I have made some good progress in Dark Soul's, if you have any questions or want hints about specific areas or enemies feel free to ask.

Run. If you keep dying and you are not a high level, run.

I would say also, pick a weapon that's tailored to your class. It's the same as Demon's Souls, so the tip works for Dark Souls as well.

Hope that helps! I've read what other people have posted and you've had some great help!! :3

Buy a couple of remove curse stones from the guy after the first bell tower you will thank me later.
As mentioned above get the drake sword, and I personaly think its better to do a bit of the forest after the first bell before the deapths.
On stats I'm not to sure on what i should be putting them into I run a knight and have 15 str 12 dex then rest going into end and vit I can't seem to find a clear cut guide on stats for a class. Also I picked no gift for my first Run was that a good idea?

Try playing as a Thief. They already come with the Master Key which can open up some shortcuts and locked doors early on and it also allows you to pick another gift.

And if you can, try and get to the merchant outside of Blighttown as soon as possible. He's the only merchant I know of thus far who sells the Bottomless Box which allows you to store items at bonfires which is extremely useful as it's the only way to store items in the game.

shield spear combo works well while you're low powered. if you want to break up mobs, bow and arrow them to drawer one or two out at a time
