I have never had the chance to play Ys before until recently. I have heard the name of the game series many times the past few years. But circumstances prevented me from playing the games until I picked up Ys Origin and Ys The Oath in Felghana from Steam.

So I started with Ys Origin, which seemed the most logical choice considering the time line. The game had awesome music, nice artwork, interesting characters, smooth gameplay and challenging bosses. On top of that you had 3 playable characters. Each of them had their own style and storyline and each one highlighted a different aspect of the world and the grand story. So you really needed to play all 3 characters to fully understand what's going on. Although I have to admit the main story is pretty straight forward and unoriginal. It still does a good job of creating an interesting world. Overall I was pleasantly surprised with Ys Origin and quickly went on to the next game.

Ys The Oath in Felghana turned out to be a huge disappointed. It still had the same gameplay and it still had awesome music. But that's about it. Ys The Oath in Felghana is a mere shadow of Ys Origin. It doesn't have any artwork, it only has 1 playable character, the boss fights are more annoying and less interesting and the characters and the game world are boring.

Now I have mixed feelings about the Ys Series. The last Ys game I can play at the moment is Ys The Ark of Napishtim. Not sure how good the game is going to be compared to the other two Ys games.

Any thoughts on the Ys series? Which Ys game is your favorite?

I've only played Oath and I enjoyed it but I haven't finished it because towards the end it started getting kinda grindy. I've been meaning to beat it sometime and try Origin, but I was actually worried that Origin would just be more of the same. I guess that isn't the case?

I played a demo of one of them for the PC (Origin, I believe). Thought it was pretty decent. Art and music was nice, but the controls were a mixed bag. Good for fighting, terrible for platforming (which the game appeared to have a lot of). Can't say much for the story, seeing as it was a demo and all, and I only played it for 15 minutes. :p

Oath in Felghana is a re-make of Ys 3, hence why it's a little less grand in scope. It expanded greatly on the original, but it still had to follow that game's lead, so you only get 1 character.

Plus OiF came out before Origin, so it's understandable the latter will be a little beefier.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. The Ys Series is one of my favourites, and these 2 are amazing games. Ys has always had amazing music as well, and Origin is probably top of the ladder for that now.

Well, it is more of the same... same graphics, same gameplay, same feeling. BUT Origin is a lot better nonetheless. If you like The Oath in Felghana then you'll definitely like Origin.

Obviously you shouldn't have started with Origins then. With a title like that you can tell it's a prequel that was made after the original was so it's going to have improvements over Felgahana which is a remake of an earlier game. You wouldn't start Star Wars with episode I-III right (at least you shouldn't).

Personally I haven't played the games, though I'm tempted to buy them every time they come on sale on Steam. On the one hand, they're one of the few JRPGs on PC and on Steam on top of that, but it seems like they're more action than RPG.

I have never heard of these games before, I may check them out as im a sucker for good music in games, plus I like the name.

Any one you recommend on starting or should I just go with Origin as that sounds good?

I didn't know Origin was made after the other games. And because it's using the same graphic engine, it is difficult to tell which one is older at first sight.

It doesn't have many RPG elements. It's mostly action & platformer. But I think it is still worth it for JRPG fans, especially on a $5 Steam sale.

Origin is the first game of the Ys series when you look at the time line, but the game has been created after The Oath in Felghana.

I would probably start at Origin, as it is the best example of Ys. If you like Origin and you want more, you can check out the other Ys games. Although I am not sure which are the best. I have only played 2 and read about The Ark of Napishtim.
