Well, today's popular music scene is just plain terrible. That's pretty much a well-known fact these days. However, every so often someone states to me that, "Aw no bro, so and so is still putting out really good stuff! He always has!"

Well, i disagree with that. Not only do I not like what said artist is putting out now, but i don't like stuff he did in his/her "prime." So now I ask who you believe to be an overrated musician; now or from the past.

Except for The Beatles. They are the greatest band of all time. Period.

First, you might want to edit out that last line, it removes the "Unbiased" sticker from your post. :3

Second, unless someone posts before me, that's two ponies in a row. :D

Third, I think you answered your own question in your opening statement. ;)

Every band/singer they play on those top 30 radio stations.

I'll say Lady Gaga. I've got nothing against her, but in all honesty I don't understand why people like her music.

Every pop star ever, not all of them are horrible. Some of the horrible ones have a few good songs, but most people i've met act like Jesus himself came down and gave them their auto tuned voices.

Hm, I guess three ponies in a row would have been a stretch, but in the mean time, if you're really trying to pick a fight the way you are, one (me) could argue that Nickleback has been re-writing the same thing so many times with such slight variations that every album will end up having one song that stands out from all the others, but that's not to say it's still any good.

I feel as though I'll regret this, better change my icon...something with Rainbowdash...

Nearly everything from the last decade. And every rap "artist" ever. And nearly everything that appears on any kind of "Top 40" list.

I feel bad for today's youth. Popular music these days all just sound the same. It's like people forgot what good music was.

The beatles. They are good, but they are not as timeless as everyone seems to think.

Also, Elvis.

Aye, it pains me to hear my little brothers and sister listening to music about sex and violence as if music justifies these things.

I don't know, Creed gives them a run for their money. If only we could make some sort of NickleCreed hybrid.

Haters gonna hate.

1.) Create "who is overrated thread"
2.) Claim your favorite band cannot be considered overrated
3.) ???
4.) Popcorn

I dunno, I kind of like a few of Nickelback's songs; that is not to say however, that they're the best ever, but I haven't actually heard anyone say that. I always hear that they're extremely overrated yet I don't know anyone who loves them.

I'm sure there was no bad music "back in the day". Ever. It was all amazing.

I second this.
I don't really care about overrated in a popularity sense - but it really gets to me when people advocate her as some sort of postmodern self-reflective semi-depricative god-artist.
She is, on an artistic and technical musical level, miles beyond most popular music - but she isn't 'deep' or 'edgy'. Although, on that note, I don't actually think that she is that pretentious, its just her fans that tout her as some sort of Coltrane-esque musical/philosophical savant.

Kanye, really? If anything, since the whole 'public image suicide' thing he's become positively underrated and occasionally contemptuously dismissed.
Beforehand - yes. I agree that he was overrated.

I might get some weird looks for this one, but I'm going to have to say that Iron Maiden are a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong - Iron Maiden's good songs are among the best that 80's metal had to offer; however, this does not excuse the fact that most of their albums are nothing but filler peppered with occasional flashes of brilliance.

I also thought Arcade Fire's recent album, "The Suburbs", was overrated (why was this level of praise not bestowed upon "Funeral", an album that was actually brilliant and worthy of album of the year), and I absolutely despise Animal Collective, and cannot for the life of me understand what critics see in them.

Actually when it comes to today's popular music scene, Lady Gaga is one of the best out there. She's not great by any means, but she's a lot better than some of her contemporaries in the genre.

IMO:

Rap is overrated
Screamer (metal music with vocals that have no pitch) is very overrated (amongst the metal community particularly)

As for individual artists...

Katy Perry, Ke$sha, Kanye West (and other rap artists I don't know but have heard)

I'd put Justin Bieber in a totally different category since he's really targeted towards a younger female audience. (not myself). I'm sticking with people people my age (21) are listening to.
