So, tomorrow I'm going to apply for a job. Nothing big, I'm only 17. The problem is that in 3 weeks (15. September) there is this animecon in Trondheim and I'm REALLY looking forward to it.
So if I apply for the job and get it I might have to work on 15. September and if I don't apply I might lose my chance to work there at all.
and the con is a bit bigger than just a con too. I'm meeting a lot of people I went to Japan with this summer that I can't really meet easily. including the girl I like.

So what should I do?

Apply, but tell them you have plans that day if you get an interview. See if you can work it out with them. Go ahead and decide now what you'll do if they won't give you the day off.

Whats the job and is it a job that you would like? How long is the animecon? If its just a day or 2, you could possibly apply for the job and ask the manager about taking those days off in advance.

It's a animal store and the con lasts one day.
The problem is I don't know if I can or if it's considered "okay" to ask for a day off when you've only worked there for a couple of weeks.

If I do apply and get the job, Is there something I can do if I can't get that day off?

EDIT: And yeah, I love animals so I would really like to work there

Is this some small Mom&Pop animal shop or is it something like PetCo or PetsMart?

It's not unheard of when people ask for a specific day off in advance before getting the job. Do as Jedoro said. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

As for getting the job but not getting the day off, not much I can say. You can just take it off anyway but lose your job, though that would suck. Maybe you can work with someone over there to cover your shift for that day?

Yeah, I say apply fo rthe job, usually the hiring process isn't quick anyway...it may take 3 weeks before you ever have your first day depending on if they have several layers of interviews...

That being said, simply stating "hey, i have a prior comitment on this date, is that going to be an issue" might actually gain you some brownie points rather than waiting until you're hired.

Well, if it's an hourly position (which, at 17, it probably will be) just give a week's notice that you won't be available that weekend and try to work something out with the boss.

But considering how long the interview process takes, you probably won't even start working within 3 weeks.

You don't have to tell them the particulars of why you need off that day, and they don't really have much of a place to be asking you about it. Just apply for the job as planned, and if it does work out then whenever you're discussing hours just mention you have a prior engagement on that day and you'll need to be off.

In the interview they'll usually ask you If you have any holidays or anything arranged and say that you do have a day where you are meeting up with some people from Japan and unfortunately theres no other time it can be arranged Depending on the person interviewing you it could even be a bonus in their eyes since it humanises you and brings up a point of conversation. In my experience your more likely to get that kind of job if you make a connection to the person who is interviewing you.

Basicaly what I'm trying to say is just act on your instincts based on the character and personality of the person interviewing you and I wish you the best of luck in what will hopefully become your new job!
