I have to do an essay about what makes Tim Burton films successful & it would be really helpful if you could answer a few questions for me as research =)
Just answer whichever you can be bothered to do, doesn't matter too much if you miss one out due to laziness or it not applying.

1) What's the first thing that comes to mind when Tim Burton is mentioned?
2) What would be the main reason for you to go and see a TB film?
3) What is your favourite & least favourite TB film? Why?
4) What do you think of TB's casting choices?
5) What do you think makes a TB film successful?

If you want to add anything else about Tim Burton or his films, feel free - anything's useful.

Thanks in advance.
1) Long, spindly legs - physics defying.
2) I like the cross between cartoon and gothic
3) Corpse Bride - I liked the musical aspect of it, and it was a good film. Coraline - not that it was bad, it just didn't have the magic of the others.
4) Erm... Johnny Depp. Oh, and a good array of English actors.
5) The name alone attracts a certain crowd, but I'd say the more abstract the better.

Edit: Hmm, it appears I was only looking at his puppety films... ah well, take it as you will!

1) What's the first thing that comes to mind when Tim Burton is mentioned? Generally, macabre humour.
2) What would be the main reason for you to go and see a TB film? The fact that it's done by TB. Also, that half his films have either, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, or Alan Rickman. And I'm a big fan of them all.
3) What is your favourite & least favourite TB film? Why? Favourite would be Sleepy Hollow or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, just because they're damn good films that interest me. Least favourite is Ed Wood, because it doesn't have TB's trademark dark and macabre style.
4) What do you think of TB's casting choices? Usually, they're pretty good. He does cast JD, HBC and AR a hell of a lot, but that's good because they work so well as partners. I'm perfectly happy with the way TB casts for his films.
5) What do you think makes a TB film successful? Well, I just like them because of the dark style. But generally, I'd have to say it's because he is simply unique and has a great film-making style.

If you want to add anything else about Tim Burton or his films, feel free - anything's useful.

Thanks in advance.
My answers are all in bold in the quote box.

1. Gothic postmodernism, of course. And those crooked trees he always uses.
2. I know it'll probably have something I can appreciate.
3. Favourite - Batman. Least favourite - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
4. A little predictable, but don't fix what ain't broken, I suppose. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter always seem to fit the sort of film he makes.
5. The fact that it's instantly recognisable as a Tim Burton film. He has his own unique vision of films, and I think people respect that.

That wasn't him, it was Henry Selick. He did also direct the Nightmare Before Christmas (not Tim Burton as is widely believed), so many people think that Tim Burton did Coraline instead.

1) Jack Skellington.
2) I am a big fan of most of his films, like Sweeny Todd and Corpse Bride.
3) My favourite is the Nightmare Before Christmas, because I love the songs, and my least favourite is Planet of the Apes, because the ending made no sense.
4) I think they're good, but he could do with not casting Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham-Carter once in a while, just to shake things up.
5) The gothic quirkiness.

1. "God, I hate Tim Burton"
2. I probably wouldn't.
3. Did Tim Burton do that Batman with Catwoman in? That was alright, I guess. Everything eles of his that I've seen I hated, though.
4. "Oh, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter AGAIN." Predictable and boring, one of the reasons I can't stand his films.
5. It appeals to gothic wannabes? I don't know, I don't like his films, so I can't really say.

Harsh, but I really don't like his films.

1) Original and entertaining movies.
2) My friend is a huge fan and gets them all on dvd. We then have movie night.
3)This is a tough one. My favourite would have to be either Sweeney Todd or Edward scissorhands. Least would be either Corpse Bride or Coraline. I just couldn't get into them.
4) JD is a good actor (along with the other actors for the most part) I like them.
5) People like his movies? I really don't know.

1) Dark, Gothic, Bizzare films. "Burtonized" is a phrase that's being used too much.

2) If the plot interested me? I wouldn't go and see a film purely because he directed it.

3) Favourite: Tricky. If you count that he produced it, Batman Forever . If not, Batman Returns . Least Favourite: Sleepy Hollow. Just didn't like it.

4) He does tend to cast the same reccuring actors/actresses a lot. That can be good in some ways, yet some variety would be an asset.

5) He's found a niche in the genre and he's good at it.

1) Surreal, pastel suburbia contrasting with a dark, neo-gothic protagonist who's clearly out of his element. Probably because Edward Scissorhands was the first Burton film I ever saw.
2) The subject matter. These days, he makes movies on topics I'd be interested to see his take on, like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
3) Favorite: Edward Scissorhands. Partially because it was my first, but mostly because I find the story to be very poignant. Cliche, I know, but that's the best way I can think to put it.
Least Favorite: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's probably because I grew up watching the Gene Wilder version every couple of days when I was a kid, but I found Burton's take on the classic to be disturbingly hyper-kinetic, obnoxious, and needlessly mean spirited.
4) He's usually spot on.
5) The visuals and the star factor. Simply put, Burton films are almost always fun to look at. Combine that with the stellar skills of the likes of Johnny Depp and you've got a movie that most can't resist.

1) What's the first thing that comes to mind when Tim Burton is mentioned?
Family friendly horror.

2) What would be the main reason for you to go and see a TB film?
Can normally trust the aesthetic to be enjoyable. Generally good solid stories told in an interesting way, faux-dark way.

3) What is your favourite & least favourite TB film? Why?
Favourite: Sleepy Hollow: Brilliantly atmospheric horror film using a well known but underused horror figure.
Least favourite: Plant of the Apes: Shockingly poor, clearly not a story well suited to Burton's style, perhaps unfortunately demonstrating that Burton is good at one style and that's all.

4) What do you think of TB's casting choices?
Johnny Depp is a modern great, however, I think most of Depps's best roles are elsewhere. Otherwise I wouldn't notice good or bad. Competent, but then it is not entirely his choice.

5) What do you think makes a TB film successful?
The blend of mysterious/unusual/darkness on top of essentially moral tales (animations & family friendly films) or traditional horror (Sleepy Hollow).

You liked those films? Dear god man, why? They are enjoyable only in the same way Mystery Science Theatre films are.

1) Something very surreal, and generally very different.
2) Interest in the idea at hand.
3) Favorite is tough, I want to say Nightmare before Xmas, however I really liked what he did with Big Fish "didn't even know he did that movie until I looked it up" as for worst that I've actually seen, I don't really know. I've been trying to think on that for a while, and I keep having trouble with that, all his movies seem to have one thing or another that makes me go "Awww...no that was cool...rada rada"
4) Generally makes good decisions. He seems very loyal to his actors.
5) I think what makes a Tim Burton film successful is a culmination of things. He doesn't have just 1 trick. Generally he knows when to be serious, when to be comical, and somehow, no matter how surreal the characters are, he always manages to make the audience connect to them.

1) His dark style of animation.
2) Story and characters seem interesting based on trailer.
3) Favorite: Nightmare Before Christmas, at least until Nine comes out.
Least Favorite: Edward Scissor Hands
4) Johnny Depp fits perfectly with Tim Burton's style. The supporting cast is usually pretty good too.
5) The dark fantasy worlds he creates and interesting characters. And his unique style.

Not to be a heckler but he didn't actually do Coraline, that was actually Henry Selick http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coraline_(film) "common mistake, since he was the guy who actually directed Nightmare b4xmas, Burton Produced and co-wrote it"

3) Favorite:Ed Wood, because its a clever and inspiring story with interesting characters. Least Favorite: Planet of the Apes, its just a bad remake.
4) They all fit the roles they play but I would like to see some new faces every now and then.
5) The sheer uniqueness of them. There's no one else like him.

Hmm OK, lets see...

1) A sense of gothic...ness
2) I've enjoyed a lot of his previous work.
3) Favourite: Edward Scissorhands - I just find the story, acting and general weirdness of it all.
Least Favourite: Planet Of The Apes. I don't think I need to explain that one.
4) Burton is usually spot on with his casting, Johnny Depp is the perfect actor to complement Burton's style, Helena Bonham-Carter even more so, and his supporting casts generally are not only good, but suit the world he's created in that movie.
5) I don't think any one thing makes a Tim Burton film successful. I think the mixture of dark, sometimes downright creepy worlds he creates, the ability he has to move a story along at the right pace, the performances he gets from his actors, among other things, is what makes him so successful.
