So, I bought Dark Souls, and I don't know why. Not saying the game is bad, but I never buy games like it. I only buy games that are free roam or have online multiplayer which ensures I get my money worth in regards of time played. But I saw in Best Buy and I just bought it.
And now I'm scared. I chose the wanderer class, and I'm out of the undead asylum and I have no fcking clue what is going on. What is the story? Why does my face look like a burnt cigaret? What is humanity?
I sort of know where to go, I've gotten quite far into the Undead Burg, but I'm scared as fuck to die. My mane question question is what should I put my leveling points into? Any tips for combat? Right now I just block, attack then go straight back to blocking. How can I fight mobs of enemies efficiantly?
Any tips would be grestly appreciated!

Don't focus too much on the story, it's really not meant to take the center-stage. You look like a burnt cigarette because you're character is undead. Humanity allows you to come back to life, ( Until you die again ) kindle bonfires, ( Which gives you more Estus ) and I think being alive is one of the requirements for invading another players world. You can put leveling points into whatever you want, it all just depends on your play style. If you hit the "select" button on the stat screen, it will offer explanations as to what each stat does. As for combat, you may want to try dodging a little more when fighting mobs of enemies, since I believe that the Wanderer starting armor is rather light, and an entire mob attacking your shield at once will drain your stamina gauge fast. Also learn to prioritize enemies, based on which ones pose more of a threat to you. If you keep dying on a specific mob of enemies, try luring them out of their location to a battlefield that is more suitable to your play-style. Those are really the only tips I can offer, considering that I'm not that far into the game myself.

I'm no pro, myself, but I can certainly share one tip: pyromancy is freakin' awesome.

Just put points into your attack stat (probably Dex for you), Vitality, and Endurance.
EpicNameBro has an excellent walkthrough going that is extremely helpful for new players.

I've been fighting enemies about one and two at a time. Lure them away, then cut them down. Firebombs work wonders, but they also suck when used against you. The only helpful tip I can offer so far is block, then counter till the enemy is dead. Something I figured out: continuing to connect your attacks--attack, attack, attack--does more damage with each hit. Attacking once, then going straight back to blocking, only gives you basic damage. Don't know if you've figured that out, but I didn't realize it until I was trying to kill the skeletons and I just kept mashing attack.

Greatest advice I can give you, having played it myself for a few hours is this:

GET THE FUCK OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN! I'm serious man, if you're not ready for a serious WAR on your patience . . . then get the hell out.

After blocking a strong blow, lower your shield so, when you raise it for another heavy blow, you won't be staggered.

Have an idea of the direction your character will take early on. If you don't, you might end up wasting soul on an ultimately pointless level.

If your a wanderer that means your fast. (I play one too.) Unless you've picked up some bulky armor your best chance is to dodgeroll and circlestrafe and go for backstabs.

Don't worry about death so much. I died like 30 times in maybe an hour after leaving the tutorial, but I still handily beat my very slow/cautious friend to the first bell.

Dying only sets you back if you have a lot of souls, and even then only if you don't make it back to the bloodstain. I sprinted past enemies and entire areas left and right while exploring, and it led me to learn the layout quickly.

Not saying that a fast and incautious play-style is the only option, just saying that you can die often and still get through the game.

Hey hey hey, a fellow Wanderer :D

Other people seem to have given you good pointers for now, so I'll just say this.

Step 1: Get bow and arrows.
Step 2: Shoot the tail 15-20 times.

I'll leave it somewhat riddle-tastic so it isn't completely easy for you. The game is about challenge, after all.

Actually, no one explained what humanity does, so:

If you're Human, you can summon other players to assist you, use extra humanity to kindle bonfires, making them fill your Estus Flask with five additional uses (I'm guessing per kindle, but I've yet to test that, and I feel like if you need more than ten for a situation, you're pretty fucked anyways), and if you have extra humanity while you're walking around as a human, enemies are more likely to drop items.

Also, take note, and this is VERY IMPORTANT: if you die while you have humanity, you can reclaim it along with lost souls if you can make it to where you died. YOU CANNOT RECLAIM YOUR HUMAN FORM. If you have humanity and you're wondering if you want to turn human, consider these questions:

1. "Am I facing down a difficult area and will I most likely die?"
2. "Am I facing a boss and do I really NEED the assistance?"
3. "OMGWTFBBQTHISISHARD."

That last one isn't so much a question as it is an inevitable thought.

Enjoy :)

Oh, and if you can manage to beat the bug in the woods and get the key from it, FIND OUT WHERE TO USE THAT KEY. Good loot.

My advice is to explore as much as possible , look at everything , down ledges , off bridges , destroy everything . Theres a lot of hidden paths, items , weapons , rings , even bonfires . Theres invisible walls , mimic chests , leaps of faith the whole. Other than that , just have fun and be patient. If you get stuck , well theres always walkthroughs or if your like me and don't want to use those for first playthrough then be observant or stop playing for a bit and come back a few hours later refreashed .

My personal favorite weapons are great axes and spears. The axe has good swinging range and are fairly quick and the spear also has good range ( straight line ) and are even quicker , great for bosses. Oh and always wear a sheild and learn how to parry.

Advice so far:
1. Learn the timings of your opponents, so you can learn when to block.
Blocking slows your stamina recovery; the less time you have to block, the more attacks and doges you'll be able to do.

2. Don't be afraid to die, or lose Souls.
Farming Souls is easy; dying is something you'll do often. The sooner you can come to grips with death being a fact, the better you'll do - and the less you'll die - as your nerves won't be rattled so easily.

3. Die the first time you encounter a Mini-boss or a Boss.
Watch the boss, learn it's attacks, it's patterns, and concentrate on learning openings for attacks. You won't kill the boss on your first attempt; put your first death to better use and study it.

4. Die safely.
If you're going to die, move back to a safer area so that regaining your Souls will be easier. I collected some 5,000 Souls simply exploring and dying, and making sure I could recover my Souls before I died again.

5. Play Online.
The tips and hints that players leave can be invaluable; seeing where a player died can be helpful in understanding their mistakes. I used one of my free Xbox Live 1 Month coupons.

Ill answer these. Your dead. You are a zombie and thats why you look as such.
Humanity is a disembodied vagina (it really is just look at it) that can restore your human form (amongst other functions) and acts as secondary/special currency behind the normal currency of souls and has the ability to make you look like your normal non zombie self.

Oh, interesting tidbit I've yet to see mentioned anywhere- you get more souls per kill if you finish with a power attack, back attack, or counter.

After you get to the Blacksmith, start saving souls to buy the 20,000 item he sells. It unlocks a door that leads to probably one of the best soul farming spots in the game. The absolute best investment of souls I've made in the game to date, and I'm still kicking myself for not doing this sooner.

Be patient, you'll die A LOT and have to walk back to places A LOT. Being patient also causes that to happen less.

1: Be patient.

2: Take it slow.

3: Keep your shield up at all times.

4: BE GOD DAMN PATIENT.

5: Do not run through an area unless you've explored it before and know what to expect. Otherwise you're begging for an ass kicking.

6: While hard, Dark Souls, like its predecessor is fair for the most part. 90% of your deaths are your fault and yours alone and aren't usually the result of cheap bullshit, the game is a learning experience, learn from your screw ups and think how better to approach the situation next time.

7: The Capra Demon IS cheap bullshit however. You'll understand this point when you fight him.

8: Ideally, you want an idea of what your character is going to be before you get a decent way into the game, level your character accordingly.
Do you want it to be a slow, but heavy hitting, resilient, knight style character? Then pump your points into strength primarily as your damage stat, with the odd few points into dexterity for a couple really nice weapons, and then more points into things like endurance and vitality.
It's a logical process, faster, more nimble weapons require and scale with dexterity, slower, heavy hitters scale with strength.

9: There is almost always, always a shortcut back to the Firelink Shrine when you get close to a boss area, find it, rest at the bonfire there and save yourself a lot of time when you inevitably get your shit slapped the first time you fight it, it'll be a long walk back if you don't.

10: Humanity is not the same as being in human form, humanity, if I recall correctly, increases drop rates. Aside from that, it can be used to reverse the "hollowing", or undead form, as well as that, you can also use humanity to kindle bonfires for more Estus flasks every time you interact with that bonfire, the effect is permanent and can be done to multiple bonfires, you do however need the rite of kindling first.

11: Kindling bonfires also gives any other player online who rests at it an extra Estus flask, so if you've got humanity to spare, help a bro out and kindle a bonfire, because not only will it benefit you, but that extra Estus flask can mean the difference between beating a boss or getting beaten by it for that person.

12: Continuing with the topic of humanity, it's easily farmed from, curiously enough, rats in the linking area between the Undead Burg and the Undead Parish. Additionally, you can only summon other players to help you if you're in human form, so taking some time out to farm humanity here can be beneficial.

13: Calm your tits if you die, all is not lost, you can return to the point you died at to regain all your lost souls and humanity, but if you die before reclaiming it all, consider it lost.

Now for a little combat oriented stuff.

1: While blocking in combat is always beneficial, don't forget to drop your guard now and then when your stamina is low, your stamina recharges MUCH faster when your shield is down.

2: Drake Sword, bow, arrows, dragon's tail, underneath bridge. You do the math, insane weapon for practically no risk which slaps shit hard for a while but doesn't scale with any stat, meaning it sucks balls when you get to a high level. Worth getting, it'll make your life so much easier.

3: If guarding enemies are getting you down and you're feeling a bit impatient, moving the left stick forward and pressing R1/right bumper at the same time performs a kick which staggers your opponent, use this to your advantage. It can also be used to kick particularly irritating enemies from great heights.

4: In the same vein, forward and R2/right trigger executes a jumping lunge attack, it's risky, leaves you open to a very easy counter attack by faster enemies while doing it, but it can hit like a truck and end a fight very quickly, using it is entirely at your discretion and entirely at your own risk.

5: Forget parrying, just don't bother with it unless you're absolutely, 100% sure you can successfully pull it off. If successful, it may impart you with a one hit kill and an absolutely bitchin' animation, but without a lot of practice, it's too much of a high risk move to use regularly.

6: Two handing a weapon generally isn't worth doing unless it grants you some special ability with that weapon, like the Drake Sword and its shockwave attack. It's almost always preferable to one hand a weapon and use a shield.

7: Compared to Demon's Souls, rolling isn't nearly as effective as it used to be. There's a clear difference between the two games in that armour and straight up shield usage is miles more effective than it ever was. Plus, Dark Souls features more enemies than I can count that seem to have stupid fucking moves that track you and hit you even if you roll out of the way. Though dodging IS still useful in a pinch, don't forget it exists.

8: Pyromancy is broken, like, hilariously so. Abuse this for an easier time in general.

And that's all I can think of at this moment in time, hope it helps.

Here are some tips:

1. Don't be afraid to die; instead, try to use dying to your advantage. You can always gather important intel on bosses during a suicide run. You can even use a suicide run to collect valuable items in areas with tough enemies (just run past them and collect the item; it will still be in your inventory after they kill you).

2. Here's a link to the Dark Souls wiki (http://darksoulswiki.wikispaces.com/); it's still in progress, but it's helped me A LOT.

3. For a better early game, it is imperative that you get the Drake Sword, firstly because it's one of the most powerful weapons a low-level character can wield, and secondly because it makes soul-farming a WHOLE lot easier in the Undead Burg (find out how to get it using the wiki).

4. Don't be afraid to get up close and personal with the bosses, since I've mostly found it a whole lot easier to dodge their attacks when in close combat with them. HOWEVER, disregard this tactic if (A) There's more than one boss in the arena, or (B) The boss has wings.

5. Every enemy in the early game hates getting hit with firebombs.....

6. If you find yourself near a ledge with the urge to jump to another platform, for fucks sake, make sure that there's actually a reason to do so.

Thanks guy, I really appreciate all the great tips! One that no one has mentioned is have a clean pair of pants close by.
