Eh I could whip out a list but doing so would be pointless because my opinion is just as valid as the opinion of others.

Oh and for the record, I love Rap music :) *refer to custom title.

But...but...the Gorillaz >.>
Yes the Gorillaz are one of my favorite bands of all time but I've never heard the Gorillaz on the radio... besides they're more of an experimental progressive alternative thing... not so much indie...<.<

Oh by the way I found this old obscure Japanese song from 1985... It reminds me a lot of the Gorillaz self titled album it's somewhere between Tomorrow Comes Today, Dracula and Bill Murray... with it's lazy almost rap style drum beats, heavy reliance on a simple bass line and borderline ambient guitar melody...

Phillip Glass, I fucking hate minimalists. They write songs that literally consist of just one meter repeated. They don't even try to disguise their repetitiveness by putting lyrics on top like most modern pop music.

Fuck, even baroque-era operas change their lines after four or five repetitions. Minimalists are almost as lazy as the most terrible modern artists who consider a blank canvas to be art. Sure, some minimalists try to get fancy with their phases and evolving scores, but they aren't fooling anyone.

I also don't get people who enjoy minimalist music. They're not the same sort of people who go to a concert to see a chamber orchestra (i.e. cheapskates and/or idiots.) They're the sort of people who are too damn lazy or dull-minded to appreciate music with even the slightest degree of complexity.

Edit: Thank fuck Igor Stravinsky came around about the same time and showed us how it's done:
No one digs textural variety anymore.
Here's to "classical" music starting riots!
Hells yeah, the premiere of the The Right of Spring started a riot in ten seconds flat. I'm pretty sure even Marilyn Manson has never been able to shock an audience that quickly. Now that's what I call fucking hardcore.
How about the Who? they started a riot with their sound check... people were trampled to death...<.<

I have half a mind to think you're trolling. There's a plethora of good artists from today. Music's quality and the time it was made in are about as relatable as a turkey sandwich and the Andromeda Galaxy.
Yeah, okay. Fair point. Let's make that nearly everything popular from the last decade. Or two decades, even.

I think that was more because of The Who's incredible popularity and not because The Who were particularly shocking. Igor Stravinsky provoked the aforementioned riot on what was practically his first performance. He did that by writing a ballet about rituals of rape and human sacrifice. My point that Igor Stravinsky remains to this day the most effective shock artist still stands.

Well, today's popular music scene is just plain terrible. That's pretty much a well-known fact these days. However, every so often someone states to me that, "Aw no bro, so and so is still putting out really good stuff! He always has!"

Well, i disagree with that. Not only do I not like what said artist is putting out now, but i don't like stuff he did in his/her "prime." So now I ask who you believe to be an overrated musician; now or from the past.

Except for The Beatles. They are the greatest band of all time. Period.
My quick response to such a question would be 'all of them.' With the very few exceptions of some bands, or maybe single musicians, I would say the entire industry has become a twisted monstrosity that should be burned from existence and started up again. After all, would they have given Rebecca Black a record deal if 'Friday' was written in the 80's? Or even in any decade before that? Also, your quote about good musicians includes the word'still'. That suggests that many of the musicians releasing good music today are just the legends of the previous decades who can still shine among the sea of crap that is music.

I am not saying this to make you mad, but I waould say The beatles are overrated. I went over to a friend that had the entire back catalogue and I wasn't hearing what other people were hearing. They are a good band, a lot better than some of the stuff that is pushed out these days, but I don't in a million years tink that they are "the greatest band of all time", for me that's Queen (IMHO).

As for todays artists, I would say Lady gaga. I don't see how wearing a dress made out of meat could be consdered "quirky" and "arty" as a friend of mine stated to me, to me, it's just unhygenic.

Hm, I guess three ponies in a row would have been a stretch, but in the mean time, if you're really trying to pick a fight the way you are, one (me) could argue that Nickleback has been re-writing the same thing so many times with such slight variations that every album will end up having one song that stands out from all the others, but that's not to say it's still any good.

I feel as though I'll regret this, better change my icon...something with Rainbowdash...
There was video done that layered two songs from them, one from a previous album and one from a new one, literally the same sang with only slightly different lyrics.

OT: bruno mars, his voice gets annoying i don't know what it is about it it just irritates the fuck out of me not to mention his lyrics are usually nonsense.

Yeah Lady Gaga is probably the most overrated of todays musicians, she's over pretentious, full of shit, lies like a rug to give her music some kind of artistic merit, pushes her shock value so far that it becomes hilariously stupid and blatantly panders to her gay audience...

also her videos are stupid and non nonsensical...

Also I agree with you about the Beatles, they're not the greatest rock band to ever live but I still think their music is quite good and I can understand and appreciate all they've done for not just pop and rock but music and general...

I'm just gonna go ahead and say that for every artist that is considered overrated, there is a whole lot of people that underrate said band. So I reckon a lot keeps nice and balanced.

And yes, I happen to like Lady Gaga en Nickelbacks Dark Horse album is awesome.

On this forum?
Not a single band is overrated. Everyone gets so much backlash, it's almost silly.

Oooooooooorrrrrrr... not. At this point I'm getting pretty sick of Beatles elitists. Do you actually like them for their music, or because it's "cool/edgy/retro/insert your own lame value judgement here" to like them?

Almost every "hardcore" Beatles fan I've ever met has bought right into the image of being a Beatles fan. No-one can tell me why they like the music. The production on the records is horrible and clinical, their lyrics (with a few exceptions) are original only by the standards of their time, the riffs are generally underwhelming...

And, in the end, that's why the Beatles just aren't that good any more: they're an anachronism. They haven't stood the test of time. Claiming that a band are the best at what they do (Rock and Roll) just because they invented it is borderline retarded. You don't make a prototype expecting it to be better than whatever you develop after it, do you?

So yeah, thanks for giving us a topic of discussion before qualifying a certain band as out of bounds.

I don't get it, how can music be overrated? Either you like the music or you don't. If an artist is overrated because "too many" like it, well that doesn't even begin to make sense. I mean, I'm not to tell anyone what's good or not, but to say music is overrated instead of saying you don't like it sound elitist to me. Instead of saying you don't like it, you claim that not only are they bad, but the fact that others listen to is bad.
Sure, media tends to escalate things with overexposure to what's popular, making it seem more popular just because it get's media attention, but that's the life cycle of pop, that's nothing new.
Lastly. OMG, I can't believe so many people seriously use the "Everything was better before" argument. Remember when jazz was the devils music. Geez, mankind is a sad species.

What people seem to forget is that old "pop" music sounded pretty much interchangeable as well. The problem is of course that only the best songs get played these days.

Most overrated of modern times? Nickelback do some good songs, even if they sound quite similar - you write what you know, and at least they can play their instruments decently, which is more than some modern artists.
