I dont forsee them doing alot to be honest. The UN is all about countries gathering and look waht they do. We just have to face that we as humans are destructive creatures, and have pretty much topped the evolutionary chart. There's no more survival of the fittest to put us in our places. We're just letting ourselves over populate the species, kinda like deer.

Its a sad thing to say, but theres just as much good to things like Cholera, AIDS, Smallpox, polio, etc. as there are bad.

But to be on topic, its kinda awesome to see the countries putting together and effort, but it wont stop anyhting. Poachers gonna poach.
Did you just... did you just say deadly diseases were a good thing because they kill humans?
Even if we are destructive by nature, do you realise just how McIhateHumankindBecauseImEmoDouchebag you sound by making that statement? Yes, we as humans make mistakes, but we do alot of beautiful things as well.

OT: Let's hope they keep the species alive, big cats are really quite pretty.

I have a solution to the problem: Kill the people that want tiger penis as some sort of folk remedy and feed them to the tigers!
I don't really see this as a solution. It's merely a punishment.

I don't think we (humans) will let the tigers die out. They're way too popular, and as we know, the world is one big popularity contest i.e. Pandas.

Fuck the Panda. A world with pandas and without tigers is a very sad world.

This is going to have big implications on the ecosystem, and it's humanity's fault that Tigers are dying. Years of pouching and hunting by people are wiping out an entire species, and the saddest things is that they're not the only species in this world that are in danger of being wiped out because of human activity. Dolphins and whales are being hunted for meat despite the high content of mercury in their bodies due to biological magnification, Polar Bears are at risk of extinction due to Climate Change, and Sharks are being killed for their fins, which provide absolutely no benefit to the health of people other than acting as a decoration for some Chinese soup.

Arguably, the world was a much finer place until we came along.

Oh shit.

Why is everything dying?
Because (some.....ummm, most actually) humans are arseholes.

It's tough to survive when a billion people think that your foreskin is some kind of aphrodisiac. Fucking morons :/

And yes, I did just refer to the whole of China as 'fucking morons'!

Meh. It's unfortunate if they die out, but if they can't survive on their own, it's not something we should be overly concerned about. Species go extinct at least on a weekly basis, it's not a big deal. Hell, it's part of evolution/natural selection.
Except it's not,
Tigers would have had no problem surviving if not for us hunting them and stealing their terriroty if sombody shot you it'd be murder not natural selection.

Sorry but humans need to die and in large numbers we are extermly overpopulated as a species if it weren't for factory farming and genetic engineering all but a third of us would starve to death,
And then certain govornments pay people to have more childeren,
This planet is so fucked.

i don't really care that I'll never see a tiger again as I've never seen a real life one anyway, in fact if i go trekking through a jungle i should hope that i don't see a tiger

Why do people even hunt them? They do it because they want a piece of the last treasures the population has to offer, but if they stopped hunting now, the population would grow again, and then we'd have to hunt them as population-control. Also everything they like about the tiger(hides) can be made with technology. Btw, Asians should stop hunting them to make stimulating substances out of them. It doesn't work. And it's stupid. And gross.

Many people in China have a belief that various tiger parts have medicinal properties, including as pain killers and aphrodisiacs. There is no scientific evidence to support these beliefs. The use of tiger parts in pharmaceutical drugs in China is already banned, and the government has made some offenses in connection with tiger poaching punishable by death. Furthermore, all trade in tiger parts is illegal under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and a domestic trade ban has been in place in China since 1993. Still, there are a number of tiger farms in the country specialising in breeding the cats for profit. It is estimated that between 5,000 and 10,000 captive-bred, semi-tame animals live in these farms today.(Wikpedia)

Species go extinct on a daily basis. Over a hundred each day.

seriously why are animal rights activists against zoo's, they don't have to hunt for there food and they've got territory and (usually) a mate, that is all a tiger needs to be comfortable

Why are we gathering to save tigers when there are so much more important things to save first? It just amazes me at how people end up carrying more about another species rather than their own. The moment we manage to fix all of our problems I'm going to be all about spending money and organizing expensive meetings to save animals but as it stands, this is just plain bullshit.

at this point they are a dead species anyway to have even a remotely good gene pool they would need more individuals then just 3600. even if we tried at this point in 10 years they would all be too inbred to stand up.
The human population was once reduced to about a thousand individuals, look at us now.

According to the article, there may be about 3200 tigers left in the wild.
That's an estimate.

And a very bad one.

Not to mention tigers are extremely efficient hunters and a large population of them is unsustainable, and that they're masterful at getting around human eyes, like most other good predators.

So, tell me again how people think there's only 3,200 tigers left in the wild when there's probably more than that in zoos alone?
People don't tend to poach the tigers in zoos.

No it's not. Tigers were surviving just fine for thousands of years before the industrial age came along. I'd have to look up the exact numbers, but humans now have caused extinction at a rate several times greater than what it naturally was during civilized man's early history.

-snipped for great justice-
That's very true.

That said, why should we care? It's a law of nature that things either adapt or die. If they can't adapt, why do we bother even trying to keep them alive? As soon as they're dead, nature will fill the hole, as has happened countless times throughout the last four billion years. Worrying about it is asinine.
+1

Survival of the fittest still count for humans, even though we do so much unnatural things to the nature.

There's a difference between adapting to a gradual change over hundreds of generations and going extinct because your fur looks really awesome, and killing a tiger makes you hardcore.

We should care because as humans we're causing extinction rates far greater than would naturally happen...and what happens when everything else but us on this planet is dead?
We die. I still fail to see how it's a big deal. Everything dies eventually, including the human race. If it's because we nuke ourselves to death or destroy the environment or any of a number of other causes, we, as a species, are going to die eventually. Just like every other species and anything else that has a physical existence. Stressing about it doesn't do anything.

Edit: In addition, if/when we get to that point (and I find it highly unlikely, Nature is a tenacious fucker like that), we'll be faced with the same challenge: Adapt or Die. If we can't adapt to life in that environment, we don't deserve to live in it. Simple as that.

We're a big reason their numbers are so few in the first place, we should atleast try to save their species after doing that to them.
News flash: Life isn't fair. It's a nice sentiment, but whatever we do, unless we actually restore their environment back to whatever it was before, they'll continue to die off. And no one's willing to do that. All living things either adapt or die, and Tigers have proven (or at least given strong evidence to the theory) that they're incapable of adapting.
I would love to meet the mammal that can adapt to getting shot in the face with a rifle.
