I don't know, Creed gives them a run for their money. If only we could make some sort of NickleCreed hybrid.

Haters gonna hate.
Yeah but Creed had the decency to pack it in, lose the singer and form a good band.

Personally I think artists that don't write their own material are a great deal lesser than those that do. I'm not going to bother adding any more to that.

Oh, I almost forgot, The XX. Boring, boring, boring, slow, dull, lifeless crap, yet worshipped by pretentious knobs. I must say, it makes a good backing for DMX though. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X9dl5_pwKQ]

Lady Gaga is overrated, but I'm oddly fascinated by her popularity.

See, everything about her has nothing to do with the music at all. If you listened to it without knowing who she was you'd say that it was good, but pretty vanilla in its execution. The thing that makes her stand out the most are her crazy music videos and overall image and attitude which has been carefully crafted to gain the highest amount of media exposure/attention possible which has given her popularity that has nothing to do with the music she puts out.

Everything she does put out is actually pretty vanilla in comparison with her image when you take time to step back from it and look at it objectively. If you took her image and her music as separate entities you'd likely think that someone with an image as over the top of hers would have a sound like The Prodigy, Angelspit or some other, harder, music; yet she puts out catchy pop tunes instead which, although quite nice (in a "I might sing along with it in the car if it came on" kind of way) have a complete contrast with the image she presents to the public.

Essentially, she's overrated because she's actually more of a clever marketing campaign and has a keen eye on how the industry works so she's crafted an image for herself in order to make the image and her music a more universal consumable product instead of artistic expression. She is actually a talented musician, and from the earlier stuff I've seen from her she could've gone in a completely different direction and plumbed for the niche audience, instead she chose to go for widespread appeal in order to market herself to the highest degree possible.

I would like to point out that I've got nothing against her, these are just observations I've made. It's perfectly fine if you like her stuff, after all, that's the whole point of pop music; it's popular and it's supposed to be that way. However there's a deeper discussion on how her approach reflects the standards of the music industry and its relationship with broader public tastes, but I suppose that's a discussion for another thread.

ITT: People who think music they don't personally enjoy is over rated. To me nothing in the music industry is overrated because people like what they like.

Nice trolling there...

To be honest Lady Gaga is in the very mainstream music scene and she makes amazing music. This is coming from a die hard metalhead. She also preaches a good message. It's sad that she's thrown in the same pile as Bieber.

Yeah, today's stuff is way over-rated, Lady Gaga is good but not that good. However, I believe Eminem and Tool are pretty special, the last of the big names that really meant something.

I'm sure there was no bad music "back in the day". Ever. It was all amazing.
At least there was amazing stuff back in the 60's, 70's, 80's & little in the 90's.

Any band with militant fans is overrated IMHO

No one artist of any sort is good enough to deserve that, Bieber, gaga, britney, zepplin, beatles all of them, plus millions more.

And bands arent underrated either, they just are. They are entertainment and nothing more, and nothing out there warrents the passion that bands have. The fights that break out over it, i mean seriously, do you really think that actually gives a shit if you knock some fool out because they said something bad about their band, it is kind of pathetic.

I have favourite bands, but i dont push them on people, and i dont think they deserve to be more famous than they are, same with the bands i cant stand, they are as famous as they are for a reason, that reason may be because teenaged girls will buy anything with a cute boy or an impowered girl, but that is the reality of life.

The Beatles are shit. Period.

Also, most modern pop/rock singers. Except Taylor Swift. She is awesome.
I really hope you're joking, but in case you're not...

1.the Beatles are the greatest band that ever walked on the face of the earth (and under the sea, mainly in octopus-gardens)
their main-stream famous tracks appeal to 99% off rockers and their more experimental tracks are so varied they appeal to a lot of people as well.
2.pretty much every successful pop "artist" can be considered over-rated since all of them are bad and amazingly successful.
3,profit (weak,i know -_-")

I listen to the alternative radio station here in Australia, so i have heard all of those songs.

And also, that Skrillex song, along with the bloody beetroots totally made me rethink my opinion of dance music recently, which i had already rethought and then un-rethought before...if that makes sense

As someone who likes her music and is just as intrigued by her popularity I agree. her music isnt particularly amazing but her image does a lot (although i think the music videos are awesome)

I think she's the kind of personality that the music industry needed. bringing back extravagance and someone who will talk about the controversial topics without fear of losing sales like most of the plain acts we were getting did.

In fact it's probably got something to do with the recession too now that I think about it.

I prefer Slight Seismic Rumblings with Undertones of Aquatic Doom.
Apparently they're really big in Japan at the moment.

My list consists of Kings of Leon written several hundred times.

They are trash.

There was also alot of crap.

I remember hearing once, that the year the Clash released London Calling, which is considered the greatest punk\alternative album of all time, the number one song of the year was "Sugar Sugar" by "The Archies", and yes, that is the same Archie from the comics. The Clash was beaten by an imaginary band.

I am sure there is amazing stuff being released now, and in 20 or 30 years there will be "Hits of the 90s" and "Hits of the 00's" being sold on late night infomercials, and we will be sitting back going, yeah, i remember when they released that mmm-bop song

As much as it seems like it it's not a new trend. It is just that after the years go by all the music that wasn't standing out get's left behind. Who knows how many songs there are from when you were younger that got completely washed away but in, lets say 30 years time, all of the songs that sound a like will be thrown away. Do you really think that "Friday" is going to be played more than 6 months from now? And I doubt Ke -Dollar sign- Ha will be anything more than a faded memory 30 years from now. In the end no matter how much you remember your old music as all great and amazing you always forget that there was some REALLY shitty music back then too.

TISM. For a band that sell so many damn albums and considering all the kids can't shut up about them, they're such arty hoity toity frikkin wankers, no time for em at all.
Really, TISM...i thought only Australians would listen to them.

You are aware they are a joke band, like frenzal rhomb or in america, Presidents of usa

they arent meant to be taken seriously, although some people do adopt them as a point of rebellion, because they are so crass and stupid, they tend to piss off parents
