I recently purchased the third edition of Dungeons and Dragons (All three core rule books, plus character sheets and die for only twenty five bucks) and I was wondering if anyone had some advice for a new player. The rules books have been very helpful, but is there any advice a more seasoned player might have about anything in the game.

Holy shit, you got quite a deal.

yeah, find someone who is experienced. But mostly just play with freinds, and avoid people who are too serious. The fun is goofing off with freinds, the game itself only provides a reason.

Well, just like any new game I recommend you don't try to min/max immediately. Play a few campaigns or one-shot adventures just to get a feel for the game and different styles of DMing. As a general rule of thumb, a good DM is one who lets you explore his world and his characters, and rewards creative thinking and problem solving. A bad DM is one who limits your adventuring to a linear path and punishes you for straying from it.

Start every game off like this:

Feeling brave tonight? How brave? Brave enough to do battles with hideous monsters? Brave enough to sneak around dank castles and chance being the next victim...of a Dragon strike!?
lol at dank castles ^_^

Find someone who has been playing for years, and play with him. Wow, that sounded bad.
Indeed

My advise try to exploit the rules as much as possible, i find it leads to shenanigans and fun.

Me: "Ok i pickpocket that bartender"

DM: "What do you want to pickpocket?"

Me: "His pants"

DM: "!? ok you can try, but its going to be diff..."

Me: Rolls a critical success "Do i get them?"

Find a group who are a good fit for you. If you are too serious or too silly you will have trouble meshing with the group. I found that the best way to get around this is to form your own group with one or two people who have experience playing so they can help out the new people.

Edit: where in Oregon do you live?

Play with friends.

Let everyone know you are new.

Get to know the rules, and be open to constructive criticism. If the DM corrects you on a rule or roll, just go with it.

Do what you can to help the game flow. Don't sit at the armor shop for thirty minutes trying to haggle the price down by 5 silver while everyone waits around for you.

Be a TEAM PLAYER. Your character can be an individual, but still do what is best for the group.

Occasionally a session will 'feature' another player over the rest of the group. Understand this. Willingly help out the Paladin in their quest to earn their first Holy Warhorse, and the favor will come around to you when you need help avenging your mother's death (or whatever character-specific adventure you might need help with).

Find some buddies who'd like to play, and find one guy who's played to DM. If you can't find a good DM, there are prewritten campaigns.

Taking credit for the Gamers movie?

Sir, I call you a plagiarist!

Great Movie
Damn they have seen through my ruse!!!

I thought it would be a better than story than when I looted a dead dragon, right infront of a half dragon player, she was not impressed
