Obviously there will be wildly differing opinions on this, but that's what makes it interesting! Seeing what other people equate as greatness provides a lot of insight into their own character. For that reason, I'm hoping there won't be many joke responses, but I'm not stupid, so I guess the joke responses can provide insight too. :/

For me, it would probably have to be Jesus. Now before you roll your eyes, know that I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN. I'm agnostic; I'm not sure God exists or Jesus was actually the messiah or if we get reincarnated when we die. But Jesus was an advocate for peace, love, and understanding in a time when you'd be hard-pressed to find those things. It's true that we only have the bible to go on and that historians debate whether Jesus ever even existed, but even if the miracles and stuff is bull, if Jesus was even half the man he was in the Bible, he's still the greatest man I think who ever lived. Not just for promoting peace and understanding, but also for getting people to listen to him and believe in him. A lot of people can claim one or the other, but rarely both, and they usually don't kick off what will become the biggest religion in the world. Now before you bring up countless tales of Christians who are awful people, I'm not talking about them, just Jesus. He was a great man, and the people who ACTUALLY follow his lessons are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

It's just the way I look at it. I don't even fully agree with everything Jesus preached; I think "turn the other cheek" is often a great way to get yourself taken advantage of and abused. But I don't think anyone, of any religion (except perhaps Satanism?), would disagree with the moral values Jesus promoted.

Bring on the mocking!

Not going to mock you, just going to say, that I doubt he was real, and even if he was, he wasn't the first or the last person to promote most of those ideas.

In my opinion it's either Shakespeare (I'm an English student, so, no, I am not biased :p )or Leonardo Da Vinci. Both made colossal contributions to society. It's just my opinion though, no need to tell me I'm wrong :)

George Bush Jr, when Obama was found responsible for the world trade centre attacks back in the 80s, Bush was the first to retaliate against Obama. He rounded up the remnants of Genghis Khan's old horde and rode with them against Obama. He defeated Obama and gave the Mongols a glorious victory they had not seen since Genghis Khan died 60 years earlier in New Jersey.

A lot of people would say that was a trivial moment in history, but without the support of the Mongol horde, America would never have won WW2, George Bush saved the world from WW2.
Indeed.

OT: I have no idea. I like a lot of people.

Billy Joel.

Great musician, songwriter, and an all around nice guy. Funny, too.

Either him or Christopher Hitchens. Or maybe George Carlin.

Gah, don't make me pick.

Jesus...what I can't think the Son of God is the greatest person ever lived!? He saved lives and fought evil, pretty much a rolemodel for me.

Okay enough of me and my religion.

But if I had to choose seconds it would be Leonardo Da Vinci since I love how he made an impression on the world of art...also Assassins Creed, what I had to say it. :D

It's really a tough decision. But I think I'll just stick with Rowan Atkinson.
Or someone who selflessly saved thousands of innocent lives, whatever.

Isaac Asimov is fairly high up on my list, he made good stories & lots of them. Alfred Nobel was also pretty good for seeing the error of his ways, along with discovering a whole load of things. Also, Nicolo Tesla should probably be mentioned...he wanted to give free electricity to everyone.

I'm gonna have to go with Jesus. Savior or not he's pretty much shaped the course of history as we know it. And despite what some raving escapists might argue, I would say it was for the better. Jesus would be pissed though if he saw the state of Christianity today.

anyone who was able to decimate a roman legion will be there... it takes some doing to kill a lean mean roman war machine

also Napoleon:from an italian speaking background to emperor of France (and being a cannon regiment captain in between) that takes some skillful political maneuvering

Jonas Salk has to be up there. It's sad I didn't even know he had a Holiday tell I looked him up and it was 6 days ago. For those who don't know he developed the Polio vaccine.

I had a pretty big Bro-crush on Leo Da Vinci. Almost enough to get a quote of his tattooed on my body.

Or Buddha. He seemed like a chill guy to hang out with.
