You see this is exactly why I hate WoW and why I'll hate The Old Republic, it's taking these brilliant stories and taking away my chance to play them, if you feel the need to make an MMO fine, but make a core game for the fans that supported you until you rerached this point, is that too much to ask?

I wonder if they couldn't integrate a Warcraft 4 and World of Warcraft - regional battles deciding ownership of wilderness areas, shared hero units between the two games, special loot from winning battles, new battlegrounds where an RTS player could act as a commander for lots of WoW players... there are quite a few interesting possibilities, honestly.

Grudge? Nah, the only grudge I hold is against Blizzard for taking a nose-dive in their writing as of late. The only thing I can say about you is that I think it's borderline cute, the way you defend Blizzard in any and every one of threads like these.

Warcraft 2's writing I can't really speak about, that's the reason I asked to be corrected if I were wrong. Warcraft 3 however, I can only question whether you haven't recently played it yourself or you simply can't tell. I mean seriously, by saying Blizzard's writing has been consistently the same over the past few years, you're telling me this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC4Jgtyql1s] is on equal footing to this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2vm-QjK2xQ]. That's something I'm not really willing to argue.
I counter with this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCr7y4SLhck]. Or, perhaps, all of the in-game cutscenes that were just as cheesy as that WoW one you link before?

WC3 is one of my favorite games of all time. I enjoy the story, and I think it's a cool tale. But Blizzard's writing and dialogue has never been good. For me, it's Narm Charm.

And the WC series is one of my favorites, and I'm particularly interested in massively multiplayer storytelling and how it interweves with a potentially ongoing franchise. I like discussing it.... so I will. :p

I don't see what point you're trying to make with those two. The cinematic contains 2 lines of dialogue that are not anywhere as cheesy (which they are, at least a little, I'm perfectly willing to grant you that) as any one thing uttered in the horrible piece of tripe I linked. Hell, I'll say this right now, you can't find enough parts of the Warcraft 3 in-game cinematics and combine them all into one piece to make the end product as plain cheesy, never mind badly written, as that was.

I really don't get why you keep on saying the writing's never been good. Sounds just like an excuse to pass Blizzard's current work as... passable, but whatever. You know what, this weekend I'm going to replay Warcraft 3 and the expansion again just to make sure.
And I think you're blinded by nostalgia. As someone who loves Warcraft 3, I cannot play that game with a (non fan) in the room with me and not feel kind of embarrassed at the dialogue.

Blizzard's games are about gameplay. If I wanted writing > gameplay, I'd play something by BioWare.

Blizzard seems content to allow WoW, the Paperback books and Manga to drive the storyline...I don't think we'd *need* a Warcraft IV to introduce a new chapter.

Maybe if they reworked the Warcraft III platform to sort of 'update' it for 2011?

The Humans become the "Grand Alliance" faction with Dwarves and Gnomes.
The Night Elves become the "Shadow-Alliance-Arroooo-Raar" faction with Draenei and Worgen.
The Orcs become the "Horde" faction with more Tauren, Trolls and Goblins.
The Undead become the "Forsaken" faction with those damned Blood Elves along for the ride.

And then you'd toss in two or three more factions for the 'evil' groupings. The Legion, the Scourge, the Old Gods, Elemental Lords, whatever.

Hey, why not?
Well, most of these already fit in well into how they were implemented in WC3. WC3 Humans were made up of most of the Alliance races, the same with WC3 Orcs and WoW's Horde.

The universe is well set up for an RTS campaign at the moment anyway. Of the Horde's only two diplomatically-minded leaders, one stepped down to give his post to a war-hungry monkey... who then killed the other one.

The trolls are ready to leave the Horde altogether, or at least stage a coup.

The Forsaken have spent the last two expansion packs devolving into cartoonish villainy, and the Blood Elves' only connection to the Horde is poorly-placed faith in Sylvannas.

Worgen have thrown their lot in with the Night Elves, and each are only in the Alliance to protect themselves.

Our space-catholics on the alliance side don't really fit into the big picture at all, though. Unless WC4 is going to be about the burning legion again, Sargeras is still out there.

You want Warcraft 4 ?
Get in line like the rest of us :-(
WOW pretty much killed the story of W3 and Frozen throne. A real shame because that story was great and I was really looking forward to see an epic conclusion.
But no... we got a shitty one, and yeah, many WOW players don't even know who is Arthas or ayone from W3.
I would be great if they decleared the whole WOW non-cannon and just continued where Frozen throne left.

Meanwhile, I'm just sitting here thinking: "Can John Funk really not take a stance against Blizzard on anything?".

Of course the statement was wrong, lots of great characters absolutely did not die after having achieved nothing since their last appearances to a crew of adventurers guided by quest givers. Of course all of the villains had an influence (read: did something) in the universe before falling over to said adventurers. Of course lots of great new characters were introduced. Of course they have the writers to provide a story that could capitalize on whatever there is to do in a hypothetical WC4, as witnessed by all the recent brilliant writing they've been doing lately. Of course.

How wrong I was to not see the excellence of WoW's storytelling and such.

You quoted nothing. Even if you had, it wouldn't change what you've said, that basically, the world does not need any more RTS games.

EDIT: Your post has "unintended sarcasm" written all over it if this is not true. Which is why I assumed what I did.
The world does not need anymore blizzard RTS games. They are far over rated and outdated.

Ah yes, the Blizzard topic. I expect by now the usual cast of people on a personal crusade against Blizzard will have arrived... yep, there they are, and there's Funk to do battle with them as he often does, though by this point I suspect the man must be a masochist since there's little other explanation I can find for why he still bothers.

As for Warcraft 4, it'll happen eventually just don't hold your breath. Too big of an opportunity to let go by, but with WOW still at the peak of its success it would seem out of place to be releasing another Warcraft project.

And for those complaining about the story; it's still there. Besides, Arthas was a *****. Why does everyone like him? He only showed up in Warcraft 3 and everyone acts like he's the series focal point. Screw him, I'm glad the guys dead so we might have the chance to getting back to the real Warcraft hallmarks like Turalyon or Deathwing. Or if that's not feasible then expanding the story.

Too many people who've only played Warcraft 3 forget just how much of a shake-up that game was to the already established story, and now they're reacting much like the Warcraft 1 and 2 fans did to WOW's continued shake-upening of the story.

Regardless, there will one day be a Warcraft 4... and I'll bet ya'll in this topic will hate it with a vengeance. Hopefully I'll still be following gaming whenever that happens so I can bask in the cynical hilarity of it all!

Wow is intended to be warcraft 4 from my understanding :S

Unless they intend to redo all the lore in RTS format. That wouldn't make any sense to me. It would sell though.

I'd murder the children of a thousand worlds to play The Forsaken as a faction in an RTS War4 title.

You could even keep the current Lore, just adapting it, like having a place to hire Neutral "would-be-heroes-and-adventurers" (aka the Players of WoW) as more expensive units with unique abilities.

Illidan never died. There were voice clips recorded for the final scene of TFT to indicate this, but they weren't in the final version of the game (Though you can still find them in the game's MPQ files, I believe).
MPQ files that never made it into the game aren't canon, though. If they're not there, then they don't factor in.

But in any case, it makes zero sense that Illidan should be left alive. Sure, we never actually see him die.
We see him broken, battered, and (based on the screen-slashing) with a massive cut from crotch to neck.

He's surrounded by the forces of Arthas; his own armies already beaten.

I do not see anything that would indicate Arthas letting him live.
It simply doesn't make sense.

Just because we don't actually see it, doesn't mean we can't piece it together ourselves.

How many movies have we watched where the scenery changes to a tree with a bunch of white birds, followed by a gunshot and the birds taking off?

We all know what happened, even though we didn't see it.

I've been saying this for quite some time now. As popular as WoW is, it's still not satisfying the itch I've had for some true Warcraft.
