So I recently just went through To The Moon for a second time, all in a span of a short amount of time. For those who haven't "played it", I would call it a 3 hour interactive movie. It's $10 on Steam or GOG, which I feel is worth the price for the experience. I definitely recommend it for the story and atmosphere that it gives. There will be major spoilers from here on out, and I urge you to experience it, and not get spoiled. Anyways...

The first time I went through To The Moon, my biggest complaint was that there wasn't any gameplay. That you walked around and clicked stuff till you could do the short puzzle to get to the next part. After going through it again in a much shorter time period, I found it to be necessary. Having to walk around and then take time to do a puzzle helped with the atmosphere. You get to a part that was sad, and you keep that feeling during the puzzle, wondering what the next memory is, since going backwards, you know that certain event has yet to occur. It's not meant to be a game, but more of an interactive experience, and it does that really well.

To The Moon invokes a number of different emotions from the person experiencing it, and has a number of different atmospheres. Before even diving into the memories, you get a creepy feeling from seeing all the different paper rabbits in the room and the lighthouse. You get sad moments such as Johnny sitting next to his wife's grave mourning, and later finding out he had suppressed memories of his Brother Joey, who died from getting run over from his Mothers car. The mood changes from each memory, from a happy scene of Johnny and River riding horses, to a more serious scene next to find out why that was going on.

The really great things are the themes presented. The relationship of River and Johnny is really fascinating the whole time. What seems to be a happy marriage shows various troubles at times, and that there was difficulties before. Even more is that the original reason for Johnny asking River out was for very selfish reasons, as Johnny wants to date someone Unique to stand out from the crowd. While selfish at first, at that point we know that it turns out to become something beautiful.

The biggest thing is the end. River was the reason for how things turned out, and the two doctors figure out that if they are to give Johnny's dying wish, they must remove her from his life. This presents a creepy tone, as Neil doesn't want to do it, and is trying to get to Eva to stop her from it. We get a scene where two people who are just black fuzz pull her away, which for me was really uncomfortable because of the implication of bullying. Even with Eva saving Joey, Neil doesn't like what happened.

The last short bit shows the change of memories, with everything working out, as both Johnny and River go to the moon, and still get married, with things being better than before. The scene where they grab each others hands while in the shuttle with Johnny's life slowly fading sent chills down my spine. In the end, everything works out, with Eva and Neil going to their next assignment, but we find out that Neil has a disease.

Currently they are going to release a game November 7th called A Bird Story, which will be about the person who will be the patient for the second story with Eva and Neil.

To The Moon was great, and there is so much more I could discuss about. I look forward to the next story, and hope it's even better than To The Moon.

One thing I would like to see is the exploration of the good and bad from changing memories. We know that despite the memories changing, the person still experienced what they did, so you get two stories about the same person. While Eva was right in this story, it would be interesting to have the next story turn the opposite way. Show that sometimes trying to make the persons dreams come true in their memories can come with a price. Maybe their dream came true, but overall, the more important things for them didn't turn out, and maybe the person suffered for it.

So Escapist, what are your thoughts?

I thought it was a fantastic game. I played it around the time Thomas Was Alone was released so my opinion of it kind of goes that as great as it is, Thomas Was Alone left a better impression on me. But it is worth the money, Thomas Was Alone as well. Gone Home, which came out near that time, isn't worth the money.

I loved just about everything about To The Moon besides the wacky amnesia origin and the limitations of the game engine. They're not terrible flaws: I know the amnesia Johnny gets had to be tied to the death of Joey and the meeting of River somehow, and I realize that some of To The Moon's charm is in its pixelated RPG Maker engine. But I mean just about *everything* hit a good spot with me, and that rarely happens.

Another thing I remember is that big too srs 4 me moment in the hospital when River is diagnosed with autism. I can't think of anything that came out of that little arc at all besides giving River leeway to do her "I'm so quirky and scatter-brained!" moments. It didn't sit with me right, I'd prefer if they'd have left it out.

The whole personality disorder I think worked overall, but it was a bit downplayed at the same time. If the game was meant to only be about River, and that's all we had about her, then I would be mad, but this was focused on Johnny, so I was fine with it.

It presents us with why she was that way, and tells us why their relationship was bumpy at times. I really think it helped with the theme of one wanting to stand out, while one wanting to be part of the crowd. The nice thing was the scene was short, and it was balanced out well with the other stuff.

I have Thomas Was Alone from my PS Plus membership. Need to get to that at some point.

I thought To the Moon, was a great story, but a little lacking in gameplay. You kinda just walk around and find stuff to unlock the next puzzle to move forward, and the puzzles really aren't too challenging. However, I feel the fantastic writing more than makes up for it. The premise is a unique take on virtual reality, and the characters are very well written and likeable. I think everyone should at least try it, especially since it's only $10.

I'm looking forward to the sequel, hopefully it will measure up to the first!

In other words, ya I agree OP!

It's a lot like The Stanley Parable in that the gameplay is about 2% of its value, the soundtrack is about 3%, and the narration is 95%. But whereas I wasn't a huge fan of The Stanley Parable -- not that the narration wasn't mindblowingly great or the concept was well-handled, because they were -- I really, really liked Thomas Was Alone.

I'm tempted to reinstall Thomas Was Alone now, but I can't play past when everyone first meets because I hate what happens next.

Hoo, glad I stumbled upon this, I completely forgot about Bird Story.
I absolutely loved To The Moon. That game made me cry like a wee babby and I loved it for that. It holds a really special place in my heart, yes it does. I actually wanted to cosplay the doctors with my sister but our skin tones and hair colors, *she* looks more like Dr. Watts and *I* look more like Dr. Rosalene. I'm game for genderbent cosplay but those two look too much like regular scientists for genderbent to work.
Anyhow.
I was extremely excited for more Freebird games hot of the heels of To The Moon but I'm not particularly excited for Bird Story.
I don't know, I guess it's been a while but I expect to enjoy it, hopefully cry some more, I like it when fiction elicits tears from me.

Oh, and as long as we're talking about Thomas Was Alone.
Here's the thing, I understand that a lot of people like it but I'm not quite understanding why. I'm not being all condescending "I fail to see why it's so great", I just don't get the same reaction I guess everyone else does, and I want to. It's a good game, I get it, I *understand* why people like it while at at the same time... not. I don't know, maybe it's been a while, maybe I hyped myself up for it too much but there's something in Thomas Was Alone that I think I just don't *get*.

I was reading stuff about Bird Story on their website. Apparently there will be no talking in the game, and no text. So the whole story will be told by visuals and music. If To The Moon is any indicator, I feel they can do a great job. The scene when River and Johnny first met was so well done between the visuals and the music, as well as the stuff when seeing the new memories. I'll definitely have to get the game and play it.

I also after agree about Crying. There were many beautiful moments in the story.
