Who really cares? The Beatles aren't the greatest band of all time either, the best band ever is Nickelback.
Can of worms, man, although your point should be taken.

As for who's overrated? Lady Gaga hit it pretty recently (Born This Way was a mess), Katy Perry always was, pretty much every pop singer is sliding downhill and pretty much everything hipsters like I find to be boring and/or obnoxious.

Although it's none too fair of me to start complaining about pop singers sliding downhill, as the only pop song I really like right now is "Rolling In The Deep" by Adele. :S

I just cannot understand why people (i.e., mostly hipsters) like that band. Well... I can appreciate the unique instrumentation characteristic of the band however the campfire songs laid over are grating at best. Surreal lyrics don't save it for me (despite my love of the surreal). Maybe that band is too deep for me. Then again, I listen to this:

Then why on Earth did you keep sending me videos of them? :S

Yeah rap is bad, sure auto-tuning is horrible. But I think the biggest travesty going on right now is what the industry is doing to "country" music. Rather than being about death, the hardship of life, poverty, or something... even remotely interesting, country music today is about soccer moms and drinking beer.

So... pretty much the genre of "country". I know its never good to generalize, but a friend of mine listens to all that modern country... gawd.

I feel like if I made all the people who say all artist from a certain genre is bad they would find a song they actually liked.

OT: 311 and Led Zepplin. Don't get me wrong I love Black Dog and Immigrant Song but they are mega overrated
And the worst part about it, is that I don't even consider the songs they play their absolute best. Put Heartbreaker, Moby Dick, and Good Times, Bad Times on, you inanimate radio station!

It's as if someone put The Doors and early era Pink Floyd into a blender, I dig it man.

I really, really hate all of Kesha's music. But, I don't matter as I'm not her target audience. It seems like there is no music targeted at me... Everything on the radio makes me turn off the radio.
Than get out your hoody and lensless glasses and look up some indie stuff...

OT: Everything is overrated now a days... the last truly great band to make it on the radio was Nirvana... but there is some good indie stuff like Vampire Weekend...

Nearly everything from the last decade.
I have half a mind to think you're trolling. There's a plethora of good artists from today. Music's quality and the time it was made in are about as relatable as a turkey sandwich and the Andromeda Galaxy.

I also thought Arcade Fire's recent album, "The Suburbs", was overrated (why was this level of praise not bestowed upon "Funeral", an album that was actually brilliant and worthy of album of the year).
I love you.

I'm gonna say Kanye West. I've listened to some of his songs and he just doesn't wow me.

All of them! Any music post-2000 has been pretty god-fucking-awful if it isn't dance music. And that includes bands of olde too, everything is shit anymore.
Really? Everything is shit? What about people still composing orchestral scores? Or playing improvisational jazz? I will agree that most everything on the radio is terrible, but come on bro. Not everything is terrible. Give the Gorillaz a chance, the Black Keys? Wolfmother? Brand New? The Shins? Manchester Orchestra? The Features? My Morning Jacket? Give these bands 30 seconds on iTunes, maybe it'll change your mind. You shouldn't generalize the entire spectrum of music just because it has the audacity to be released after 2000.

It's not all bad, popular stuff...I quite like Tinie Tempah, Labrinth and Mr Hudson among others. You may just have to check out some more British stuff.

However, one group I really can't understand the popularity of is Bliss 'N' Esso. I'm from Australia, and people over here act like they're amazing. I just can't see them as anything but average, myself.

Oh yeah, and Kesha. I don't know if she's rated at all, but if she is it's overrated. Absolutely terrible, in my opinion.

Pretty much every single pop group /idol/whatever that has been out in the last 3/4 years. Especially with this autotune bollocks I keep having to be forced to hear when I get lifts from work.

I won't say anything about the likes of Metal and other genre's because I don't actively listen to them, so I feel it would be a tad unfair for me to judge.

I will however talk shit about my beloved trance and progressive based on the complete shit I have heard from a few trance livesets I have heard from 2010 and 2011. How the hell did get from clubby to shitty?

Actually when it comes to today's popular music scene, Lady Gaga is one of the best out there. She's not great by any means, but she's a lot better than some of her contemporaries in the genre.

IMO:

Rap is overrated
Screamer (metal music with vocals that have no pitch) is very overrated (amongst the metal community particularly)

As for individual artists...

Katy Perry, Ke$sha, Kanye West (and other rap artists I don't know but have heard)

I'd put Justin Bieber in a totally different category since he's really targeted towards a younger female audience. (not myself). I'm sticking with people people my age (21) are listening to.

I'm glad to see that someone actually added "IMO", because this IS a very subjective distinction, and in my expirience people often end up being pretty rude to people who like the genre that they don't themselves. And personally, for example, I think there's a lot of great hiphop out there, and I'll even be as rude as to say that some people in that genre (not in any way a majority, don't get me wrong) write pretty deep lyrics, too. On top of that, I just love the musical side of the genre - whereas I might find many of those old guys that one is NOT supposed to talk down to be... while not necessarily "bad", I'll go with somewhat boring.

I'd also like to add Justin Bieber - I know it's not exactly a new idea, but hear me out: I'm actually not going to say he's a bad artist - I mean, you have to admit he's done a damn good job at building himself a career this early. I just don't get why there is SO much hype about him, but there are certainly worse acts out there ATM.

If I have to shoot down a couple of acts, I'd like to mention Taylor Swift (I'm sure she's the nicest person in the world, but GOD I found that first hit embarrassingly bad) and Black Eyed Peas (I still absolutely love some of their original stuff, but the last many hits haven't been my cup of tea at all).

Also, I'm not big on the whole techno scene.

I know its been said and repeated but I have to say it : JUSTIN BIEBER D:<
That little twerp, is by far the most over-rated singer I have ever seen or heard of in my life.

I dunno if it's just me or if this band is actaully over-rated, but I can't stand the Beatles. I've listened to most of their songs and I couldn't find a single one that sounded good to me, which is weird cause to be honest I like a variety of music. EG : Pop, rock, heavy metal, screamo, orchestral, Classical, rap, hip hop, folk music, etc. (you get the point, basically I like any type of music as long as the song itself is good)

Then again, alot of music these days is over-rated, and it seems like people are just copying eachother......

Sorry to go off topic, but on that note let me just say one thing. I don't hate Lady Gaga, I think her songs are fine and about the only thing I actaully admire, is her originality (although its hard to know if thats for herself or for the cameras :S)

Anyway, I always dress in a really "escentric" manner, and people on the streets always looked at me as if I was crazy. However now that "Lady Gaga" is doing it, that means it's ok. Apparently now people can put coke cans in their hair and it's ok. I swear, If I had done that before Lady Gaga people would laugh at me and say I have no sense of fashion....But Lady Gaga is doing it, so now apparently everyone enjoys dressing escentically even though before Gaga, they wouldn't have been could dead in outfits like that....God I hate those kind of two-faced posers.

Thats one bad thing that comes with over-rated celebrities. All of a sudden, everything they say, do or wear is amazing and popular and fans do anything they can to follow their favourite celebrities like drooling dogs. It's really pathetic

Anyone that has their songs on a radio station is considered to be overrated by someone... More notable = more overrated

Eh I could whip out a list but doing so would be pointless because my opinion is just as valid as the opinion of others.

Oh and for the record, I love Rap music :) *refer to custom title.

Well, today's popular music scene is just plain terrible. That's pretty much a well-known fact these days. However, every so often someone states to me that, "Aw no bro, so and so is still putting out really good stuff! He always has!"

Well, i disagree with that. Not only do I not like what said artist is putting out now, but i don't like stuff he did in his/her "prime." So now I ask who you believe to be an overrated musician; now or from the past.

Except for The Beatles. They are the greatest band of all time. Period.
Aw, I was hoping for some serious, thoughtful conversation!

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. You hate whomever we're about to tell you we like? Is this a troll thread, or are you claiming omniscience? Or are you stating that every artist currently active (The Roots, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Mars Volta, The Black Keys, Janelle Monae, Cee-Lo) all suck and always have sucked? Robert Plant still sings occasionally - does he suck as well?

I think you've just excused yourself from the serious adult conversation table, even before you made the most cliched, easy statement ever parroted ad nauseum on the topic of music.

By the way, the Beatles broke up before you were born, and half of them are dead.

Speaking as a musician, I feel like ever since the concept of marketing was invented, "popular" music has always been awful and the worst bands usually prevail in their time and then are forgotten in favor of other, much better musicians from the time. I honestly don't think that it's even ABOUT the music nowadays, the general public pretty much bases their like or dislike of an "artist" on how they're marketed and how they present themselves, their looks/personality/actions/perhaps their "cause" if they take up charity or advocate for something, rather than the actual content of their music. Literally everything upwards of 95 percent of modern pop "artists" has been done before, and the Grammys are famously a bigger joke than any other big awards show, the Oscars don't hold a candle to the type of bullshit the Grammys have pulled. Short answer, if a person has made millions off their music, they probably didn't really make it off the music. Lady Gaga is not rich as fuck because her music is good, she is rich because she's marketed extremely well to a very large demographic, namely fucktards and people who like to dance. Girls don't go nuts for Bieber because his music is good, they love him because he's attractive (to them). Look at how quickly the public turns against an artist when they take a big enough PR misstep. In the circles I come from, where people are primarily concerned with the music that's being made, no one gives two shits about anything about someone except how they play. It's almost impossible to be a big enough asshole that people stop liking your music if you're playing well enough. You could look like the mutant from 300 and greet people with the phrase "I fucked your dad" and while people would say "man, what an asshole," if you played beautiful music, they'd listen. Not the case with pop.

How the hell did you fix a coke-can to the top of your head?
LOL I didn't :)....I'm saying IF I did, (before gaga) I would have been called crazy....I saw a lady on the street a week ago wearing coke cans in her hair like Lady Gaga, and nobody gave her a second glance! Yet I always got stares and not even I dressed that weird.
