It's possible, but my thinking is that it's because the networks are trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator and lure in the people that find reality shows like Jersey Shore good. They had some interesting shows like Fight Quest or Human Weapon that would go into martial arts, explain the history and detail the techniques about the moves and style, even on occasion break down the physics of a punch to explain why a move can be so devastating. Now the best we can hope for is that Deadliest Warrior, the show with science soft enough to spread on a croissant.
I guess we simply don't watch TV to educate ourselves anymore...

OT: Don't ever suggest you can spread things on croissants to an actual Frenchmen, jam and butter are okay but beyond that...
Why would you want to spread anything on a croissant anyway?
That's the joke, croissants are fairly fragile so you wouldn't spread something too thick on them. I stole that from Yahtzee, I didn't consider that you were French XD
I'm not actually French, but I've beenving in France for 6 years now. These are the kind of things you pick up.
And if Yahtzee said it: Well that's normal, he's British by birth. Brits and Frenchmen have some kind of underlying hatred for each other in their genetic code.
No seriously, it sounds like some ignorant stereotype but there really is some kind of hatred between these two peoples, even if they themselves don't realise it.
That's the thing that still me baffles me after 6 years...

normally I'm not this brutal, but these people and everyone that enjoys this dribble should be sterilized to prevent them from breeding.
we have made a society that rewards the stupid people for breeding, and the smart people have too little an incentive to breed. we need more smart children in the Gene pool, damn it!

capacha: miss you
hell yes, good tv, i do.
You are joking right? Right? Prolonged internet exposure has made it very difficult to tell.
sorta, though i do wish so many fucking stupid people would stop having so many fucking stupid kids.
its how you get families like THAT, and how you get enough people to enjoy watching it.

There's obviously an audience for this shit. Kill them with fire and this might go away.

I know what you mean, my family's heavily Irish and for some reason they kinda seem uncomfortable when my British friend is around. I know of the conflicts and all but we're in America now, best to avoid being angry about another nationality when we're not in the motherland.

TLC has been near the bottom of the barrel for TV programming for a while now. They'll put pretty much anything they think could make money up, leading to a lot of disturbing low budget crap.

"I can?t even understand the lengths in which my mind has fallen, by watching a thirty second teaser for this. I have forgotten names of family members, memories of lovers lost, and new demons have entered my soul. I weep this evening. Not for myself, but for those not yet born, for they will never know a world where this did not exist."

This is the most appropriate reaction to this show.

This is a picture perfect example as to why I got rid of cable.

I yearn for the days when Bob Vila's This Old House was the only reality TV show on TLC.

I stay the fuck away from that channel after seeing various deformed children and 3,000 pound people on that channel. "shudders" That stuff is just downright depressing.

I'm glad that

A) I live in the UK where this monstrosity doesn't exist.

and

B) I don't have a TV and thus can remain blissfully ignorant that UK TV has sunk to this level too.

Why is there a show about retarded people? Is being mentally handicapped a reason to be on tv? I don't get it.

EDIT: actual comment on the video:
"Seriously? You people are calling Alana and her family repulsive? Saying you've lost faith in the human race? Attention, dumbasses: not everyone is like you. So maybe they wanna jump in mud. So maybe they're loud and obnoxious. How exactly does this affect you? I find them hilarious and they look like a lot of fun. You don't have to like them, but don't be so judgmental. Get your heads out of your asses."
