Read my tips :D.

Go look at a character build, it will help you ALOT.

Get atleast 8 agility, Get atleast 4 charisma. 5 strength iirc.

The game is pretty boring idd, i hear f1 was better.

In the first area by the temple, use Unarmed to kill stuff, because the spear sux. Tag speech at start, u can scare of the dude at the door, for easymode.

Do alot of quests in the towns. Start with killing rats and plants etc. DONT go around killing stuff in random encounter til u atleast got smgunz and revolvers for u and your followers. Then grind yourself silly on random encounters > > > beat game. hf.

Fallout tactics is just a whole lot more AWESUM.

Fallout tactics is just insanely good, its awesome.

Just read the wiki on fallout 1 for any referances you dont get you'll have a much better time that way. Fallout 2 is infinatley better in everyway without a shitty timer.

Not necessarily, I sometimes do not like games when they get too hard, but if I lower the difficulty settings Fallout 1 and 2 weren't that hard. Another thing for the topic creator, if the game is too hard, recommend to put it on easier difficulties until you get used to it.
Now hold on a second, isn't the point of having a lower difficulty setting to make the game easier? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this what you expected? Isn't this what everyone expects from lower difficulty settings?

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around just what you are trying to get across here. Lower difficulty settings make harder games easier? Revelation.

I'm so... what? Wtf?

Edit:

On topic, sorry. Fallout 2 is a great game, just don't go into it with a bunch of preconceptions you may have gained from playing Fallout 3. The two games are like apples and oranges when you take them away from their somewhat shared universe.

If you enjoyed old-school games like Planescape: Torment, the Baldur's Gate series and other western RPG's in the same vein you should be fine. Just keep in mind how old the original games are compared to what you will get today.

Sometimes people miss the obvious. It is just annoying how people are liek OMGZ Fallout 1 and 2 are way to hard or whatever when they don't have too be. In the same way like i mentioned earlier, I wonder how many people who complain about the pace of the combat neglect to look at the options screen in the earlier fallouts...

First of all, fallout 3 is more of an action/adventure game than a RPG, so both the first two fallouts are MILES better than it. As for tips here is what i can give you.

1. Save often, the game is buggy and you can be traveling through the wastes and then be jumped by over powered enemies and die, so try and save frequently and often to ensure you do not lose progress.

2. As others have said, the game does not really get started until about The Den, which is about the third or second area that you will go to. Until, then the game is slow and your character will be underpowered. This is the biggest flaw of the game. However after the Den you will increase in both strength and items to the point of not dieing to radioactive scorpions all the time. for the most part I tend to go back to the toxic caves after i visit the den.

3. Here is a big tip that will help you out. In the Den, as soon as you get into town there is a shop straight to your left on the screen. Go into the shop and kill the owner and steal all his stuff. Normally, this is impossible to do to most shops, since they have guards or the entire town will fight you, but for some reason this shop is different. No one will notice or care that you kill the guy and you will get a lot of useful items and guns from him.

4. Tag speech and use it. Unlike other games, in fallout 2 or 1 you can't go around killing everything (well not until you are super strong that is) and you must use different ways of solving problems. bartering, persuading, etc play a big role in the game and make for a better experience than just going around and killing everything. So go that route.

Also, despite there being a "time limit", these two games are some of the best RPG games ever made so i would suggest everyone to at least check them out. Fallout 3 was one of the worst RPGs that i have every played. It was not a bad game, but as far as a RPG is concerned it was horrible, beyond horrible.

Biggest and best advice I can give is simple: Don't give up.

The beginning areas are absolutely brutal, the starting equipment is pure shit, and the combat will at first seem about as bad as humanly possible. Meanwhile you certainly wont be staying for the visuals as these are quite old games which didn't even look particularly good when they were first released.

But don't give up, keep playing, and if you're like me you'll finally reach a point where the game suddenly opens up to you, the clouds part, you become misty eyed, and whisper softly "I understand now!" as you lean forward to graciously hug your computer monitor having achieved a new level of consciousness beyond that of simple mortality.

Or, ya know, you might start enjoying yourself. Story is damn good, dialogue is fantastic, there are approximately a bajillion ways to beat each scenario, and the character advancement is ridiculously satisfying.

Try not to get so enamored with the perfect builds, or the perfect way to go around doing things. Sure, get some tips from this thread, but always think about what you want to do. A lot of the fun in Fallout 2 is simply exploring the game. Then, after you beat it, you should totally read the Fallout 2 Ultimate Guide and see all the stuff that you could have done and what you did wrong with your stats. Cause no one gets it perfect the first time.

Become an overpowered god by running to San Fran as soon as you get out of the village, talk to the Brotherhood of Steel gentleman there, go to camp Navaroo and get yourself a free set of MKII Enclave power armour.

Do it every time I play it, and no, I've never felt guilty about it.

Golden rule number 1, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned, you cannot do everything you encounter the first time you come across it. Just move on and come back later
