You're school is a terrible place. We had fights (I actually walked over one in my freshman year, two girls fighting on the floor, I didn't notice until I was already past 'em), but no shootings on campus, no burnings, or stabbings. LOTS of mercury spills though. Lots, and LOTS. Especially my senior year. Was kind of hilarious.
Mercury? Cool! But just to point out, the stuff is essentially harmless (toxicity wise) unless you ingest it or bathe in it. Any and all fuss that was generated because of it was sadly wasted :(

Only one majorly bad thing ever happened at my old school when I was there, and that was a drugs bust. The best part is it wasn't even anything serious. It was weed, nothing more. However, a ton of kids got suspended temporarily for possession and four kids got expelled for dealing, and the police were called in. Bear in mind this was a British grammar school...

To be fair though, it did help me out. Normally I wouldn't have given a damn if I knew a dealer, because it was only weed (the one illegal drug I actually agree should be made legal...). However, one of the dealers, I found out, happened to be this kid who had bullied me for years. So I grassed him up and he ended up expelled and getting a criminal record for drug dealing. Karma came and bit him on the ass that day ;D.

Of course, this was all while at school. Don't get me started on the sort of things that have happened during my two and a half years at university. Protests, student-newspaper censorship, the killing of Meredith Kercher (yeah, any of you heard of Amanda Knox? The girl she allegedly killed went to my university...), buildings being taken over, corruption in student politics... the works :p.

A friend of mine who saw the event said that her class was interrupted by screaming that wouldn't stop, and they looked out into the hall and saw a student on fire with black smoke going everywhere.
Fuck yeah Time to make me some marshmellows

When i went to school, i was quite happy to know that i wouldnt be in danger of getting fucking killed... And i didnt see any reason to set myself on fire either, no matter how bad it was...

That being said, i feel sorry for him.. Its really sad actually...

well, it was before i got there, but a science teacher from my first high school tried to kill a bunch of people by opening all the valves on the bunsen (spelling?) burners and leaving both doors to the room wide open. there was some event (think it was graduation, but i cant remember the story completely) that evening, and since school was closed that during the day, he had several hours to let the gas spread. fortunately, the resource officer was there and smelled something funny (good god, thats one dark unintended pun...damn), and found the source.

totally leaving out some details, but its been forever since i had heard or even thought about it. forgot whether he wanted to off himself with it as well or if there was a bomb or other timed device to ignite it. either way, the plan got shut down, and its a pretty good bet that he's in a psychiatric institute somewhere.

Ten years back, when I was in high school, we all got put on lockdown because someone pissed in someone else's gas tank. I'm serious. Someone saw "something suspicious" (guy pissing in another guy's tank, or rather, the guy standing at the back of the truck, looking around), and the school went onto lockdown. During that time, they found a different car in the parking lot on the OTHER side of campus, that had a tazer, a potato gun, and a bow-n-arrow set. Though none of those were illegal to bring onto campus and left inside the car, they still arrested the poor kid and tried to get him expelled.

The city paid beautifully for that.

Oh! Thought of something that did happen at school.

The Westboro Baptists happened.
Some guy, a few years prior, killed himself because a bunch of homophobic idiots kept harassing him. His sister, being a reasonable human being, decided to start a club for gays and gay supporters so that in the future, students being bullied would have a place to go.
The WBC apparantley didn't like this.

They spent thousands of dollars in travel costs, countless hours of planning, and organizing. They got to stand out on a corner that wasn't even visible from the road, or the buses, for half an hour.

And what came of their visit? The whole school rallied to support the Gay Straight Alliance club, and they raised several hundred dollars for their club selling anti-hate buttons.

Also, I would just like to add, personally, I feel that God was watching over us the day of their protest. It poured rain on them.[/i]

My art teacher was arrested for having sex with a minor using a foreign object. Nothing else really because my school was cleaned up quite a bit a few years prior to my joining. Fights, drugs, and students with lots of guns. There was a shit load of gang crap there for a number of years.

During my high school years, we had two bomb threats, three fires randomly started in lockers, several gay kids beaten severely (one almost to death), and a car accident where it's very likely that the people were actually TRYING to run the guy over. And before you ask, no, I'm not American, I come from a smalltown in Canada.

Damn, that's one hell of a day. People have brought drugs into my school. And I think one kid had to be taken to a hospital because he had overdosed. And there are the occasional fights that rarely last that long.

Although I have also thought about lighting myself on fire at school. Not in the "I want to die" way, but in a prankish sort of way. Find that stuff that burns "cold" (doesn't actually burn what its on), wear some fireprook clothes, then light myself up and walk down the hallways. The cafeteria has the big long window-wall that goes along this one really long hallway. So essentially do this while a lunch is going on then just go down the bordering hallway. Whether I would run screaming or walk calmly I never figured out. Couldn't decide which would be more hilarious. Main reason that I never did is because I'm sure that I would be in some deep-shit. And not just with the school to, I'm sure that some other authorities wouldn't take kindly to something like this. And I'd probably have to had my mind checked out make sure I'm not insane ("I swear it was just some random idea I had while bored and walking down a hallway.")

Hope the one kid is okay. I hear burns hurt something fierce.

EDIT: also, once in the boys locker room there was a horrible smell of semen and a rock hard sock in the corner...
You have no idea how much I laughed at this. Thank you, you just made my day.
OT:One time someone made a bomb threat (on the day of some big test, dumb shit) and we had a lockdown. Then the cops came and talked to us about how "I'm gonna catch that little sh-, I'm gonna catch the perpretrator and put his as-, I'm gonna put him away. The last ime this happened I got the bast-, perpetrator expled from public schools." Ever heard a cop try to not swear? It's hilarious.
Also one time a mentaly challenged person showed up on school grounds with a toy gun(like an hour of lock down.)
And most recently a student teacher decided to put his students through a simulation of racial bias (my town is very white btw.) He used several racist comments (so I've heard.) and then someone reported him. He got fired then left a letter threatening violence against himself and his family. So we had a huge lockdown that ended with the principle damn near screaming for everyone involved in after school activities to get out of the building. I don't think they've found the student teacher yet.

well there was the case at my school where...well I'll explain it chronologically.
kid says he has foot fetish.
everyone made fun of him.
someone said to a girl "you better show him you feet or he will shot you in the face"
said girl was black.
someone else misheard the story and took it seriously.
rumors spread about the racist-genocidal-foot-pervert who was going to shoot-up the school.
cue everyone in the school freaking out and 2/3 of students taking the day off and telling their parents "the swat team is here and somethings going down"...
I wish I was making that up.

Wait, do you go to public school? Drugs in a high schools are like guns in the military. My guidance councilor admits that we have a drug problem ("but you know what? There are drugs everywhere" that her quote). I swear 1st day of school (as a freshman) I'm pretty sure I saw drugs being sold. I'm pretty sure more than 50% of the school has tried or smokes pot.

My junior high had the first bomb threat in the district. The kid said he had a bomb in his locker as a joke (it was a dare I guess) and since his locker was next to mine, mine also got searched and a bunch of my stuff got wrecked. In high school some kid brought a gun, got expelled, went to alternative school, dropped out, and is now in prison for beating his pregnant girlfriend. Occasional bomb threats from smart asses who didn't want to take an exam. We had occasional drug busts. The principal would get on the PA system and say "attention: all teachers must keep students in the classrooms. The dogs are in the building." I guess the dogs were super aggressive so they needed to keep kids out of the halls. And now for a blast from the past. When my mom was in high school (same one my brother and I graduated from) there was a race riot and a kid got stabbed.

It all sounds pretty bad, but I never had any issues at the school and never felt in danger. My brother just graduated this past year and he feels the same about it. I also attribute these things for being the reason I'm not unbelievably paranoid whenever I walk outside at night, like the rest of my friends who went to more normal schools.

Edit: I don't know why, but I want to add/clarify something a bit about my hometown. There is a gang presence. They came down from Chicago for some unknown reason (the town is surrounded by corn for fucks sake) and decided it was a good place to stay. The ones I know about for sure are Gangsters Disciples and Latin Kings, but I guess there are a few more around. Fortunately, none of this ever really comes into the schools. I don't know how, but the administration is able to gang issues out and does a decent job of it. It's all a mystery to me.

That is intense. I am a bit disappointed with the lack of details surrounding the reasons for the fire in that news article. I have no idea if I can think of anything that comes close to matching that. The only thing that I can think of is when about 10,000 crickets were released into the school. We had to go home because they couldn't serve lunch since the crickets got into the kitchen and therefore made it unsanitary.
