So, if you won the lottery and could fund a sequel to any game, or resurrect a franchise/series, which three would you go for? Also, which three franchises would you retire and lock away forever?
Resurrect:
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series - The original took a lot of effort to appreciate fully but I was lucky to have three friends with GBAs willing to play through it. The graphics (for the time) were incredibly beautiful, and the soundtrack is still one of my all-time favourites. The series died a death after Crystal Bearers flopped (a game I personally really liked despite its flaws) and I can't see SquareEnix revisiting it anytime soon given their financial issues and how risky the CC games would be, so this is my first choice. Add in online multiplayer and the option to use 3DSs for controller in local play and this would be perfect.
Excite Trucks - Nintendo may not be known for racing games but they have loads of long-dormant franchises just begging to be brought back. Wave Race, Excite Bike, F-Zero, 1080, Diddy Kong Racing etc. may be more popular picks, but my personal fave was Excite Trucks. The stunts, sense of speed, and grading just combined to create a perfect, addictive racer. With more online features and full HD, this would be my ideal racer.
La Pucelle Tactics - Disgaea may have got more attention, but as much as I enjoyed that series La Pucelle has always been my favourite Nippon Ichi strategy RPG. The story was gripping and very emotional, and I'd love to see the characters given a second outing. I felt the battle system had more depth than Disgaea or FF Tactics, and the monster capturing/training was more satisfying.
Almost made the cut: ISS, Wario Land, Baten Kaitos
Bury:
Metal Gear Solid - I've tried so many times to get into Metal Gear, but, aside from the excellent Game Boy Color one, it's never clicked. I don't know why, but I find the series boring as hell. I like playing games, not watching overblown, silly cutscenes for an hour at a time, sandwiching ten minutes of actual gameplay.
Kirby - I love the pink puffball, I really do, but his games have been underwhelming since Kirby Superstar. They're all so easy, boring and safe. There's no innovation going on at all in them, and the only reason Nintendo keep plugging away with his games is to justify his inclusion in Smash Bros. The same thing can be said of Yoshi - the SNES game was absolutely genius, but the sequels weren't fit to lick the shiny red boots of the original.
Call of Duty - Enough already. Activision's policy of yearly releases has killed my excitement for it, just like Tony Hawks and Guitar Hero before it. There's been no great leap in innovation since the first Modern Warfare, Zombie mode is the only reason I picked up Black Ops, and I still haven't even tried the campaign mode yet. I played Ghosts at a friends house and found it incredibly generic, uninteresting rubbish. None of my clan mates are bothering with Advanced Warfare.
Almost made the cut: 'New' Mario Bros series, 3-d Sonic games, Fable
