mmmm i cant think of an artist right now but i can think of a genre: Dubstep. Dubstep has got to be the most overrated genre of dance music i have happened to unfortunately be alive while it came into the spot light. It's alright dont get me wrong but its not THAT great =/

Overrated? What a meaningless word when it comes to music, because nobody uses the same rating system as anybody else. Technical merit? Artistic vision? Lyrical composition? The question is way too vague to even begin to give an appropriate answer to, and just mentioning The Beatles means you're using a much different measuring stick than I am.

Absolutely everyone ever.

If you have ever picked up an instrument or sung a note then you are grossly overrated.

Also, I am so non-mainstream that the only music I listen to is recordings of rivers and thunderstorms.

So there.
i do too but so Im mainstream but do you listen to yours upside down on a phonograph taped to a rainbow zebra because if you did then i (capitalizing "i"'s is to mainstream) would have to kill my self because that'd be to mainstream but killing yourself is to mainstream but...

I don't listen to any current music. Not because I'm some hipster douchebag, but just because I like the sound of older and lesser known stuff more.

Overrated? Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and most hip-hop/rap artists.
Underrated? Chevelle. They have such an awesome sound and more people should listen to them.

I liked Disturbed up until after they released Another Way To Die. I listen to Asylum and I have problems finding where tracks switch from one to another.

Any/all rap artists, R&B artists, and Country artists/bands . The beatles. Michiel Jackson.

I'm so no making any friends with this.
but you are still right (except for maybe the country artists although im not a fan). the only person who can state you wrong is ther person still alive that can play the opening chord to hard days night on their own also, as much as i love them, system of a down may be amazing in studio but they go down a little bit on live shows. they make up for it by getting darren high and having him perform crazy stunts. slipknot i think is overrated, but only cuz i dislike them.

No, not Nuff said. You do realize that such vocal embellishments have been around since before your grandparents got it on, don't you? What song is "Baybe baby by ooh!?"
Oh, I'm sorry its Bieber. All young popstars are over rated, only not Michael Jackson.

I must say, a lot of these posts are reaffirming for me the idea that "overrated," and "underrated," are overrated terms.

Some of you seem to have missed this, so I'll point it out.

"Overrated" is an expression of something's value in the perception of the speaker relative to it's seeming value in the perception of society at large. So if you loved Rattle and Hum at the height of its popularity, you wouldn't call it overrated, in spite of its being wildly popular.

White men that try and imitate a style that is mainly explored by the afro-american culture. I'm talking about rap and R&B. Also rap and R&B in general.

Nothing like a thread dedicated to bashing music that people like.

We're not going to conform by conforming! HA! Take that society!

Rivers and Thunderstorms used to be good, but now everyone's heard of them...especially rivers. You could almost say that they became
mainstream
that was just pure genius

O.T. i dont like much music nowadays, all i listen to is Metallica and Children of Bodom

but if i had to say who an overrated singer is, it would have to be, erm, Lil Wayne maybe, he is just a dirkhead

You listen to recordings? Fucking poser.

I only listen to live monsoons and deltas.

I don't listen to rivers because they're too... mainsteam.

EDIT: SON OF A *****.

I'm a big fan of Lady Gaga myself, not sure why! I don't really like pop.

My favorite musician is a Singer Songwriter who apparently isn't very well known in the states but is in the UK; Katie Melua. the most beautiful voice i've ever heard.

Music will ALWAYS be better last generation, know why? Because the people who loved it back then are the only ones complaining.

But on topic; Katie Perry... she's just so BORING!
