I personally don't like ties, but...what the fuck is wrong with that girl?
I'm pretty sure it's still not standard procedure to begin addressing people with "Hey Fucktard."
If it was, I'd be in fits of laughter all day, but since it isn't...what the hell?
Either daddy issues or they are chavs who will just get pregnant and live on benefits xD

Ties are classy, that girl has either no fashion sense or was, as you specified, a complete idiot. I relish every opportunity I get to smack on a tie and suit and be classy. Don't worry what people say, if your lucky, it'll catch on and everyone will ware them. I say keep wearing yours, cos ties are cool, and you can be as well.

Ties were part of my school uniform (I say were not cause they aren't anymore, cause I dont go there anymore), so naturally its not weird at all for me to see people as young as 11 wearing ties as school uniform. Its just cause your peers are'nt used to it, they have those very warped opinions of them.

It'd be the equivalent of someone in my old school coming in wearing a tux. People would stare and ask "Why the tux?" but they probably wouldnt be called gay, more likely complimented (Im not saying being called gay is an insult but the way you're "friend" called you that, sounds like it was meant as an insult).

I'm currently training to be an English teacher and wearing ties is a fucking tragedy. I agree with looking smart and I love shirts, nice shoes, blazers, waistcoats, all that stuff, but I cannot stand ties! I really begrudge having to wear them. A shirt and blazer looks smart enough without a flappy piece of cloth hanging from my fucking throat.

Suits are designed to flatter the male figure as much as possible, without a tie, the suit is not complete.

Nothing suits me like a suit.

I think ties look pretty cool, actually. I'm no fashion expert though, so nobody should be coming to me for advise.

In my school we had to wear ties as part of our uniform, but for some reason most people wore them with a giant knot that made it so the tie didn't go below the bottom of their neck. I thought that looked stupid, so I didn't, and I got called a swot* a couple of times for it. Of course these were the kind of people I explicitly didn't want to approve of me, so I pretty much took it as a complement. By the sounds of things you should do the same.

[sub]*Not sure how common that word is, but it basically means "nerd" or "dork" where I live.[/sub]

I am quite a large guy, but when I wear a nice shirt and tie, I look like one classy ************. To the girl hating on you for for wearing a tie, she can go fuck herself. Ties are the shit. (Sorry for the harsh language).

But in all honesty, where did the trend of wearing a tie come about? Was it some guy just tieing a weird piece of fabric around his neck and letting the haters hate? Seriously, I would like to know.

17th Croatian Mercenaries in the French Court popularised it, hence Cravat, the Croatian word for Croatia being 'Hrava'.

The French thought it was snazzy and it spread from there, slowly ridding us of the ruff, and forming a new dominant fashion in European neckwear. :p

In terms of my personal views, I do enjoy wearing ties these days, having worn one since I was... 7, I think, until I was 18 (i.e. from the first day of primary school to the last day of sixth form). By the end of that time, I was ambivalent, slightly annoyed by it, but I've had a 5 year break from them whilst I was at university, and now I'm rather keen on them again, especially with my newfound control over the pattern of my tie and how it coordinates with my suit jacket and shirt.

Personally I don't wear them just for comfort reasons, I have a very large neck & I normally can't even button the top button on a shirt so thats my reason for not wearing them. But if you dig them, then ignore the haters or tell them to fuck off.

I hate ties, useless piece of wardrobe that does nothing and doesn't even look good(to me), but i wouldn't call someone a f*cktard if he decides to wear one, unless its covered with ponies or something like that.

Ties kick so much ass it is unnatural. I personally love wearing a suit and tie to any formal occasion, since I feel so damn fly in it and the ladies will notice how fly one looks in it. Hell, I even wore a tie to my job, when people told me "You don't need to wear a tie", so I took that as an open invitation to wear one if I wanted to, though. Also, if only "gay sh*ts" wear ties then I guess all of these men(see below) are "gay shits"?

Daniel Craig (aka, James Fucking Bond).

The Governator.

A Special Forces soldier (Green Beret).

And lastly,

Chuck Norris

Something tells me they aren't "gay sh*ts".

Maybe people are overreacting because you're in school, and people don't usually start wearing them until they have a job that requires them.
What kind of crap is this!?

Even in primary school I had to wear a tie! Granted it was just the knot and the bit of the tie you see with elastic for the neck part but it still had to be worn till I left high school!

On topic. I am not a fan of ties but having the Y chromosome = having to wear the blasted thing at every formal event. Ties are too much like a noose to me, not that I have ever worn a noose but I imagine they are a pretty similar thing.

I do want a red tie though, so when I do go to a formal thing I can look like agent 47 ....

Ideally a tie should never be uncomfortable (like a suit shouldn't) by picking the right width, length and method that suits you.
I agree with these fine gents here. Ties arc classy, and very fancy, and who dosen't like to dress fancy now and again? But the must be the right fit otherwise they turn into a very uncomfortable noose like object.

They look retarded on kids in school uniforms. They're shit ties, they're usually shit colours/patterns, and the kids can't do them up or wear them properly.

And yeah, if you're the only two people and you don't need to get a tie, obviously people are going to wonder why.

In wider response to other people's comments, whilst I like suits and ties, I'm also 17, and have almost zero occasion to wear them. From personal experience, seeing people my age try and wear a tie and a proper shirt makes them look ridiculous. Again, because they don't know how to wear them, or because they look cheap and shitty.

I will wear suits a lot when I can afford to have them tailored.

Most people my age look almost as bad as the one on the left when they wear a suit.

I think Ties are awesome, particularly this one:

In all seriousness though, wearing a tie is classy stuff. Anyone that claims otherwise is an uneducated Philistine. I just dislike the process of putting one on because I can never remember how to tie it correctly.

On a related note, I think bowties are long overdue for a comeback. And top hats. And moustaches. Hell, the entire "19th century businessman/snake oil salesman" look needs to return. That shit was classy as hell.

I just really don't like having something tight around my throat.
Clip-ons were made for that very reason... and for people like me that never quite mastered the intricacies of tying a stupid tie (even my USMC ties were clip-on) :p
I would think ties that go with military uniforms might be clip-ons for other reasons. But I guess actual combat uniforms don't bother with things like that.

I hear security guards and police officers are supposed to wear clip-on ties for safety reasons though.
It is a fairly easy thing to grab and strangle someone with after all.

As a school-aged person, I would advise you avoid the "white shirt, black tie, backpack" look that has become synonymous with door to door Mormons.

That said, ain't nothing wrong with a tie, though personally, I think it looks MUCH better with a jacket (see: literally all of the pictures in this thread) If anyone gives you grief, just say something like, "You don't have to be upset cuz I look good."

Also, a few more quick points

- Ties with slacks (no jeans, dockers, khakis, etc) and I'd probably keep it in the Black/Grey/Brown range. Maybe beige.
- Jacket matches the slacks. If you ever decide to don the jacket.
- If you want a little more low-key way to still be stylish, rock the button down or polo shirt sans tie. It's a good look, but a little less obviously dressed up than a full on suit and tie
- Tailoring: Not just for WoW anymore. If you've listened to my other points, and opt for the full suit and tie. Get one that fits properly. Having it tailored and drylceaned will be a bit pricey, but it's worth the extra cost to not look like, well, Woodsley's picture a few posts up.
