I live in Australia so tipping isn't really that embedded into our culture, I'll round up to the nearest multiple of 5 usually for cabs and restaurants but that's about it.

15%-20% for a basic meal. 30%-40% if I am there for a long period of time. Whenever the guys and I go out for a football game to a sportsbar we stay for the whole thing. Even after our meal is delivered we expect service. If the waiter/waitress continues to fill our drinks and such we pay more than we normally would for a tip because of the length of time we are there (2-3 hours).

To everyone who doesn't tip. If you don't do it because the service was terrible thats okay but if the reason is "because they already get paid" keep in mind restaurants usually pay less than minimum wage because tips are expected. That person who just refilled your drink three times and brought you the ranch you forgot to order the first time gets paid less than the stockboy at Wal-Mart.

And along with being paid less than minimum wage, they also do some back breaking work. Being a waiter is a difficult job and the job itself is very unstable considering the amount of tips received can vary rapidly. It can be a good job if you really know what you're doing and how to please people, but otherwise it's one of the most shittiest jobs you can have.

I just wouldn't want a job that could fluctuate so much with how well your cooks are. Any sort of management decision that scares of customers affects your income immediately.

I tip like Americans are expected to. I hear more restaurants in the city are starting to require a percentage tip because of the international visitors who (reasonably) don't get it.

What's shocking about the tipping culture in the U.S. is the amount of people who need a calculator/app to figure it out.

Tipping is abhorrent. It is a system created by people accepting pay which is to low for them to live off, and companies exploiting that.

Do the job, get the pay. The idea that someone should get paid less than they need to live by their employer is, frankly, abusive and disgusting. You shouldn't need tips, if anything they should be a nice bonus, not something you need to live.

I do not, cannot, understand why employees in other parts of the world except this stupidity. People should be paid a fair wage for a day's work, not need to live off the kindness of others.

Tipping, if it needs to exist at all, should be restricted to a voluntary bonus for exceptional service, not something people are required to give or the person serving them cannot eat.

But the US does use the "tips are expected" system, so I definitely tip.
I go by the saying of, "If you can't tip, you can't eat." (with the implied "At a restaurant" thrown in there)

Still, the idea of someone skipping out on tips in the US (save tight financial situations) just rubs me the wrong way- It just seems to fall somewhere around someone grabbing for power wherever they can get it, or just being completely unaware of others.

It's also highly expected here in Canada. I worked in a restaurant for 4.5 years, and I made decent money from my tips. Now, if you were to go and ask the girls that worked as servers in the night clubs downtown, they would tell you that they made a fucking killing on tips.

On a different note, I was told on a trip to China years back, that under no circumstances were you to tip. They would only find it insulting and refuse it.

I tip 10% on a meal if the waitress is nice, punctual, and always at the ready. I tip 20% to maybe even 30% if they are cute, honest, or make me laugh. I generally avoid not tipping so I make sure they at least get a little something. But if you make my evening fun, hell, your getting a nice tip from me.

I live in the UK, and when I go to a restaurant with other people, no tips are usually given. I've already paid for my food, and the waiters get paid as well. Are we supposed to pay them extra for simply doing there job, that they are being paid to do anyway?

I've heard it tipping is much more common in America though.

Depends on the quality of service, quality of the food but usually about 15%. A bit more if I'm there fairly often.

I know people who never tip and I know people who will tip a certain percentage no matter the quality of the service. Me? I'll tip depending on the service. If the waiter is never around, or never refills my drink, or takes forever to take my order, then he/she isn't getting a good tip if at all.. But if they are good, well... I've been known to go as high as 25%

I always tip at least $5, or 20% which ever is higher. Because i've worked in restaurants, I know first hand how shitty those jobs are. I know how grossly underpaid alot of those people are, most of them work 50 to 60 hours a weak where i am. So yeah i tip, always. I tip the waiter, the delivery person, the hair dresser. On a side note, whats with everybody missing that last one? It's rude not to tip your hair dresser.
