringing something new and exciting for the next time around. This [Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood] is the end of Ezio's story. This is it."

So don't get your hopes too high about a new story after this, as much as we want one.
/end rant that i lost the point of somewhere in the middle

I agree with almost everything you said.

Although I've never been a huge fan. The Assissin's Creed games strike me as having a lot of potential, but it always gets covered over by bad design decisions.

Also, please no more Altair. The guy has no personality at all. Seriously, just try to list his defining characteristics.
