Time you rooted for the antagonist

I often feel sympathetic towards the generic enemies in games, whether they be Russians or Nazis in Call of Duty, or random guards in Splinter Cell Conviction. Do they want to be fighting me? Is it their choice? Do they have a family?

I'm incredibly logical. I always look at both sides of something.

For example, I don't consider Nazis to be the Ultimate Villain, because I have historical knowledge about the Second World War. Many people didn't join the National Socialist Party because they fully agreed with them, but because they had to to keep their jobs. People were conscripted to fight.

So yeah... I sympathise with most villains.

I would have to say the antagonists that I rooted for would have to be Grimmjow Jaggerjack and Coyote Stark from the Espada.

It's not really a specific antagonist, but the Land Before Time series always left me hoping the asteroid would hurry up and get here already.

The "bad guys" in Avatar
THANKYOU! THIS 1,000,000 times over.
I pretty much ALWAYS root for the bad guys, but in Avatar they were actually in the right for once. Damn, I hated that movie.
Right? About what? They wanted to displace the smurfs first by giving them shit, and when they didn't want it they had to do it by force. It was obvious that they were not 'in the right', at all...

James Cameron just wanted them, the PMC army, to be dicks with zero redeeming qualities. And he suceeded.

I agree the movie was heavy handed as fuck thus actually making me root for the bad guys, but in no way did I ever get the idea that they were 'in the right', not at all... ...but they were killing smurfs, though, and being overall nasty jerks, just like I like it.

I'm gonna say Light Yagami from Deathnote, although maybe not because he is the main character. Hmm, does making him the focus of the show mean he's the protagonist?

Most of them except the obvious ones where the villain has no redeeming qualities to them. Example: Schindler's List. Voldemort was an utter dick in that (I know he's not Voldemort but it's the same actor and I can't remember his name).

I notice the trend more in films than books. In books I route for the hero, but in films...why do they insist on making villains so cool all the damn time?

Jigsaw and Detective Hoffman from the Saw movies, Crawford from Fracture, the freakin' greek gods in God of War 3 (seriously, Kratos is just fucked), Mr. House in Fallout New Vegas, Deathborn in F-Zero GX (yeah, I know), SKX in Condemned (not looking forward to possibly killing him in the next game), other than that, I guess I can't think of any right now that have't been mentioned already.

The humans in Avatar, if that counts.
Ah, then can I take it that you also rooted for Major Chip Hazard and the other members of the Commando Elite in Small Soldiers?
I know this wasn't directed at me, necessarily, but I loved Major Chip Hazard! He and his whole squad were just cooler than beans. I also rooted for the Humans in Avatar... such an awful movie, I wish I hadn't watched it.

Also, in Fallout 3, I couldn't help rooting for the Enclave, if only because of the awesome monologues of John Henry Eden

Yes, but I think the OP means villains as well.

Harley Quinn from Batman Arkham Asylum. She's only trying to get Mr.J's approval so he won't beat her as much, give her a break!

I rooted for Al Swearengen in Deadwood, right from the start. Great character, but probably not the greatest person.

From the world of Manga and Anime:
1. Izaya from Durarara, though I am not certain if he's the actual antagonist
2. Shishio from Kenshin, the man had a flaming sword how can you not like that?
3. Cell from DBZ, the only reason I watched any part of that show
4. Dou Haguro from Wolf Guy Ookami No Monshou, the man is goes through like seven different kinds of insanity in that manga and he's still awesome.
5. And Cyote Stark from Bleach: the number 1 espada and the man with the two most powerful pistols ever. Plus the man can summon kamakaze wolves to kill his enemies, he deserved a better adversary.

The Trojans in the movie Troy.

I couldn't stand Achilles attitude in the movie (and I know it was mostly meant to be that way but I think just the way Brad Pitt played him pissed me off somehow). Plus, Hector was just a badass mofo in my books. Lead the armies of Troy to so many victories and has the balls to take on the pussy half-god ladies man with a big ego. Hector was the king Troy should have had from the start.

Oh well though...
Yeah, although my mate who studies classics says that portrayal is fairly accurate to the iliad (or at least more so than any other ones).

Hector was indeed awesome. Proves how superior older siblings are because my GOD Paris was such a little *****.

Tbag from prison break. Just watched the episode last night where Link rips out two of his teeth while grilling him for info. Considering Tbag raped and killed 6 teenagers for a 6-pack of schlitz, I shouldn't care about him, or even enjoy the torture, but I found myself feeling bad for him.
