wtf are you talking about??

Brutal Legend is hardly difficult or complicated... I'll accept sometimes there's lack of direction further into the game but that's just the games way of saying why the hell do I have to spell it out for you? Or cant you spoon feed your own ideas on how to complete the level.

The first rock/war battle you get into it pretty much shows you how to win. I picked it up so easily and found out how to individually select and send units it was a breeze. I'm surprised as to how simple they made it what with it being a console Hack'n'slash/RPG/RTS/driver.

Most of these battles were pretty easy, the units are all pretty straight forward and easy enough to figure out, just some common sense and learning to put the enemy in choke points.

Battles become even easier when you learn some (all) solo's and starting using them, Warcry to boost attack power, Facemelter wipes all small infantry, Summon flag saves backforthing, dont forget you can take part as an individual player, so you can easily distract opposing infantry to choke opponents relay times.

Probably making it abit harder is the way the RTS is presented, makes micromanaging slightly more difficult.

Another tip would be to stop the campaign and check out multiplayer, where you can read up on what each Faction is about (Drowning uses healing and dampners, Tainted Coil has fast spawning) so you know who to prioritise which units to kill first.

The problem is, it IS fully explained.. When you go into the AI Stage Multiplayer Option for the first time.. there's a nifty little explanation of everything you need (except how to play the Tainted Coil)..

I didn't have too much of a problem, but my issue with it is that it's a bait and switch. It's an interesting concept, but I didn't mean to get an RTS.. I wanted a Metal Themed Action game.. and I got something completely different.. was it bad? No, not really, but it definitely wasn't what I expected.

Yeah, fiddling around with the three sides is quite fun. For a game that's not really an RTS they've done a good job of differentiating them. Tainted Coil in particular, given the way their unit production works.

Oh yes cause no one ever has to explain anything ever and if they do it is bad.
Kinda is a good thing for all you whiners wanting new stuff. If you have to be told how, it means you are not familliar with it. Play one shooter and you know most all, play an RTS, same thing (aside from specifics of units), same for fighters e.t.c.
So really, its a good thing.

So the infantry are not as ineffective against the coil as they were against drowning doom? I'll try using them again so. Are the enemies finite?

Another thing... Tim says that you should always be in the centre of the battle, swinging your axe.

When I do this, Eddie is dead within 2 or 3 seconds. Half the time there is so much chaos that you don't even know who is attacking you. And those goddamn lightning throwing horse riders...ugh.

I never use the zeppelin solo because I always die before I even finish playing the damn thing.

Bear in mind I have NEVER played an RTS.
The reaper horses are meant to destroy you almost instantly, thus the need for strategy. Use your army to take them out quickly. Blitzkreig attacks straight through the middle always worked for me though. Work early to capture all the fan guysers then keep pushing through to the enemy stage. Always be sure to keep your army full and balanced. If you're having trouble surviving try finding all the serpent scuptures, finding ten will award you a bonus health, regeneration, or troop bonuses.
Thanks. I guess its the same principle as Street Fighter, you gotta put in the time to learn what is effective and countering what, and when to use certain attacks and powers.

I finished it in the end, and the story was ace. Maybe I'll go back and learn the intricacies someday but for now it's back to COD4 to practice for next month!

Now now people, no need to get cranky, nobody is criticising old Tim, just throwing a few questions out there.

I personally won't be playing any more RTS games because I suck at multitasking and it wasn't fun trying to so more than one thing at a time with the AI (hence why I hate escort missions). But I can see why other people enjoy them.

Also, I had no problems with the first few battles, it was when the big trees full of crows and hot air baloons started tearing everything I sent at them apart that it got confusing.

So apparently Tim Schafer has sent out a message to the BL community as many of them have been having problems understanding the game's 'RTS' sections and how they work.

Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't these things have been made clear in the game itself??

Personally I am finding these sections in the campaign insanely annoying, (not to mention boring) and have had to switch the game off twice in frustration after losing 40 minute plus battles.

Has anyone else had problems with this game? Or did you all find it easy?

Do you think more developers should follow his example and give us a little helping hand if they fuck up their games' tutorials?
I found them pretty easy and I've barely ever played RTS games before. But yeah if they screw up the in-game tutorial then they should explain it like Tim did. But I didn't really think they screwed up the in-game tutorials at all
Indeed, I found most of them easy too - I found them difficult maybe twice. And those were late missions that were MEANT to be harder ;)

It's not hard to understand. Seriously, the whole single player campaign is a tutorial that slowly builds up things in the game. If you don't understand it then you are a moron and that's putting it politely. I did find some of the RTS sections a bit frustrating but I was playing on Brutal difficulty so I changed it down to normal and started to enjoy it again. Lionwhyte still pisses me off though, shrieking his name like some crackhead pokemon.

Charming.

Wasn't too long ago we used to post on the Escapist and help eachother out, give each other advice... have civil discussions.

We're heading more into gamespot territory every day.

Tutorial could've been better. I could see the fix being as simple as a sound bite from Jack Black "But always look the enemies of metal in the eye... etc etc"

Face Melter was pretty good to setup if you see a group of enemies closing in.

I haven't had trouble until I got to the Sea of Black Tears. I didn't know how to collect/free the dragons, so no health upgrades for me.

The last fight is a ***** no doubt. But to win the majority of them you just have to take all the towers and set your rally flag close to the last tower you take. this is so all your new troops go to where the battle is as soon as they are spawned.

Also help out your troops by buffing them with battle cry and target large groups of enemies with your face melting solo (which can destroy almost every enemy in the game in one shot)

Woah, woah, let's not say things we can't take back. I apologise for being so blunt but I feel that the game explains itself pretty well. If you have a counter argument to present then I'd like to hear it.
