Just bought FTL on the GoG sale, and my first playthrough went terribly. Ship set on fire, crew members randomly died, ran out of fuel, never had any money (and this was in easy mode!).
Anyone got any tips for a complete definnger to the game?
Burst lasers, burst lasers, burst lasers, burst lasers, and cloaking. Really though it's a rouge-like it's going to take you a few tries before you get the hang of the game and what you need to do to survive.
Generally you want to hit as many star points as possible before jumping to the next system.
If you get fire evacuate the area and open it to the void of space to let the vacuum put it out.
Bump up your shields to level 2 immediately to help absorb damage, then to level 3 shortly thereafter.
explore.
Like seriously.
This isn't the type of game you can rush through.
Also, stay away from danger whenever possible.
Get someone on shields.
If you've got an ion, stay focused on keeping the enemy shields down.
If you've got a missile, same as above
Missile and Laser? Missile the shields down and use lasers on their weapons.
Keep the same guy on weapons at all times and KEEP.HIM.ALIVE. after he gets his first star shit gets MUCH easier.

The ships have a certain theme to them, whether it be drones, missiles, burst lasers, etc and in most of my tries the game will go "NOPE!" and only offer the things you don't need. I think I've only played once where I could stock up on the stuff I actually needed. It's a special kind of frustration.
Edit: Oh, and my tip? Don't fuck with the spiders. Just don't.

Yes the game is rather random. Still not the incredibly, grind your teeth, punch through your computer screen angering randomness of Sword Girls but still rather annoying.
Edit: Yeah don't fuck with the Spiders or the Manti. Just...
it never ends well man ;-;

Even with ship theme's the most reliable and easiest way to get to the end and beat the battleship I found was simply loading up on as many weapons that fire multiple shots and letting lose at once.
That being said if you have multiple weapons don't use auto fire, it's far better to fire them all at once or in the order that maximizes damage.

Also what order is the best greatly depends on the enemy ship and what you need to take down - if you aren't trying to get that achievement for speed killing a ship, don't rush though it and waste missiles where missiles aren't needed. Take your time. Put the shields and weapons into red, then pull out your hull lasers. Or use Ion to keep the shields and weapons down, put the oxygen in red and cackle maniacally because you have maxed camera and are watching the pathetic FOOLS try to survive!
I have no idea how to start from... The start, since I've played FTL for far too long to actually give basic, practical advice. Instead I will ramble about the tactics that most reliably let me beat the game.
The ship that you (or at least I) can most reliably beat the game with is the alternate version of the starting one, at least it was for me. It comes equipped with four single lasers, each of which only take a single unit of power and recharge very quickly. These are incredibly useful for several reasons; most importantly, they're the perfect modular weapons for working with whatever else you might pick up on the way. They're especially good at mixing with Burst Lasers if you're lucky enough to find them, as they are the most reliable weapons for tearing shit up. Secondly, firing four weapons with such short cool down times will build up the skill of the crewmember controlling them very, very quickly. Thirdly... Well, they can potentially damage anything with less than four shield bars, and they will absolutely wreck the ships you start off against. Don't bother going for the shields with them in the first sector, just set all four guns to autofire on the enemy's weapon systems (in sync, of course) and you'll end up disabling most weaponry before it can fire a single shot.
You'll see a lot of people telling you that you need to get the cloaking system. Don't bother; the teleporter is half the price and much, much more important for disabling the flagship's weaponry in order to let you pick it apart piece by piece. Even on Normal difficulty, a ship with fully upgraded shields and a +50% dodge rating (which you should have by the end) will easily avoid all (or almost all) the damage from the drone storm and teleporter-laser thingy. Plus if you use a teleporter (or any other weapons, but the teleporter is the most practical) to exterminate an enemy crew along the way that's a bonus, since it nets yu more rewards than jsut blowing up the enemey ship.
Basically, you want to kill the crew in three of the four guns on the flagship. If you have a teleporter system, teleporting pretty much any two crewmembers into one weapon room will eventually kill the guy in it and destroy the gun too. Take out the missiles first, then the ion cannon, then the beam cannon. Leave the crewmember in the laser cannon, second from the left, alive. Once you've taken out the other three weapons the Flagship will be literally unable to harm you in its first form unless you turn off your shields for some reason. Use this time to figure things out; the first form is the hardest one to kill the crew in since it has both a stealth system and doors, but it's also the form where you're under the least pressure. As in, assuming you took out the weapons, no pressure.
PS. If you can unlock it, the Type B Rock cruiser starts with fire bombs. If you can get a teleporter to go with that, you will be able to board and devastate literally any ship, by hitting a room with a fire bomb and then teleporting your Rock crew members into that room while it's on fire.
PPS. The one piece of basic, practical advice I can give is to upgrade your sensors and doors once each. When you're new at the game, upgrading the sensors in order to see what the enemy crew are doing makes it a lot easier to figure out how you should be responding.
Don't be afraid to sell. If you don't have the systems to support some of the weaponry you get, and you don't feel like you are ever going to use it, the spare scrap can get you out of a bind.
Teleporters are a fantastic investment, and will easily earn you your money back swiftly. Doubly so if you can score two Mantis crew members. They can easily warp in and take enemies out with gusto. Though, if you do go that route, as well as taking down enemy weapons, you might have to let a few stray shots hit the medbay to keep them from healing on the bigger ships.
Oh, and never, ever, underestimate the power of two halberd lasers and a burst canon. Oh god, the damage.
