Timothy Plan Updates "Do Not Buy List" of Videogames for the Holiday Season

The list of "Top Offensive Games" of 2009 & 2010 released by the Timothy Group contains some expected titles as well as a few head-scratchers.

The Timothy Plan is an investing option for people who are concerned only with putting money in companies which promote good old Christian values. In addition to providing a "Hall of Shame" of companies which are involved in activities which the Timothy Plan deems are devoid of morals such as abortion, cloning, gambling, alcohol and tobacco, the experts also provide a list of videogames [http://www.timothyplan.com/ProActive/frame-ProActive-videogame.htm] to avoid having in your home if you support Judeo-Christian values. The list is pretty typical for this kind of fear-mongering (GTA IV, God of War III, Dragon Age) but I was surprised to see Nier and Alan Wake make the cut as one of the 25 most "violent and anti-family" games in the last 2 years.

The Timothy Plan said that Nier, a Japanese RPG that seemed to cater to the Western audience [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/reviews/1701-Nier-Review-Supplement], has sexual content. "Flirtatious dialogue and romantic discussions occur within the game," the report reads. "A female character is dressed in a skimpy outfit and shows her posterior and cleavage." Someone should tell them that the character in question is actually a dude, or at least a hermaphrodite.

Alan Wake is the only game on the list rated T for Teen, but the Timothy Plan doesn't care about that, only nudity. "Alan's wife in the game was wearing her underwear when she disappeared, so when you see her in other scenes in the game all she is wearing is that underwear and a vest," the report reads. What? A vest? How dare they?

To be fair, the Timothy Plan is not trying to censor games in any way and the list is just meant to be a guide for parents who might be concerned. "This is not an attempt to ban video games, or dictate whether people should play them," the website reads. "This is purely meant to inform parents who are concerned with the moral content/issues contained in video games and make available to them information which is not easily found."

I understand that not all parents have the desire or time to play through an entire game before letting their kids go to town, but I find the trite summations of these kinds of lists a little misleading. Gratuitous violence is one thing, but what if that violence is in service to your country, or if you must kill in order to save your child. Many games feature themes such as this but the narrative justification is never discussed in such a short list.

Okay?

I don't really see the point in writing this up. They adhere to what some may call antiquated values and are judging entertainment based on these. They differ from values commonly shared on websites such as these.

I don't get it. There's no direct harm or anything.

Oh well. Alan Wake was a bit of a head scratcher though.

I see. Incidentally, the picture for their 'video games' section is a young child (Way younger than the actual demographic for these games) enjoying a (probably violent) video game with an evil look on his face while a parent sleeps in the background. SYMBOLISM! Because after all, video games are evil, child-corrupting menaces to society and if you take your eye off of your child for one moment, they will turn into a psychotic, drug-addled, violent loner. Cause god forbid our kids are introduced to that.

*says as I watch the news where in a single hour they talk about a sexual abuse case using very descriptive words, a report on a local gang shooting, a beer commercial, and an advertisement for the local strip club and a commercial for some pretty slutty looking clothing on young and older girls*

Why, if they werent in videogames, kids would never see that.

*facepalm* I mean, i get that they're not censoring, and that tehy're making a list that you cna take what you want from. But still, their guidelines are a bit obsessive and really need to chill out in comparison to what kids can read in books, see in tv (news and cartoons), or hear on the radio. They may as well just say, "here, put your kid a soundproof plastic bubble, then spray paint it black so they can see or hear anything.

To each their own.

Aslong as they dont start picketing, I'm fine with them being against violent/naughty games.

I think the point is that they are just being ignorant and talking about things they don't understand. Someone with a telescope in their backyard shouldn't try to lecture others on the lives of galaxies.

What makes them think parents are more inclined to go out of their way to read this list than the back of the damn game box?

I'd like to see how the editor of this website would act if he played Amnesia. He'd probably claw his face off.

PENIS. MY GOD SOMEONE HAS A PENIS. AND IT'S NOT MUTILATED LIKE GOOD AMERICAN PENIS. THIS SHOULD BE BANNED.

What I don't understand is that they clearly treat portrayal of homosexual characters as a bad thing, yet they call Watchmen: The End Is Nigh out specifically for having homosexual slurs. Am I misunderstanding or are they condemning both homosexuality and using it as an insult?

Probably because whatever's written on the game box usually comes down to, "this game is awesome; BUY IT!"

I'm not siding with The Timothy Plan, but the back of a game box isn't to trustworthy either. Parents should just check out some of the online reviews and make their decision based on that.

But like I said, it's their views and aslong as they don't try to censor ours, I really don't mind.

Am I the only one who hopes that the Timothy Plan logo is Timmy from South Park? It would be somewhat appropriate if some of the things described in this article are true.

I've got a few do not buy games on my list

Army of Two
Army of Two (sequel)
Metroid Other M
Mario All Stars (overpriced transfer of the cartridge to a wii disc)
Dantes Inferno

Seriously possibly the worst games I've played ...with the exception of Mario right here.

I'm talking about the rating and why it's rated that.

So...underwear is bad now? At least characters are depicted wearing it instead of without...

Also, the section for Alpha Protocol makes me lol. Somebody obviously didn't play it very much.

Also New Vegas 'suggesting' you had sex with a robot is putting it a bit lightly if you ask me. =P

Haha, I burst out laughing at "pörnography". Are they secretly huge metal fans, or is the word so blasphemous that just to say it is to commit a big sin?

Thanks Timmy, but we've already got a group warning us about games that are not suitable for children. It's called the ESRB. Steer clear of all the M-rated games and read the ESRB rating descriptors for the T-rated games. In other words, if you're a parent, don't be a complete fuckwit.
