Ok, here's the deal.

I got the game, and my friend suggested we make a multiplayer server to play on. My laptop has a better hard drive and RAM, so he figured I should do it.

So I tried. I followed a tutorial, word for word, except I ran into a problem. One of the things I'm supposed to do requires a PURCHASED version of a program the tutorial told me to download for free.

Could someone here, who happens to run their own server, explain to me what to do?

What's the name of the program?
Er...Simple Port Forwarding.
Eh..? You have to forward some ports for a Minecraft server work off of a router. Default port is 25565, so you'll have to forward the port from then on out. Try this tut [http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=12559].

If it's just one port, all it usually takes is to change a couple of settings in your router.

However, seeing as most people don't have fixed external IP addresses, every time their internet connection fails (dropout, or their ISP resets the connection for maintenance, etc), other people have to connect to a different number.

You shouldn't have to pay for anything except Minecraft itself.

We have had a server up for months now with no problems. The only somewhat tricky part is forwarding the right ports.
