A while ago, I started thinking about what if things had gone a bit differently. What if I had taken the opposite choice in my dilemma almost 3 years ago?

I'm referring to my decision to drop out of high school.

When I was a little over 14, I began high school and while I didn't want it to end up as a cliche story of "Nerd get's bullied" it indeed did turn out that way. Almost everyday from the very start, I was ridiculed, beaten, psychologically tormented and didn't have a single friend.

So, after about 5 months of putting up with that shit, I left. I just said "Fuck it" and got the hell out of there.

I only recently began to question my decision and wonder if it was the right thing to do.

Though, I will always stand by my decision to leave as I couldn't cope with what was going on on a daily basis, but I can't help but wonder if overall I made the wrong decision.

So my question is to you drop outs; Do you think you made the right choice to leave?

This is a question aimed at any and all high school or college drop outs who may be here on the Escapist. Your age doesn't matter, what year you dropped out doesn't matter. Only that you indeed did decide to quit school in either high school or College.

Also, even if you didn't drop out, feel free to comment on the subject itself.

Julian, get your ass back to school or I'll come over there and kick it.

It's not worth it. I know people that have dropped out, the only ones that really made the right choice are those who simply aren't school oriented and do badly in class. I have the feeling you're not like them, go back.

I hated high school. Didn't help that I had to go to four of them, but getting my GED was the best thing I could have done. College is a much better experience overall, you should just take the test, get the certificate, and move on to bigger and better things. (seriously, I could've passed the test in the 8th grade, it was that easy!)

You'll never gain a fetish for masochism.

Oh! and a hardened personality

Hey, I'm coming to Chicago in a few weeks, so you won't come down here :D

Seriously though, I am going to college, so I'm not just completely quitting school altogether.

How obviously nerdy are you?
I'm fairly nerdy but you probably wouldn't guess if you looked at me.

I didn't drop out, and I'm glad I didn't.
Dropping out gains you nothing, and costs you so much more.

My dad was a social worker, the guy who helps people get back on their feet and into jobs. He encountered adults who never got high school diplomas, and their lives were far from great. The fact that they needed social assistance because they couldn't get a job because they didn't have an education was a big part of it.

There is no reason to not get your HS diploma.
Least ways: there isn't one that I've heard that was any good.

Ever person who has any glimpse of career goals owes it to themselves to get the HS diploma.
Not everyone has to get a B.A., or a Masters, or a PHD...but a GED? Yeah. You need that.

Well if living low-class is your thing, then go for it. If you're making money without a high school certificate then thats great, you beat the system!

Actually, I was bullied a lot at school and now I'm a massive sadist. Score! :D
This is here, I say: "I was kidding..."

But, hey! Now you've got another source for pleasure. Indeed a score! :3

If you want you can always take some sort of test that gives you a high-school diploma without the high school.

I am not a drop-out but I find bullying to be higly disgusting.
The school authority figures allowing scum to make others miserable is enraging!

Did you go to a teacher about the bullying?
Having been bullied when I was younger, I feel this course of action doesn't work. When I was a kid, I got bullied for being fat, so I'd get pissed off and lash out. I'd then get in trouble for responding to abuse and everyone else involved would get off.

In fact, the school then decided I had "anger management issues" and put me in special classes for 2 years. So I learned to colour in pretty things instead of what a paedophile is, like everyone is. Of course, when my parents confronted the headteacher, after about a month of these classes and me still being bullied, she just said "Oh, there's no bullying in our school".

So I haven't had good experiences with the "Tell a teacher" option.
