The Victorians used a one legged stool...

...I guess the modern equivalent is a 'deadman's switch'. Simply put you rig up an electric system that triggers an alarm when it believes you're incapacitated maybe by pressure release on a pedal or a heart rate monitor...obviously totally unpractical in the time...

Fastest way out of work. Or you could check out for the night right now, wake up and get going early on it.

Oh those were the days! It's 1:40am and I'm up working - 4am is an average bed-time for me these days thanks to uni work.

My advice is to have a nice glass of cold water - if you get dehydrated you'll feel sleepy. Just force yourself to sip it every paragraph or something.

Get up and go for a walk every hour/half hour/whatever you're comfortable with - preferably out in the cold. The temperature is a bit of a system shock and should jerk you awake, and not staring at a computer screen/pad of paper and looking at stuff further away gives your eyes an "active rest".

And pull the plug out of your internet connection ;) - at least for the hour/half-hour you are working and then give yourself a break where you can use it.

Anyway, I think that's enough procrastination for now, I really should be working...ooh, some fresh paint (it's more interesting than my sodding essay)!

Do some pushups or if you have some dumbells, lift weights. That always seems to give me energy for a while.

First off Sugar = bad, it doesn't actually make you hyper or give you energy it's more of a high like the kind you get from opiates.

My recommendation, an apple they are actually fantastic and waking you up.

Sleep for 3 hours, listen to some metal, run around, take a really, REALLY hot shower and turn the TV on in the background.

if you want to be extra awake, try running around your house then sitting down again. i used to do that during all-nighters for school..

Take a 45 minute nap, work for 45 minutes, repeat. Do this every day and you'll get to the point where every cycle is REM sleep, so it's like two hours of your normal sleep. The downside to this is that you go completely insane after a few weeks. But it's totally worth it!

5 minute run (just book it), followed by some push-ups or weight-lifting of some sort (just quick), then a protein shake mixed with milk. (Leanfit brand tastes good).
