Speaking of things that are getting ridiculous...

Really? Do you really? Or are you just exaggerating to the extreme? Because if this truly does make you start to lose faith in humanity, then you have bigger problems than people overusing "tl;dr". And if not, just say it annoys you, because otherwise you're adding to the cycle of one overused and annoying meme just like the one you're annoyed with.
Ok, It's fair that it's an overused turn of phrase, but as I have said before I was joking. Perhaps the juxtaposition of the trivial nature of my remarks and the seriousness of the claim to have lost all faith in humanity would have clued you all into that.

Frankly when people latch on to this part of the post it is rather irritating. It's a classic move to latch onto something in the body of text that is irrelevant to the thesis and tear it to shreds when they disagree and/or have nothing useful to add to the discussion.

Sorry. Alright. Jeez.

We share the internet with just about everyone, which includes every jackass and snob with a connection. The way I see it, there are a few ways in which someone can arbitrarily assign their self superiority over others; on the internet, it's most commonly nerd elitism, and nerd elitism is the least qualified, least evidenced of all forms of elitism. "I am a snob: I'm better than you because I joined a 'community' of like-minded misanthropes with whom I 'talk' every day, and I create threads claiming that deathmatching over the internet counts as a social activity." It's not snobbery borne of artistic endeavor, workplace advancement or athletic achievement. This is where un-ironic My Little Pony gushing comes from. It's how memes that are interesting or funny for a few minutes almost immediately become as culturally relevant as "Make 7 Up Yours!" through constant regurgitation. It's how people say TTFN, TTYL, OMFG, SMH, LOL and ORLY and expect everyone who's "not a dumbass" to understand them.

And this is where "TL;DR" comes from. If something is too long for you to consider reading, a functional adult wouldn't stop by the thread to respond at all; he/she would simply move on. It's a thoroughly meaningless gesture, apart from the false sense of superiority it gives the person who posts it. The only way a post could be TL and so justify the fact that you didn't DL, even though you took the time to enter the forum and then respond, would be if it was rambly. But no one should be surprised at this point, as a great many Escapists will post before even finishing the OP. I created a thread telling a bunch of new Escapists to stop posting Shut up! I hate your opinion! threads because they had no efficacy, and most of the responses were "isn't that what this is?" accompanied by the cutest misspellings I had ever encountered.

The point is, most every adult and adolescent reads. We shouldn't be afraid of it. It's characteristically un-nerd, so I don't know why someone would take the time to let you know they think they're a better nerd than you because they don't like using their mind. I'm a retro gamer, an indie music fan, a film geek and a sci-fi, I dunnoh, wank. You can't out-nerd me by telling me you find my intelligence offensive.

The statements above are not meant to be applied to Escapists in general - just to the snobs out there.
Great post. I totally agree.

"Hey, I'm lazy and in my opinion, this is too long to read. You should be just as lazy as I am and avoid reading it as well."

Captcha: men hisionme. Sounds kinda PG-13.

I lost faith in humanity long before that, but it's a particularily glaring flaw these days: people can't read anymore. Nor can they write for that matter, and their attention spans are - what the hell is that in the Captcha? Sigma? How the hell do I type that?

I never saw the point in TL;DR to begin with. If you didn't read the OP then why are you commenting?

I had not even heard of TLDR until posting in the forums.
Sometimes I see it too often. Yes, it's ridiculous when it's used for a few lines. But I think it can be justified when it's a huuuuuge wall of text. Though to be honest, I usually read the wall of text anyway.
That is a specious argument. If you can summarize your whole text wall in a sentence YOU DON'T NEED THE TEXT WALL. Concise writing is a staple of good authorial style.

Sorry, what was that? It was so long I didn't read it.

Walls of text can be daunting and are usually a boring rant. Some people need to learn to paragraph. Others need to not be so damn lazy. The door swings both ways and hits someone in the face whichever way it goes.
I Agree with you 100% But i will ask whats with the Disturbing Sexual Fluttershy avatar
Yay, someone agrees : )

And the avatar is, ummm...
I saw it and had a random urge to make it my avatar, so I asked @Redingold if I should, thinking he might convince me otherwise.
He said I should use it. And, umm...
I don't really know. It's staying though. And you're going to love it.

Hey, don't pin the blame entirely on me. I just said yes because it seemed like the sort of thing this guy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view] might like.

I find it almost tragically amusing how frequently it used on this site, especially considering most peoples opinions that these forums are used for intelligent and worthwhile discussion. Personally I don't add TL;DR to my posts because if people cannot take the time to read what I have to say, then they are not worth talking to, and the same goes for me if I don't take the time to read other peoples posts; if I don't bother reading it all, I will not reply to it.

...I'll TL your DR...

[sub]Sorry...[/sub]

OT: I'll read long posts if they're well written and contain valid opinions. If it's another zombie thread or CoD hate or Minecraft/Valve/Bioware hate or a new user who doesn't know what he's talking about, I don't care. And if the poster doesn't take the time to punctuate and spell correctly, then I DEFINITELY won't bother.
